EINECS:    204-854-7

Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide is the organic compound with the formula CH3C6H4SO2NClNa.
Both the anhydrous salt and Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide's trihydrate are known.
Both are white powders.
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide is used as a reagent in organic synthesis.
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide is commonly used as cyclizing agent in the synthesis of aziridine, oxadiazole, isoxazole and pyrazoles.
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide's a inexpensive, low toxic and mild oxidizing agent, and it also acts as a source of nitrogen anions and eletrophilic cations.
But Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide may undergo degradation on long term exposure to atmosphere, so care must be taken during the storage.
white crystalline powder, with slight chlorine odor; Bitter taste.
Slow decomposition in air, gradually lose oxygen and become yellow.
Valid for 23% ~ 26%, the melting point of 167~170 deg C (decomposition).
Soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, glycerol, insoluble in chloroform, ether and benzene.
Slowly decompose in water and ethanol, and decompose vigorously in acidic medium, releasing oxygen.
When the aqueous solution is buffered to pH 9, it is more stable.
The anhydrate exploded at 175-180 °c.
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide does not decompose when dried at 90-100 °c.

Use
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide used as a substitute for standard solutions of iodine and hypochlorite in volumetric analysis, for the determination of bromate and halogen, for the determination of iodide, thallium and tin, used as reagents for the supply of chlorine, disinfectants, medicines (antiseptics).
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide is used as a bactericidal algicide for industrial water treatment, and can be used in combination with its bactericide.
Prepared into 0. 0004% aqueous solution for Disinfection treatment, 1%~ 2% solution can be directly administered.
In addition, Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide is used as a bleaching agent in the printing and dyeing industry, mainly for the bleaching of plant fibers and rayon and other fabrics, and can also be used as an oxidative Desizing agent for cotton.
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide used as a substitute for iodine and hypochlorite standard solutions in volumetric analysis.
Verification of bromate and halogen.
Determination of iodide, thallium and tin.

Synthesis
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide is prepared in 75 – 95 % yield by passing chlorine into a sodium hydroxide solution of p-toluenesulfonamide.
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide is a strong electrolyte in acid solution and a good oxidizing agent in base.
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide is fairly soluble in water, and practically insoluble in benzene, chloroform, and ether.
The compound reacts readily with mustard gas to yield a harmless crystalline sulfimide; Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide derivatives are being studied as protective agents against poison gas.

Reactions
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide contains active (electrophilic) chlorine.
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide's reactivity is similar to that of sodium hypochlorite.
Aqueous solutions of Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide are slightly basic (pH typically 8.5).
The pKa of the closely related N-chlorophenylsulfonamide C6H5SO2NClH is 9.5.
Sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide is prepared by oxidation of toluenesulfonamide with sodium hypochlorite, with the latter being produced in situ from sodium hydroxide and chlorine (Cl2):
