POTASSIUM THIOGLYCOLATE

CAS Number: 34452-51-2
Molecular Formula: C2H3KO2S
Molecular Mass (g/mol): 130.202
IUPAC Name: potassium;2-sulfanylacetate

Potassium Thioglycolate Description
Potassium thioglycolate is an aqueous solution at the proper pH which is converted to an acid.
Potassium Thioglycolate breaks down the disulfide bonds in Keratin and weakens the hair so that it is easily scraped off where it emerges from the hair follicle.
The break down is affected by potassium hydroxide.
Potassium Thioglycolates are present in excess to enable the Potassium thioglycolate to react with the Cystine joining chains in hair protein.

Potassium thioglycolate
That skunky stench is a signature attribute of this compound, a member of the perennially pungent thiol family.
A sulfur-hydrogen atom group gives thiols their sharp scent.
They eat into keratin (a skin and hair protein), which is what makes actual skunk spray (and Nair) lock onto human flesh and fuzz.
If the process stopped there, the result would be a home perm — weakened hairs can be easily shaped into curls.

Potassium Thioglycolate, 42 Percent Aqueous Solution is a depilatory agent used in personal care depilatory gels or foams.
Potassium Thioglycolate is also used in hair waving and straightening products.
Ungraded products supplied by Spectrum are indicative of a grade suitable for general industrial use or research purposes and typically are not suitable for human consumption or therapeutic use.

Potassium thioglycolate Usages
Potassium thioglycolate is widely used in hair removal (such as leather, human body), main agent for perm and dyeing, and preparation of solid liquid medium.
Potassium thioglycolate can be used in molybdenum beneficiation as a copper-sulfur inhibitor.
Potassium thioglycolate can also be used as a highly effective reducing agent.
