SODIUM ALLYL SULFONATE

MAIN USES

Sodium Allyl Sulphonate is a clear, near colourless liquid manufactured from Allyl Chloride and Sodium Sulphite.

The product is available as either a 25% or 35% solution and is typically supplied in bulk tankers, 200 litre drums or 1000 litre IBC’s for use as an essential component in nickel electroplating formulations and in the manufacture of water treatment polymers.

This product is supplied in an aqueous solution containing, in addition to the sodium allyl sulphonate, approximately 8% sodium chloride.

Appearance: clear, near colourless liquid

pH (20°C, neat): 11.0 ± 1.5

Sodium Allyl Sulfonate 35% is used as a brightener for nickel electroplating, as a dyesite monomer in acrylic fiber, and as a performance monomer in synthetic polymer applications.

Sodium allyl and methallyl sulfonate are, along with other unsaturated sulfonates, important comonomers for the copolymerization with other unsaturated monomers, especially with acrylonitrile.

Sodium allyl sulfonate is produced in general by the reaction of allyl chloride with sodium sulfite in an aqueous and/or aqueous-alcoholic solution in accordance with the following reaction equation:

The reaction is preferably conducted in an aqueous-ethanolic solution in the boiling temperature range of 42°-44° C. under agitation and reflux.

However, such a process gives low yields due to considerable hydrolysis and solvolysis reactions. Therefore, the selectivity of the reaction is extremely unsatisfactory. Furthermore, such a process has low space-time yields. In accordance with U.S. Pat. No. 2,601,256, reaction times of 12 hours are required. Since the solubility of Na2 SO3 in water-alcohol mixtures is low, relatively dilute reaction solutions are furthermore obtained, the working-up of which requires high evaporation costs.

Function of Sodium Allylsulfonate

    I. Sodium Allyl Sulphonate is used as the third monomer of acrylic fiber to improve the dyeing performance of the fiber, which makes it absorb color fast, has strong fastness, bright color, and can improve the heat resistance and elasticity of the fiber.

    II. Used in water treatment chemicals, as a corrosion inhibitor and scale inhibitor monomer, and acrylic acid, acrylamide, maleic anhydride, sodium hypophosphite, vinyl acetate and other copolymerization, calcium phosphate, zinc salt, calcium carbonate and sulfuric acid Calcium and the like have a good scale inhibition effect.

    III. In the treatment of chemicals before electroplating, do nickel plating brightener.

    IV. For petrochemicals, and acrylamide, acrylic acid, sodium humate, acrylamidopropyltrimethylammonium chloride, acrylamidoethyldimethylammonium chloride, diethyldiallyl chloride Copolymerization of ammonium, allyltrimethylammonium chloride, etc., can be used as a dispersing agent, a fluid loss reducing agent, and has a remarkable effect against high temperature and salt.

    VI. Used as a coating additive, the production of thermosetting acrylic resin, and paint dispersant, increase water solubility.

    VII. A monomer for flocculating agent, copolymerized with acrylamide.

    VIII. Copolymerization with methacrylic acid and itaconic acid can be used as a dispersing agent.

    IX. For electronic and material processing, do single ion comb electrolyte membrane (CPPL), high water absorption resin.

    X. Used for soil improvement, and sodium acrylate, styrene-acrylic emulsion, polyvinyl alcohol and other polymerization to increase the fertility of red soil, strong adsorption of ammonium ions, nitrate ions.

    XI. Used in pharmaceutical intermediates.

    XII. As an antistatic agent, the internal antistatic effect is achieved by two methods, a conductive path is established, the electric charge is brought to the grounding wire, and the lubrication and demoulding action are performed after extrusion.
