USES and APPLICATIONS of PURE TUNG OIL:
"Pure Tung Oil finish" is often used by paint and varnish manufacturers as a generic name for any wood-finishing product that contains the real Pure Tung Oil or provides a finish that resembles the finish obtained with Pure Tung Oil.
Pure Tung Oil is a common traditional wood finish, used typically for two main properties: first, it is a naturally derived substance.

Second, after Pure Tung Oil cures (5 to 30 days, depending on weather/temperature), the result is a very hard and easily repaired finish, so it is used on boat decks and now on floors.
Pure Tung Oil is often diluted with hydrocarbon thinner so its viscosity is very low and enables the oil to penetrate the finest grain woods.

This thinning vehicle evaporates in 15 to 20 minutes.
When applied in many fine/thinner coats over wood, Pure Tung Oil slowly cures to a matte/light satin look with slight golden tint.
Pure Tung Oil resists water better than any other pure oil finish and does not darken noticeably with age.

Pure Tung Oil is claimed to be less susceptible to mould than linseed oil.

Limonene and D-limonene are less toxic alternatives for mineral spirits.
Pure Tung Oil-paper umbrella is the traditional umbrella used in China, Japan, and other countries in the East Asian cultural sphere, and was brought to Western countries through the Silk Road.

Pure Tung Oil is the "oil" mentioned in the oil-paper umbrella, which is used to protect the paper from getting wet, and to make the umbrella waterproof.
The traditional technique for applying pure tung oil is to dilute the oil 1:1 with solvent, then apply a succession of very thin films with a soft, lint-free cloth such as tee-shirt cotton.

Diluents range from traditional spirits of turpentine to any of the new citrus-based thinners to naphtha.
The choice of thinner should be guided by how fast the coating needs to set.
Naphtha works well in spray-on applications in well-ventilated studios.

Primary coats may be laid down at a 1:1 oil-to-thinner ratio, and successive layers, if not absorbed into the wood, at higher solvent to oil concentrations.
This technique brings out the deepest color of the wood while maintaining a matte finish.

Pure Tung Oil finishes that start with polymerized oils or Pure Tung Oil preparations are best applied in the fat over lean principle: thinned pure oil is applied to deeply penetrate the surface, to fill pores.
Straight oil is then applied moderately to adhere to the surface and provide a good base for the thick gloss layers.

The polymerized oil is then applied thickly as a single layer, allowed to fully dry, buffed smooth with very fine sandpaper and 0000 steel wool.
The surface is wiped clean with a moistened rag and allowed to dry.
A final coat is applied fairly thickly (Pure Tung Oil will smooth itself into a glass-like coating) and allowed to dry for two to three days.

Rags soaked with Pure Tung Oil can spontaneously combust (burst into flame).

-Pure Tung Oil as a Woodworking Finish:
Pure Tung Oil, also known as China Wood Oil, Lumbang oil, Noix d’abrasin (fr.) or simply wood oil, is made from the seed kernels of the Tung tree (Aleurites fordii and Aleurites montana, family Euphorbiaceae).

The A. fordii tree grows well in cooler climates, but can survive up to sub-tropical climates.
A. montana is restricted to a more tropical climate.

-Easy Application of Pure Tung Oil:

-Thinning Agent Compatibility:

-Application of Pure Tung Oil:
The objective is to saturate the surface with Pure Tung Oil.
There are 3 key steps to achieve a good finish.

Apply – Apply a liberal amount of Pure tung oil to the surface using a rag, brush, pad, roller, or pump sprayer.
Absorb – Allow the coat to soak into the wood.

Wait up to 45 minutes.
If most of Pure Tung Oil (>80% of the surface) has absorbed into the wood within 45 minutes, repeat step 1 (Apply) and allow it to absorb again.

Remove – Once Pure Tung Oil remains (puddles) on most (>80%) of the surface for more than 45 minutes, remove all excess oil by wiping with clean, dry rags.
PROPERLY DISPOSE OF ANY OIL SOAKED RAGS AND TOOLS

Hang (or lay flat) oil-soaked rags and tools outdoors to dry (7-15 days).
DO NOT pile or discard in a bag or other container while wet.

Allow the surface to “settle” overnight and repeat the above steps for 1-2 more coats to ensure the highest level of protection.
Most surfaces will require 2-3 applications; however, very porous, old, or dried up surface may require 6 or more coats.

WHEN TO CONSIDER PURE TUNG OIL:

HISTORY of PURE TUNG OIL:
The word "tung" is etymologically derived from the Chinese 桐 tóng.
The Pure Tung Oil tree originates in southern China and was cultivated there for Pure Tung Oil, but the date of cultivation remains unknown.
The earliest references for Chinese use of Pure Tung Oil are in the writings of Confucius (551–479 BCE) around 500 to 479 BC.
During the Song dynasty (960–1279), Pure Tung Oil was used for waterproofing on ships.

The primary constituent is a fatty acid with a chain of 18 linked carbon atoms or methylene units containing three conjugated double bonds.
They are especially sensitive to autoxidation, which encourages cross linking of neighbouring chains, hence hardening of the base resin.

HOW TO USE PURE TUNG OIL:
As well demonstrating how easy it is to use our Pure Tung Oil, you will also see the effects of the oil on 3 different pieces of wood: beech, oak and walnut - light to dark coloured woods.
You can see how the Pure Tung Oil darkens them to a different degree but enhances the grain of the woods.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS of PURE TUNG OIL:
Pure Tung Oil can take 30 days or more to fully cure.

Colored or pigmented stains (e.g.: water, gel, oil, or alcohol based) should NOT be used on food contact surfaces treated with Pure Tung oil.

Pure Tung Oil is usually thinned with oil-based solvents to make it easier to apply and help penetration.
This will significantly increase the VOC content of the finish.
The solvent will evaporate and the final finish will still be food safe and non-toxic.

WHAT IS PURE TUNG OIL AND WHY DO WE USE PURE TUNG OIL:
Lets jump straight in, what is Pure Tung Oil?
Pure Tung Oil is a hard wearing, naturally derived oil, extracted from the seed of the tung tree, and so is completely free from additives making it non-toxic and safe to use in all environments and on a variety of items.

As well as being highly resistant to water, Pure Tung Oil helps to prevent drying and deterioration of wood.
Pure Tung Oil is ideal for sealing bare and unfinished wood, helping to prevent it from marking and staining with use.

It's these traits which make Pure Tung Oil a great choice for food surfaces such as kitchen worktops, as well as kitchen utensils, children’s furniture and toys, and even outdoor wood such as decking.

Although Pure Tung Oil is easy to apply with a foam brush or lint free cloth, as it a natural oil that contains no thinners or drying agents, it has a longer drying time (of 24 hours) than some other oils.

This is important to consider when oiling outdoor wood, such as decking.
Pure Tung Oil dries to a natural, matt finish and can be used on all types of wood, both hardwood and softwoods to enhance the natural beauty of the grain.

WHERE TO USE PURE TUNG OIL:
Pure Tung Oil is an excellent all-natural, food-safe and waterproof finish for wood or other porous substrates (e.g.: concrete, some tile, brick, stone, etc.) both interior and exterior.

Pure Tung Oil will penetrate deep into the surface, yield a warm, matte, unfinished look and will enhance the natural beauty of the wood.
When used on other substrates, Pure Tung Oil tends to yield a wet, although not glossy, look with a slight amber hue.

Pure Tung oil should only be used by itself in multiple coats/applications.
Pure Tung Oil is not recommended for use with stains or over or under other finishes.

*Coverage/Thinning
All coverages are for one application.
Multiple coats are needed and will vary depending on how absorbent the surface.

1 gallon (128 oz.) covers approximately 400 square feet per coat
1 quart (32 oz.) covers approximately 100 square feet per coat

1 pint (16 oz.) covers approximately 50 square feet per coat
1 half pint (8 oz.) covers approximately 25 square feet per coat

Thinning will increase the spread rate but may require more applications to reach saturation.
In general, a 1:1 ratio will double the spread rate, 2:1 will triple the spread rate, etc.
For calculations, assume 3-4 applications with the un-thinned numbers.

*Thinning
Pure Tung Oil is 100% solids and can be used as such; however, it tends to work best (easier to apply and better penetration) when thinned with solvent.

Use only oil-based solvents (e.g.: paint thinner, mineral spirits, citrus solvent, odorless mineral spirits, turpentine, or VM&P naphtha)1 and avoid any VOC compliant or ‘green’ solvents as these will not mix well with Pure Tung Oil.

Depending on the surface being finished, adjust thinning as follows:
For most projects, a 1:1 ratio is ideal for use throughout the project.

For extremely dry, soft or old wood, full strength for at least for the first application, is ideal to reach saturation faster.
For dense or oily woods (e.g.: Ipe, teak, cumaru, rosewoods, etc.), a 2:1 ratio of solvent to tung oil is ideal.
