Sodium pyrithione 40%

Sodium Pyrithione is a clear 40% aqueous solution of amber-colored sodium pyrithione that prevents metalworking fluids from deteriorating and degrading. Metalworking fluids are breeding grounds for microorganisms, especially bacteria and fungi, but they can be reduced or eliminated with the proper use of an antimicrobial agent.

• Recommended use levels of sodium pyrithione:

Sodium pyrithione is very active against microorganisms. In water-based functional fluids (metalworking fluids,
fluids, water-based latex paints, adhesives, glues, lubricants, storage in boxes, liquid cooling, treatment systems, leather, ...)
0.01 to 0.1% active ingredient is sufficient to control microbial growth. Depending on the application, we recommend using
an additional bactericide or fungicide.
Architectural paints for exterior applications can be protected against the growth of algae and mold with Sodium Pyrithione,
however, light stability and leachability could be critical.

• Chemical stability and compatibility Sodium pyrithione

Sodium pyrithione is stable under normal environmental conditions if stored in the original (dark colored) packaging and closed.
The aqueous sodium pyrithione solution is stable at pH values ​​above 6.5. The addition of sodium pyrithione does not affect the
alkalinity of most metalworking fluids. At low pH values ​​free pyrithione is formed.
Sodium pyrithione is photosensitive in aqueous solutions and discoloration may occur if exposed to direct sunlight or UV rays.
Today, we have no evidence that any discoloration influences effectiveness.
Sodium pyrithione is compatible with most raw materials used in technical applications. Discoloration may occur in the presence of
oxidizing agents or heavy metals. Because this phenomenon is also dependent on pH and other ingredients, a stability test is
highly recommended.

Description of Sodium Pyrithione:

Sodium pyrithione inhibits the growth of fungi, yeasts,
mold and bacteria. Sodium zinc salt of pyrithione
N-oxide is widely used in cosmetics and shampoos. In
acidic media, amine N-oxides are cationic and can act
as a mild conditioner. They are used in body care
some products. Pyridinethione derivatives belong to a class
cyclic organosulfur products containing sulfur
atom (S), and often oxygen (O), nitrogen (N),
hydrogen (H) as well as other elements can be found.

Stability of sodium pyrithione
Sodium pyrithione is unstable under the following conditions: When heated to decomposition (250 degrees Celsius) it emits oxides of nitrogen and sulfur. Hygroscopic, photosensitive.
