Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate

Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate is an anionic surfactant, emulsion stabilizer, dispersant  and suspending agent with a pH range between 7 - 9.
Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate is hydrotropic meaning it has the ability to enhance the water solubility of another surfactant.
As a dispersing agent it finds application in wide number of markets:  adhesive as a filler in polymers, water soluble paint, acrylic paint, and latex paint, paper making, textile printing and dyeing, electroplating additive; in pretreatment cleaners, post-treatment trivalent passivates,  pigment paste, water treatment, waterborne coatings and even in some cosmetics.

In the construction market Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate plays a very important role as an admixture in concrete known as superplasticizer.
Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate plays important role in concrete, cement, gypsum, and mortar mixes.
There are three different plasticizers; plasticizer, intermediate plasticizer, and superplasticizer.
Each defines water reduction capacity in the concrete mix while the concrete slump is basically unchanged.
Concrete plasticizers improve the rheology, mechanical, and flow properties of concrete while increasing concrete strength, promoting compaction, and providing optimium workability.
In summary, plasticizers reduce the amount of water and increase the strength of the concrete. Improve the pore structure of concrete and increase Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate's compactness.
Reduce the bleeding and segregation of concrete mixture and delay the setting time of the mixture.
Save cement consumption and reduce engineering cost and improve the quality of the concrete in the construction project.

The lignin, Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate when added to concrete reduces the water content in the mix by 5% but less than 12% and is known as a plasticizer.
Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate as an admixture plasticizer achieves three things:  first Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate reduces water consumption and increases the strength of the cement, second it improves the workability and fluidity of the concrete, and third Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate reduces the amount of cement used and the amount of water to maintain the same strength.

However,  Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate is a superplasticizer with the ability to reduce the water by 16% up to  25%.
Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate enables contemporary global superstructures such as bridges and high-rises constructed of concrete;  flow ability, compressive strength, low air permeability, good resistance to wear and tear, and longevity with economy.
There is one other super plasticizer that reduces water by 20 to 35% known as PCE (Polycarboxylate ether superplasticizer), however Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate is relatively expensive.
Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate is an  economic workhorse as superplasticizer.

Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate functions as an emulsion stabilizer, surfactant – dispersing
agent, and a surfactant – hydrotrope in cosmetic products.
Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate is used as a raw material in the production of admixtures for the construction industry and is one of the basic ingredients for formulation of chemical admixtures for concrete and mortars.
Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate is defined as the sodium salt of the product obtained by the condensation polymerization of 2-naphthalene sulfonic acid and formaldehyde.

Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate is used as a dispersing agent, tanning agent and latex stabilizer.
Ungraded products supplied by Spectrum are indicative of a grade suitable for general industrial use or research purposes and typically are not suitable for human consumption or therapeutic use.

Synthesis
The solution of naphthalene(550kg)was heated at 50°C for 4h in the reaction kettle.
Then cool down and pass water vapor to hydrolyze the by-product to give 1-naphthalenesulfonic acid.
After the hydrolysis is completed, formaldehyde (37%) is added under 196kPa.
Finally, alkali is added to neutralize to pH 8-10.
The mixtrue was cooling and crystallization, and filtered out to give the product, Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate.

Production Method
Preparation process of Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate: sulfonation of acenaphthalene, condensation of sulfonated product with formaldehyde, neutralization and three steps.
550kg of refined naphthalene was put into the reaction vessel, and the temperature was raised to 50 ° C. For 4H.
Then, the temperature is lowered and water vapor is passed through, and the by-product of hydrolysis is obtained as 1-Naphthalene sulfonic acid.
After completion of the hydrolysis, the material was driven into a polycondensation kettle, and 37% aqueous formaldehyde solution was added to react at a pressure of 196 kPa.
Finally, neutralization to pH 8-10 was carried out by addition of alkali.
The reaction was completed.
Cooling crystallization, filtering out the crude product after drying for the finished product.
The preparation process includes three steps: sulfonation of methyl naphthalene, condensation and neutralization of sulfonated product with formaldehyde.
130 of methylnaphthalene was put into a sulfonation kettle, heated and melted, stirred, and heated to 140-° C. For reaction 2.
Then, 210L of water was added under rapid stirring, and the acidity was measured by sampling after stirring for half an hour.
If the total acidity was 25%-27%, Sodium Polynaphthalene Sulfonate was qualified.
Cool to 90-100 °c.
A 37% solution of formaldehyde in water was added in one portion.
The reaction temperature is controlled at 130~140 ℃ and the pressure is 0.15~0.20MPa.
Reaction 2H allowed for full condensation.
After completion of the condensation, 30% alkali solution was added and neutralized to a pH of about 7.
Finally, the crystals are cooled, filtered, and the crystals are dried.
