PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES:

- Active principle: Alkyl Dimethylbenzylammonium Chloride (Preventol RI 50)
- Assay: 50%
- Appearance: colourless to straw-yellow liquid
- Density: 0.99 kg/l at 20°C
- pH: 7 - 7,5

SOLUBILITY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:

Depending on purity, Preventol RI 50 ranges from colourless to a pale yellow (impure).
Preventol RI 50 is readily soluble in ethanol and acetone.
Dissolution in water is ready, upon agitation.
Aqueous solutions should be neutral to slightly alkaline. Solutions foam when shaken.

Concentrated solutions have a bitter taste and a faint almond-like odour.
Standard concentrates are manufactured as 50% and 80% w/w solutions, and sold under trade names such as BC50, BC80, BAC50, BAC80, etc.
The 50% solution is purely aqueous, while more concentrated solutions require incorporation of rheology modifiers (alcohols, polyethylene glycols, etc.) to prevent increases in viscosity or gel formation under low temperature conditions.
Preventol RI 50 also possesses surfactant properties, dissolving the lipid phase of the tear film and increasing drug penetration, making it a useful excipient, but at the risk of causing damage to the surface of the eye.

-Laundry detergents and treatments.
-Softeners for textiles.

BIOACTIVE AGENT:

Especially for its antimicrobial activity, Preventol RI 50 is an active ingredient in many consumer products:

-Pharmaceutical products such as eye, ear and nasal drops or sprays, as a preservative.
-Personal care products such as hand sanitizers, wet wipes, shampoos, soaps, deodorants and cosmetics.
-Skin antiseptics and wound wash sprays, such as Bactine.
-Throat lozenges and mouthwashes, as a biocide
-Spermicidal creams.
-Cleaners for floor and hard surfaces as a disinfectant, such as Lysol and Dettol antibacterial spray and wipes.
-Algaecides for clearing of algae, moss, lichens from paths, roof tiles, swimming pools, masonry, etc.

Preventol RI 50 is also used in many non-consumer processes and products, including as an active ingredient in surgical disinfection.
A comprehensive list of uses includes industrial applications.
An advantage of Preventol RI 50, not shared by ethanol-based antiseptics or hydrogen peroxide antiseptic, is that it does not cause a burning sensation when applied to broken skin.

USES:

-Medicine:

Preventol RI 50 is a frequently used preservative in eye drops; typical concentrations range from 0.004% to 0.01%.
Stronger concentrations can be caustic and cause irreversible damage to the corneal endothelium.
Avoiding the use of Preventol RI 50 solutions while contact lenses are in place is discussed in the literature.

Due to its antimicrobial activity when applied to skin, some topical medications for acne vulgaris have Preventol RI 50 added to increase the products’ efficiency or shelf-life.
Preventol RI 50 is scientifically proven to be a successful spermicide.
Tablets are inserted vaginally, or a gel is applied, resulting in local spermicidal contraception.
Preventol RI 50 is not a wholly reliable method, and can cause irritation.

-Beekeeping:

It is used in beekeeping for the treatment of rotten diseases of the brood.

DEGRADATION:

Preventol RI 50 degradation follows consecutive debenzylation, dealkylation, and demethylation steps producing benzyl chloride, an alkyl dimethyl amine, dimethylamine, a long chain alkane, and ammonia.
The intermediates, major, and minor products can then be broken down into CO2, H2O, NH3, and Cl–.
The first step to the biodegradation of BAC is the fission or splitting of the alkyl chain from the quaternary nitrogen as shown in the diagram.
This is done by abstracting the hydrogen from the alkyl chain by using a hydroxyl radical leading to a carbon centered radical.

This results in dimethylbenzylamine as the first intermediate and dodecanal as the major product.
From here, dimethylbenzylamine can be oxidized to benzoic acid using the Fenton process.
The trimethyl amine group in dimethylbenzylamine can be cleaved to form a benzyl that can be further oxidized to benzoic acid.

Preventol RI 50 uses hydroxylation (adding a hydroxyl group) to form p-hydroxybenzoic acid.
Preventol RI 50 can then be converted into ammonia by performing demethylation twice, which removes both methyl groups, followed by debenzylation, removing the benzyl group using hydrogenation.
The diagram represents suggested pathways of the biodegradation of Preventol RI 50 for both the hydrophobic and the hydrophilic regions of the surfactant.
Since stearalkonium chloride is a type of Preventol® RI 80, the biodegradation process should happen in the same manner.

APPLICATION:

Preventol RI 50 available as a textile dyeing and finishing industry of fungicides and softeners, antistatic agents, emulsifiers, conditioner, etc.
For the formulation of disinfectants or disinfecting cleaning agents for the medical, veterinary and cosmetic sectors, the food processing industry, agriculture and households. For water treatment (algae prevention in cooling water and swimming pools) and for the elimination of fungi, algae and lichens (substrate pre-treatment agent).
Preventol RI 50 and RI 50 have a broad spectrum of activity covering mould fungi, algae and lichens along with slime forming organisms, bacteria and yeasts.
They are ideal active ingredients for disinfectants for use in households and in the food processing industry.
Preventol RI 50 and RI 50 are odourless and are miscible in any ratio with water and lower alcohols.

Diluted solutions of Preventol RI 50 is therefore ideal for eliminating fungi, algae and lichens from finished coatings, plaster and stone and concrete surfaces.
Preventol RI 50 greatly reduces the surface tension of water, good wetting and penetration are guaranteed when using substrate pre-treatment agents based on these products.
A mould-infested substrate must also be pre-treated with a penetrating fungicidal agent even when the coating applied afterwards is itself fungicidal.
To ensure that this coating-bonds effectively (no flaking), it is advisable to wash with water after a solution containing.
Preventol RI 50 has been applied or not to apply a coat to the treated surfaces until they have dried (after approx. 24 hours) pre-tests are recommended.
