SODIUM CETYL SULFATE

EC / List no.: 214-292-4
CAS no.: 1120-01-0
Mol. formula: C16H34O4S.Na

Sodium Cetyl Sulfate, a long chain sodium alkyl sulfate, is a natural anionic surfactant.
Electrical conductivities of the aqueous solutions of SHS have been measured.
Mixtures of Sodium Cetyl Sulfate and hexadecanol (HD) have been employed for the emulsion polymerization of styrene.
The presence of impurities in Sodium Cetyl Sulfate can be evaluated by studying the impact of the chain length and pH of SHS on the electrokinetic properties of hematite.
Sodium Cetyl Sulfate intercalated in hydrocalumite (a layer double hydroxide) has potential applications as sorbents for non-ionic organic contaminants.

Sodium Cetyl Sulfate uses and applications include: Emulsifier; detergent; flotation agent; collector in ore flotation; softener, lubricant for textiles; emulsifier, surfactant in cosmetics, toiletries, paints; in cellophane for food packaging; in closure-sealing gaskets for food containers.

Industry Primarily Used    Cosmetics, Pharmaceuticals, Detergents & Home Care, Inks & Coatings
Description
Foaming and cleansing power at high temperatures; emulsifier
Halal Certified.

Chemical Properties
white solid

General Description
White paste or liquid with a mild odor. May float or sink in water.

Reactivity Profile
Salts, basic, such as Sodium Cetyl Sulfate, are generally soluble in water.
The resulting solutions contain moderate concentrations of hydroxide ions and have pH's greater than 7.0.
They react as bases to neutralize acids.
These neutralizations generate heat, but less or far less than is generated by neutralization of the bases in reactivity group 10 (Bases) and the neutralization of amines.
They usually do not react as either oxidizing agents or reducing agents but such behavior is not impossible.
Health Hazard
Contact with eyes causes mild irritation. May cause skin to dry out and become irritated.
Purification Methods
Recrystallise it from absolute EtOH or MeOH and dry it in vacuum .

The production is industrially synthetic.
The starting material is the fatty alcohol cetyl alcohol, obtained in oleochemistry or synthetically produced, which is sulfated either with chlorosulfonic acid, sulfur trioxide, sulfamic acid or with sulfuric acid.
The acid ester is usually neutralized with sodium hydroxide.

uses:
Sodium Cetyl Sulfate is approved in the EU as an ingredient in cosmetic products and functions as a cleaning, emulsifying, foam-forming and surface-active ingredient in cosmetics.

Sodium Cetyl Sulfate is often used as a mixture together with the homologous sodium stearyl sulfate obtained from steryl alcohol - see under Sodium Stearyl Sulfate.

Sodium Cetyl Sulfate, Hydrogen Sulfate Sodium Salt 1-Hexadecanol, Sodium Hexadecyl Sulfate, Sodium Hexadecyl Sulphate, Sodium Palmityl Sulfate, Cetyl Sodium Sulfate

Fatty alcohol of vegetable, animal or mineral origin - from petroleum, and saponified with sodium sulphate.
Anionic surfactant, soluble in water.

Action in cosmetics
Washing and foaming substance, applicable in all products for washing the body, face and hair. Thoroughly cleanses and degreases.
Due to its irritating effect, the ingredients usually contain other surfactants with properties that soothe the effects of anionic washing substances, e.g. Coco Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine or washing and re-oiling emulsifiers.

Classification : Sulfate
Its functions (INCI)
Cleaning Agent: Helps keep a clean surface
Emulsifying agent: Promotes the formation of intimate mixtures between immiscible liquids by modifying the interfacial tension (water and oil)
Foaming Agent: Captures small bubbles of air or other gases in a small volume of liquid by changing the surface tension of the liquid
Surfactant: Reduces the surface tension of cosmetics and contributes to the uniform distribution of the product during its use
