RHEOLOGICAL ADDITIVES

Additives that change the rheological properties of paintwork materials are also called thickeners. Thickeners for water-dispersion paints and varnishes are divided, depending on the mechanism of action, into water-phase thickeners and composite thickeners.

Cellulose derivatives (cellulose ethers): The thickening action is based on the formation of hydrogen bonds and the hydration of cellulose molecules.

RHEOLOGICAL ADDITIVES FOR WATER-BASED PAINTS AND VARNISHES
Additives that change the rheological properties of paintwork materials are also called thickeners. Thickeners for water-dispersion paints and varnishes are divided, depending on the mechanism of action, into water-phase thickeners and composite thickeners.

Cellulose derivatives (cellulose ethers): The thickening action is based on the formation of hydrogen bonds and the hydration of cellulose molecules.
Acrylic thickeners: They interact with the components of paints and varnishes, forming associates. This reduces the mobility of the molecules, which leads to an increase in viscosity.
Polyurethane thickeners: React with polymer dispersion to form micelles. The formation of a network structure leads to a decrease in the mobility of the composition and an increase in viscosity. The correct combination of hydrophobic and hydrophilic segments is essential for the action of the associative thickener.
The nature of the flow of substances that are raw materials for the production of varnishes and paints, semi-finished products, as well as final products, is important for the technology of production of paints and varnishes. This factor determines: pump characteristics, mixing parameters, wetting, product stability during storage (sediment formation), application parameters, spreadability and gloss of coatings, tendency to drip.

Various characteristics affect the viscosity of liquids:

physical and chemical properties (interaction forces, dipole moments, hydrogen bonds, polymer morphology, polymer solution concentration)
pressure (increasing pressure leads to an increase in viscosity)
speed gradient
temperature (as the temperature rises, the viscosity decreases)
shift time and relaxation time, such as the phenomenon of thixotropy and rheopexy.

ACRYLIC THICKENERS FOR PAINTS AND VARNISHES
ATAMAN acrylic thickeners for water-based paints and varnishes. Synthetic rheology modifiers are designed for aqueous systems including anionic associative (HASE) and non-associative
thickeners (ASE). Each product class has its own properties and applications.

Alkaline swellable emulsions (ASEs) are dispersions of acid-functional acrylic polymers in water. They come with a low pH and acid groups on the polymer chains need to be neutralized
for the polymer to swell and thicken.

Associative thickeners HASE (hydrophobically modified alkaline swellable emulsion) are also commonly found in latex paints. HASE thickeners differ from ASE products in that they also
contain long chain hydrophobic groups in addition to acidic groups distributed throughout the polymer chain.

Key features and benefits:

High performance for many types of resins
Improved resistance to abrasion and abrasion
Excellent alignment
Reduced spatter

CELLULOSE ETHERS FOR PAINTS AND VARNISHES
Cellulose Ether polymers are used in the paint and varnish industry as thickeners for water-based paints. A decrease in the degree of polymerization results in a loss of ink viscosity
(paint thinning). Cellulose ethers not only thicken the paint, but also provide the paint with excellent mechanical properties and storage stability. For low viscosity water based
paints, hydroxyethyl cellulose is a very important class of additives. ATAMAN offers cellulose ethers for aqueous paintwork materials for delivery.
