Light tan solid with a slight tallow-like odor. Sinks and mixes slowly with water.

Water soluble. Gives basic aqueous solution.
Reactivity Profile
Salts, basic, such as SODIUM OLEATE, are generally soluble in water. The resulting solutions contain moderate concentrations of hydroxide ions and have pH's greater than 7.0. They react as bases to neutralize acids. These neutralizations generate heat, but less or far less than is generated by neutralization of the bases in reactivity group 10 (Bases) and the neutralization of amines. They usually do not react as either oxidizing agents or reducing agents but such behavior is not impossible.

Sodium oleate is the sodium salt of oleic acid, amonounsaturated fatty acid. This anionic surfactant and emulsifier is a component of commercial soaps.An investigation of the effects of pH and temperature on the equilibrium and dynamic surface tension of aqueous sodium oleate solutions has been published.

Sodium Oleat (in triglyceride form) is included in the normal human diet as a part of animal fats and vegetable oils.

Oleic acid as its sodium salt is a major component of soap as an emulsifying agent. It is also used as an emollient . Small amounts of sodium oleat are used as an excipient in pharmaceuticals, and it is used as an emulsifying or solubilizing agent in aerosol products.

Sodium oleat  is also used to induce lung damage in certain types of animals, for the purpose of testing new drugs and other means to treat lung diseases. Specifically in sheep, intravenous administration of sodium oleat causes acute lung injury with corresponding pulmonary edema.This sort of research has been of particular benefit to premature newborns, for whom treatment for underdeveloped lungs (and associated complications) is often a matter of life and death.
