POTASSIUM THIGLYCOLATE

EC / List no.: 252-038-4
CAS no.: 34452-51-2
Mol. formula: C2H4O2S.K

Potassium Thioglycolate is an organic compound used as primary active ingredient in Hair depilatories formulations.
In an aqueous solution at the proper pH it is converted to an acid which then affects the hair.
Potassium Thioglycolate breaks down the disulfide bonds in Keratin and weakens the hair so that it is easily scraped off where it emerges from the hair follicle.
The break down is affected by Calcium hydroxide or Potassium hydroxide.
They are present in excess to enable the Thioglycolic acid to react with the Cystine joining chains in hair protein.

Description
Potassium thioglycolate is an organic salt.
Potassium Thioglycolate is used as depilating agent, hair-waving/straightening agent and as reducing agent in cosmetics.

Use: Potassium Thioglycolate is  a high quality cosmetic grade with the lowest possible iron content and is used in depilatory formulations.

Potassium Thioglycolate, 42 Percent Aqueous Solution is a depilatory agent used in personal care depilatory gels or foams.
Potassium Thioglycolate is also used in hair waving and straightening products.
Ungraded products supplied by Spectrum are indicative of a grade suitable for general industrial use or research purposes and typically are not suitable for human consumption or therapeutic use.

The term depilatory means 'removing the hair'.
However, many chemical products that come in cream, lotion, powder, gel, roll-on or spray forms that get rid of hair are often called depilatories.
In fact, most people think of these specific type of products when they hear or see the word depilatory. They're great from removing unwanted hair from different parts of body.

Hair removal products work by breaking down the protein structure of the hair shaft.
These chemical depilatories come in gels, lotions and creams and can be effective.
There are many chemicals used for as active ingredient for hair removal.

Thioglycolate salts and sulfides are among the common active ingredients in hair removal products.
One of the most common and effective thioglycolate as Hair removal active ingredient is Kumar Organic's Kopcolate.
The chemical name of Kopcolate is Potassium thioglycolate.
Potassium Thioglycolate is an organic compound used primary active ingredient in Hair depilatories formulations.

The advantages of using Potassium thioglycolate are it is pain free unlike waxing, Quick and easy to use at home and relatively inexpensive.
Potassium Thioglycolate also makes skin stubble and soft.

Hence, we can conclude, use of active ingredient like Kopcolate in hair depilatories formulation is most effective mode of removal of unwanted hairs.

Cream, Spray, Foam, Gels and Aerosols
Depilatory active
Hair waving or straightening
Hair care products which are removed after application

Potassium thioglycolate is a salt of the organic (meaning it has carbon and oxygen) thioglycolic acid that has a thiol group and carboxylic acid in its chemical structure as well.
Thioglycolates have pungent odors due to their sulfur content, a feature that is frequently associated with Nair, although additional ingredients are incorporated in attempts to mask the smell.

Potassium thioglycolate is the "heavy-hitter" of Nair, playing the crucial role of breaking the disulfide bonds found in keratin, an action that calcium hydroxide then capitalizes on and uptakes hair from the root.
In order to break the bonds, the potassium thioglcolate reacts with cysteine.
The bonds are dibilitated to the point that hair can be wiped away with little difficulty.

While potassium thioglycolate is invaluable to Nair's composition, it is one of the ingredients that raises health concerns over irritation and increased sensitivity, but clinical health problems when potassium thioglycolate is a component of depilatories are not reported on a frequent basis.

Mercapto-Monopotassium Salt Acetic Acid, Mercaptoacetic Acid Monopotassium Salt, Potassium Mercaptoacetate

Product Category:conditioners (skin/hair),depilatory

Product Description:Potassium thioglycolate is one of the safe and highly effective hair removal agents.
By breaking the disulfide bond in the hair structure, it reduces the strength of the hair, makes the hair break and detach from the skin.
Potassium Thioglycolate has been widely used in hair removal cosmetics.
Mainly used as "hair removal spray";"Depilation mousse";"Depilating cream"

Cosmetic action
Hair is made of keratin, which is made of amino acids.
There are mainly disulfide bonds between the keratin chains.
The use of thioglycolic acid salts in preparations, e.g. for permanent waving, breaks the disulphide bonds, which permanently changes the hair arrangement.
In addition, thioglycolate is used as a hair removal aid in depilatory preparations.

APPEARANCE
Clear faintly pink liquid
FUNCTION
Is a depilatory used in cosmetics for hair weving or straightening.
SYNONYMS
