Micellar catalysis with various polyoxyethylated compounds was used to synthesize sodium allyl sulfonate by the reaction of allyl chloride with an aqueous solution of sodium sulfite. It was shown that methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylates and water soluble polymers based on these compounds are surfactants and can be used to intensify the synthesis of sodium allyl sulfonate, which is of interest in the case of its subsequent application to obtain copolymers with methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylates.
The purpose of this work was to examine the influence of poly(sodium allyl sulfonate) (PSAS) branches on sizing properties of biological macromolecule (corn starch) for exploring a new anionic starch graft copolymer size (S-g-PSAS). Successful synthesis of S-g-PSAS samples was confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Viscosity stability, adhesion, film properties and desizability of the samples were also investigated. Compared with HS, improved adhesion to cotton and viscose fibers, viscosity stability and desizability for S-g-PSAS as well as enhanced breaking elongation and bending endurance for S-g-PSAS film were exhibited. With the rise in grafting ratio, bonding forces to both fibers, viscosity stability and desizability of S-g-PSAS and its film properties such as breaking elongation and bending endurance, were gradually enhanced. These results indicated that S-g-PSAS showed potential for the use as a new starch-based size in the sizing of cotton and viscose warps.
A new type of single‐ion conducting polymer electrolyte for lithium‐ion batteries, poly(hexafluorobutyl methacrylate‐co‐lithium allyl sulfonate) (P (HFMA‐co‐ASLi)), was firstly prepared by copolymerizing hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA) and sodium allyl sulfonate (SAS) with a subsequent lithiation process. The prepared polymer electrolyte exhibits high lithium ionic conductivity (10−4 S cm−1 at 80 °C) and excellent cycle performance at high temperature, which could be attributed to the good thermal stability (remains stable up to 300 °C), mechanical properties (7.1 MPa for breaking strength) and high lithium‐ion transference number (0.92). The electrolyte also displays good electrochemical stability (4.6 V). Our obtained results prove that the polymer P (HFMA‐co‐ASLi) is a promising candidate electrolyte for lithium‐ion batteries

The copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) with sodium allyl sulfonate (SAS) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at pH 7, aqueous DMSO solution (6% H2O), DMSO at pH 1.5, and aqueous solution at pH 7 has been investigated. Monomer reactivity ratios at 45°C. for AN and SAS are found to be r1 = 1.00 ± 0.01, r2 = 0.38 ± 0.02 in DMSO at pH 7; r1 = 1.25 ± 0.01, r2 = 0.28 ± 0.02 in aqueous DMSO; r1 = 1.85 ± 0.01, r2 = 0.43 ± 0.01 in DMSO at pH 1.5. From these values Price Q and e values, respectively, calculated for SAS were 0.19 and 0.22 in DMSO at pH 7, 0.14 and 0.18 in aqueous DMSO, and 0.18 and 0.70 in DMSO at pH 1.5. The large differences in reactivity of SAS may be attributed to the different electron distributions in SAS in each solvent which are caused by the poor solvating power of dimethyl sulfoxide and by the addition of protons. In copolymerization in aqueous solution, the physical condition depends upon the content of SAS in the monomer feed, and SAS is copolymerized to only a small extent in the range of heterogeneous systems, whereas SAS is copolymerized rather well in the range of homogeneous systems. Homopolymerization of SAS shows a first‐order dependence on initiator concentration and a three‐halves‐order dependence on monomer concentration; this is attributed to degradative chain transfer of SAS. Rates of copolymerization of AN and SAS decrease with increasing SAS content.

In the present study, hydro-soluble copolymers of acrylamide with sulfonic groups have been synthesized using thermally initiated free-radical precipitation polymerization in Ethanol. The considered monomer in this study is Sodium Allyl Sulfonate (SAS), which is the sodium salt of allyl sulfonic acid and belongs to the polyelectrolytes group. SAS is an ionic monomer, which can easily be dissociated in polar media to produce mobile ions. Mobile ions create an osmotic pressure difference between the polymer and the solvent phase resulting in the swelling enhancement. This behavior is known as polyelectrolyte effect. Acrylamide (AM) is another monomer used in this study. A new innovation of our study is the preparation and investigation of rheological properties of poly (AM-SAS) in the precipitation polymerization. 1-6 Hexandiol diacrylate (HDDA) and 2, 2′-azobis isobutyronitrile were considered as cross-linker and initiator, respectively. The effects of (HDDA) concentration and mol fraction of sodium allyl sulfonate comonomer (SAS) on the properties of microgels (i.e., spectral characteristics, glass transition temperature, equilibrium swelling, gel content and rheological properties) were also investigated. The rubber elasticity theory was applied to discuss the network structure of microgel. Apparent and rotational viscosities were used to determine the optimal cross-linker concentration and mole fraction of SAS. Despite of our prediction, SAS monomer not only enhance the rheological properties of microgels but also cause to reduce considerably gel content, swelling, viscosity and rheological properties of PAM microgels.

Allyl- is the prefix for the univalent organic group, -CH2=CHCH2. Allyl alcohol is an example, CH2=CHCH2OH, clear, pungent liquid, boiling at 96 C; soluble in water. It is prepared from allyl chloride by hydrolysis. Allyl compound, an alkene hydrocarbon, has a vinyl group, CH2=CH-, attached to a methylene -CH2. Because of the highly reactive double bond, allyl can undergo free radical addition to double bond which readily combine with themselves or other monomers to form homopolymers or co-polymers which are used in the production of coatings, adhesives and elastomers. In addition to free radical addition, allyl compounds can participate in a wide variety of reactions including electrophilic additions, allylic substitution and oxidation.  Allyl, an unsaturated bond, imparts a characteristic odor in some compounds. An example is allyl isothiocyanate which is the main ingredient of black mustards. (white mustard consists principally of p-hydroxybenzyl isothiocyanate). Allyl isothiocyanate is called mustard oil. Allyl esters are involved in fragrance, flavor, or odor. Sodium Allylsulfonate is a co-monomer of the polymers especially for functional acrylic fibers (dying betterment and heat resistance). It is used in chain transfer agent.

Human Toxicity Excerpts
An epidemiological survey of the effects of occupational exposure to allyl chloride was conducted. The study group consisted of 53 workers, (39 female) aged 18 to 51, working in two factories in the Peoples Republic of China that manufactured sodium allyl sulfonate. The subjects were given detailed questionnaires about their occupational and medical histories. Physical and neurological examinations were administered. Electroneuromyographic measurements were made. Ambient air concentrations of allyl chloride were measured. Allyl chloride concentrations ranged from 2.6 to 6,650 and 0.2 to 25.13 mg/cu m in the two factories. The factory with the lower allyl chloride concentrations was newer. The durations of exposure of the subjects in the older and newer factories were 2.5 months to 6 years and 1 to 4.5 years, respectively. More tan 92% of the subjects in the older factory reported weakness in the extremities. Other symptoms reported included paraesthesia and numbness in the extremities. Electroneuromyograph showed a neuropathy prevalence of 52.6%. In the newer factory, approximately 67% of the subjects reported weakness in the extremities. Other reported symptoms included numbness of hands and feet and dizziness. the number of subjects with abnormal neurological signs was smaller in the newer factory. Forty eight percent of the workers had electroneuromyograch findings indicating mild neuropathy. No significant abnormalities of other organs were noted. It was concluded that the main risk of industrial exposure to allyl chloride is damage to the peripheral nervous system. Polyneuropathy is thought to be the main clinical manifestation of chronic allyl chloride exposure.

(1) As the third monomer of acrylic, this product can improve the dyeing properties, the heat resistance and flexibility of fibers, so they can absorb color fast and have strong fastness and bright color.
(2) As a monomer of corrosion and scale inhibitors, this product can be used in water treatment chemicals. It can polymerize with acrylic acid, acrylamide, maleic anhydride, sodium hypophosphite and has good scale inhibition effects for calcium phosphate, zinc salts, carbonate calcium and calcium sulfate.
(3) As a tin-plated brightener in the plating pre-treatment agents.
(4) As a oil field chemical, it can polymerize with acrylamide, acrylic acid, sodium humate, acrylamido propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, acrylamido-ethyl-2-methyl ammonium chloride, diethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, allyl trimethyl ammonium chloride to be dispersants, fluid loss agent and have remarkable effect in anti-high temperature and salt.
