SILOXANE D5

Siloxane D5 is a cyclic siloxane, that has a silicon-oxygen bond in a cyclic arrangement and methyl groups attached with the silicon atom.
Siloxane D5 is used in the production of some silicon-based polymers that are widely used in various personal care products.
Pharmaceutical secondary standards for application in quality control, provide pharma laboratories and manufacturers with a convenient and cost-effective alternative to the preparation of in-house working standards.

Siloxane D5, also known as D5 and D5, is an organosilicon compound with the formula [(CH3)2SiO]5.
Siloxane D5 is a colorless and odorless liquid that is slightly volatile.
Siloxane D5 is used in various cosmetic products. It also is used as a dry cleaning solvent and has been marketed as an "eco-friendly" and "green" alternative to perchloroethylene in the 2000s, under the tradename GreenEarth.
Siloxane D5 is persistent in nature and bioaccumulative. Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane is acutely non-toxic but its long-term health effects are unknown.
Siloxane D5 is a cyclic siloxane fluid that is clear, odorless, colorless, and non-oily.

Siloxane D5 is widely used in industrial applications and personal care products due to its hydrophobic nature, low water solubility, high volatility, transparency, high thermal stability, and lack of smell.
Siloxane D5 is one of three low molecular weight cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes (cVMS) commonly used in industrial applications and added to personal care products for its lubricating and sealing properties.
However, Siloxane D5 is also an emerging pollutant of interest due to its detection in the environment.
Siloxane D5 is used in personal care products including skin creams, cosmetics, shampoos, deodorants and conditioners.
Siloxane D5 is also used in various applications such as industrial cleaning fluids and dry cleaning solvents.

Uses
A cyclic volatile methylsiloxane (cVMS) used in cosmetic and personal care products.
Used in dermal exposure and inhalation toxicity study.
Siloxane D5 is incorporated into a formulation for its emollient and solvent activity.
Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane and Siloxane D5 are major industrial products, which are either marketed as such or used for the production of polydimethylsiloxanes.
Intermediate in the manufacture of high mol wt siloxane polymers.
Carrier ingredient in personal care products; dry cleaning solvent.

Siloxane D5 is classified as a cyclomethicone.
Such fluids are commonly used in cosmetics, such as deodorants, sunblocks, hair sprays and skin care products.
Siloxane D5 is becoming more common in hair conditioners, as it makes the hair easier to brush without breakage.
Siloxane D5 is also used as part of silicone-based personal lubricants.
Siloxane D5 is considered an emollient.
In Canada, among the volume used in consumer products approximately 70% were for antiperspirants and 20% for hair care products.
10,000–100,000 tonnes per year of Siloxane D5 is manufactured and/or imported in the European Economic Area.
Atmospheric emissions of Siloxane D5 in the Northern Hemisphere were estimated to 30,000 tonnes per year.

Siloxane D5 is also used as a dry-cleaning solvent.
Siloxane D5 was first marketed by GreenEarth Cleaning in the 1990s and was claimed to be eco-friendlier than tetrachloroethylene (the most common dry-cleaning solvent worldwide since the 1950s) despite being controlled in the EU for to its persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic characteristics.
Siloxane D5 is more bioaccumulative than tetrachloroethylene and it does not break down in nature.
Siloxane D5's use in dry cleaning will be prohibited in the European Union after June 2026 due to its environmental effect.
