HOW PUREACT LSR IS MADE:
Pureact LSR is made with coconut acid and sarcosine, which is a breakdown product of creatine or caffeine.
Creatine is a natural amino acid found in muscle and body tissue.
Commercially, Pureact LSR is made in the presence of sodium hydroxide; it is then purified by recrystallizing it from alcohol or by acidifying it with mineral acid, separating the free acid, and neutralizing the free acid.
Pureact LSR, often known as Sarcosyl, is one of the most widely used amino acid-derived surfactants.
Amino acid surfactants are a group of surfactants derived from amino acids and fatty acids.

IN CULTURE, PUREACT LSR:
Pureact LSR was sold as a special ingredient called "Gardol" in Colgate "Dental Cream", as toothpaste was then called, during the 1950s through the mid-1960s in the US and the mid-1970s in France.

SYNTHESIS of PUREACT LSR:
***Synthesis of lauryl chloride:
In a dry three-necked flask equipped with a reflux condenser, add a certain amount of lauric acid, heating and melting, the temperature is controlled at 60~70°C, slowly add phosphorus trichloride drop by drop with sufficient stirring, the reaction is 2h, the reaction is static and stratified, the lower layer of phosphite is removed, and the upper layer of lauryl chloride can be obtained.
***Synthesis of N-lauroyl sarcosine:
Add a certain amount of sodium sarcosine solution and solvent tetrahydrofuran to a four-necked flask with an electric stirrer and reflux condenser, and add aqueous sodium hydroxide and lauryl chloride dropwise with stirring.
The pH value of the reaction system was controlled in the range of 9~11.
The pH value of the reaction system was adjusted to 1~2 with dilute acid to convert sodium sarcosinate to insoluble sodium sarcosinate with dilute acid.
The solvent was recovered by continuing to react for 3 hours.
After the reaction was continued for 3 h, the pH was adjusted to 1~2 with dilute acid so that N-lauroyl sarcosine was converted to N-lauroyl sarcosine, which was insoluble in water, and thus separated from water-soluble inorganic impurities.
Extract Pureact LSR with ether, wash the upper oil layer to neutral, dry with anhydrous sodium sulfate, evaporate the solvent and recrystallize with petroleum ether to obtain white needle crystals.
