2. KEY DIFFERENCES FROM COMMERCIAL MIXTURE (DOSSIER 2)
Aspect, Commercial Mixture (26264-58-4), Purified Isomer (130-14-3)
Composition, Isomeric mixture (1- & 2-methyl, various sulfonation positions), up to 30% Na₂SO₄, Predominantly the single 2-methyl-1-sulfonate isomer, higher purity (>95%)
Purity/Active, 75-85% active, 90-98% active (low inorganic salt)
Performance, Good general-purpose dispersant, More consistent and potentially superior performance in specific applications due to defined structure
Cost, Lower cost commodity chemical, Higher cost, specialty chemical
Applications, Broad industrial uses (concrete, agro), Research, pharmaceuticals, high-performance dispersants, analytical standards
3. SYNTHESIS & PURIFICATION
Starts with purified 2-methylnaphthalene feedstock.
Controlled sulfonation with concentrated H₂SO₄ at low temperature to maximize monosulfonation at the 1-position.
Selective crystallization or extraction processes to isolate the 1-sulfonic acid isomer from reaction byproducts.
Precise neutralization with NaOH and recrystallization from water/ethanol to obtain high-purity salt.
4. SPECIALIZED APPLICATIONS
Pharmaceutical Intermediate: Used in the synthesis of specific drugs (e.g., certain naphthalene-based compounds).
Analytical Chemistry: As a standard or reagent in chromatography and spectroscopy.
High-Performance Dispersants: Where consistent molecular structure is critical for reproducible performance in advanced materials (e.g., carbon nanotube dispersion, electronic ceramics).
Research: Studying structure-activity relationships of surfactants.
