CAS : 61789-32-0
EINECS: 263-052-5

SYNONYMS:
SCI, isethionic acid sodium salt, bergasoft SCI 80 (trade name), SODIUM COCOYL ISETHIONATE (SCI) , Fatty acids, coco, 2-sulfoethyl esters, sodium salts , sodium 2-(cocoyloxy)ethanesulfonate

SODIUM COCOYL ISETHIONATE is a  mild anionic surfactant derived from coconut vegetable oil and presented in powder or granular form.
It is the result of the esterification reaction between the fatty acids of coconut oil and sodium isothionate alcohol.

Perfectly biodegradable, this surfactant of vegetable and synthetic origin is often used in so-called natural products.
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (Sci) does not contain any preservative.
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (Sci) is non-sulfated and non-ethoxylated.

APPLICATIONS:
Use in solid or liquid detergents
Shampoos, skin and facial cleansers,  raw material used in cosmetics

Properties:
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (Sci) works well in hard water and electrolyte solutions and can also effectively disperse calcium soap.
Solid surfactant  : combines with sodium lauryl sulfate  to formulate concentrated shampoos, in solid form

Detergent agent for making  very gentle washing products that are well tolerated by the skin.
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (Sci) Softens  formulas based on sodium coco sulfate
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (Sci) is Very good foaming power , even in hard water

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (Sci) Gives a  rich, creamy feel  and a  smooth lather
Conditioning effect on skin and hair: leaves a  very soft feel

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (Sci) is an ester of long-chain aliphatic carboxylic acids (fatty acids) obtained from coconut oil in combination with isethionic acid or sodium isethionate.
In fact, it belongs to the class of isethionates.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is the most important representative of this class of mild anionic surfactants.
SCI was marketed in the late 1920s under the brand name Igepon A as a particularly mild and hard water-resistant detergent substance.

In industrial processes, SCI is obtained by direct esterification of a mixture of coconut fatty acids with sodium isethionate in the presence of catalysts.

SCI is available in the form of flakes, granules or powder with about 85% active content (SCI-85).
There are also solid flakes (SCI-65) containing about 30% fatty acids.
SCI is poorly soluble in water and is not stable in long -term solution at pH values below 5 and above 8 due to its ester bond in the molecule.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (Sci) is nontoxic in animal experiments and has little toxicity to aquatic organisms.
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (Sci) is readily biodegradable and has a low affinity for bioaccumulation.
SCI is mildly to moderately irritating to the skin and eyes.

Exposure to spinal cord injury may cause minimal to mild skin irritation, although it is not a skin sensitizer.
Due to its excellent skin compatibility, pronounced foam formation and foam stability, SCI is also used in hard water.

Its good cleaning effect and pleasant skin feel make it an ingredient of choice in the composition of bar soaps.

Due to its low solubility in water (approx. 0.01% = 100 ppm at 25 °C), SCI must be solubilized for use in liquid washing solutions.
Besides soap bars, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is used in shampoos, shower gels, shaving foam, washing lotions and other cosmetic preparations.
