A pale yellow to amber, clear alkaline liquid in its commercial 50% aqueous solution form (TT-50), sodium tolyltriazole is the water-soluble, directly dosable ionic form of tolyltriazole — providing the same copper and yellow metal corrosion inhibition mechanism as neutral TTA (chemisorption via N → Cu coordination bonds to form a multilayer, insoluble Cu–TTA coordination polymer passivation film) while offering substantially higher water solubility (664 g/L at 20°C vs. negligible for solid TTA), complete miscibility with glycols, full compatibility with highly alkaline systems (pH above 10 and below 2, where solid TTA is preferred over benzotriazole), and the practical advantage of simple dilution dosing without prior dissolution.
Sodium tolyltriazole is superior to solid TTA in aqueous formulation applications because in alkaline media (pH >7) the tolyltriazolate anion (the deprotonated form of TTA, pKa 8.37 for TTA / 8.85 for TTA·Na) is the dominant species in solution and provides the same corrosion inhibition efficiency as neutral TTA; TT-50 eliminates the need for pre-dissolution in alcohol or alkali before dosing into the water system, allows fast and accurate treatment solution preparation at any concentration from <0.5 to 6% (typical industrial dosing range: 2–10 mg/L), and is effective at lower odour levels than benzotriazole sodium salt.

Uses of Sodium Tolyltriazole:
Sodium tolyltriazole is used as the primary copper and yellow metal corrosion inhibitor in open and closed recirculating cooling water systems — cooling towers, heat exchangers, chilled-water HVAC circuits, district cooling systems, and condenser circuits — dosed directly into the circulating water at 2–10 mg/L (active TTA·Na) by continuous or slug-dose addition; it forms a stable Cu–TTA passivation film on copper tube surfaces, protecting against pitting corrosion, galvanic attack, and copper ion release; TT-50 can be used in combination with phosphonates, phosphates, molybdates, scale inhibitors, and biocides in complete water treatment programmes.
Sodium tolyltriazole is used in automotive antifreeze and engine coolant formulations (ethylene glycol and propylene glycol based, OAT and HOAT types) as the copper and yellow metal corrosion inhibitor, at concentrations of 0.01–2.0%; TT-50 is preferred over solid TTA in coolant concentrate production because it dissolves instantly in glycol-water blends without requiring pre-dissolution; it protects copper, brass, and aluminium components of the cooling system — radiators, heater cores, water pump impellers — across the full service temperature and pH range of the coolant.
