EINECS:    203-856-5

Description
Preventol GDA 50 is a well-known sensitizer among cleaners and health workers.
Preventol GDA 50 is also found in X-ray developers products.
Preventol GDA 50 is light yellow liquid.
Preventol GDA 50 is mixes with water.
Preventol GDA 50 is an organic compound with the formula (CH2)3(CHO)2.
The molecule consists of a five carbon chain doubly terminated with formyl (CHO) groups.
Preventol GDA 50 is usually used as a solution in water, and such solutions exists as a collection of hydrates, cyclic derivatives, and condensation products, several of which interconvert.
Because Preventol GDA 50 has two carbonyl group is reactive to primary amine groups (even as its hydrates), it can function as a crosslinking agent for any substance with primary amine groups and develop imine connected link.
Crosslinking rigidifies and deactivates many biological functions, so in this way, glutaraldehyde solutions are used as biocides and as fixative.
Preventol GDA 50 is sold under the brandname Cidex and Glutaral.
As a disinfectant, Preventol GDA 50 is used to sterilize surgical instruments.
In material science Preventol GDA 50 application areas range from polymers to metals and biomaterials.
Preventol GDA 50 is commonly used as fixing agent before characterization of biomaterials for microscopy.
Preventol GDA 50 is a powerful crosslinking agent for many polymers contain primer amine groups.
Preventol GDA 50 also can be used for an interlinking agent to improve the adhesion force between two polymeric coatings.
Preventol GDA 50 is also used to protect against corrosion of undersea pipes.
Preventol GDA 50 solution, 25% in water, is primarily for use as a protein cross-linking agent.
Preventol GDA 50 is not recommended for use as an electron microscopy fixative.
In the laboratory, Preventol GDA 50 solution is commonly used as an amine-reactive homobifunctional crosslinker and as a disinfectant for medical equipment.
Preventol GDA 50 may effectively crosslink amine and hydrazine derivatives to proteins and other amine-containing polymers; biotin hydrazides have been directly coupled to nucleic acids with Preventol GDA 50 in a reaction that is potentially useful for conjugating fluorescent hydrazides and hydroxylamines to DNA.

Biochemistry
Preventol GDA 50 is used in biochemistry applications as an amine-reactive homobifunctional crosslinker and fixative.
Preventol GDA 50 kills cells quickly by crosslinking their proteins.
Preventol GDA 50 is usually employed alone or mixed with formaldehyde as the first of two fixative processes to stabilize specimens such as bacteria, plant material, and human cells.
A second fixative procedure uses osmium tetroxide to crosslink and stabilize cell and organelle membrane lipids.

Another application for treatment of proteins with Preventol GDA 50 is the inactivation of bacterial toxins to generate toxoid vaccines, e.g., the pertussis (whooping cough) toxoid component in the Boostrix Tdap vaccine produced by GlaxoSmithKline.
Preventol GDA 50 is an effective protein crosslinker and finds application in techniques like enzyme immobilisation microscopy, histochemistry and cytochemistry.
Preventol GDA 50 exists in different forms under acidic or neutral conditions.
Preventol GDA 50 is a biocide widely used as a disinfectant in hospitals and industries and is toxic to aquatic organisms.
Preventol GDA 50's allergic nature leads to hypersensitivity reactions.
Contact of glutaraldehyde vapors in endoscopy contributes to Colitis.

Preventol GDA 50 should be noted that alkaline solutions containing glutaraldehyde may react with alcohol, ketones, amines, hydrazines, and proteins.

Uses
Preventol GDA 50 is used as a disinfectant and medication.
Usually applied as a solution, Preventol GDA 50 is used to sterilize surgical instruments and other areas.
As a medication Preventol GDA 50 is used to treat plantar warts.
For Preventol GDA 50, a 10% w/v solution is used.
Preventol GDA 50 dries the skin, facilitating physical removal of the wart.
Preventol GDA 50 is also used in the treatment of hyperhidrosis under the control of dermatologists.
Preventol GDA 50 solution is an effective agent to treat palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis as an alternative to tannic acid and formaldehyde.

As broad-spectrum antimicrobial cold sterilant/disinfectant for hospital equipment; as tanning agent for leather; as tissue fixative; as cross-linking agent for proteins; as preservative in cosmetics; as therapeutic agent for warts, hyperhidrosis, and dermal mycotic infections; in X ray processing solutions and film emulsion; as a disinfectant in the beauty industry
Preventol GDA 50 is commonly used in the medical industry in cold sterilization and in the X-ray development process.
Preventol GDA 50 can also be encountered in the leather industry as a tanning ingredient and in mortuary workers.
There are no reports which indicate that Preventol GDA 50 is a naturally occurring compound.
Cidex and Acusol, 2% buffered solutions, use Preventol GDA 50 as an active ingredient.
Sodium bicarbonate is required to activate the solution, which then has a shelf life of 1–2 weeks.
Despite health hazards involved with Preventol GDA 50's use, glutaraldehyde is one of the most effective biocides used.
Preventol GDA 50 is particularly effective against bacteria and viruses, including the human immunodeficiency virus.
Preventol GDA 50 is used to disinfect medical and dental equipment.
Preventol GDA 50 is also used for industrial water treatment and as a preservative.
Preventol GDA 50 is used as a cold sterilizingdisinfectant, as fixatives for tissues, in tanning, and in cross-linking proteins.
Preventol GDA 50 is used as a cross linking agent for gelatin, poly(vinyl alcohol) and polyheptapeptides.
Preventol GDA 50 is also used as a fixative for electron microscopy and as disinfectants.
Preventol GDA 50 provides water resistance to protein and polyhydroxy compounds by reacting through cross linking.
Preventol GDA 50 acts as an intermediate for the production of resins, dyestuffs, pharmaceuticals, photographic films and for stabilization of proteins on agarose beads, activation of polystyrene and glass for immobilization of antibodies and antigens and coupling peptides onto carrier proteins.
