SODIUM TRIMETHYL PHOSPHATE

CAS:    7785-84-4
MF:    3Na.O9P3
MW:    305.88
EINECS:    232-088-3

Sodium trimethyl phosphate, with formula Na3P3O9, is a metaphosphate of sodium.
Sodium trimethyl phosphate has the empirical formula NaPO3.
Sodium trimethyl phosphate is the sodium salt of trimetaphosphoric acid.
Sodium trimethyl phosphate is a colourless solid that finds specialised applications in food and construction industries.
Sodium trimethyl phosphate is prepared by heating samples sodium polyphosphate.
Although drawn with a particular resonance structure, the trianion has D3d symmetry.
Hydrolysis of the ring leads to the acyclic Sodium trimethyl phosphate:

Na3P3O9 + H2O → H2Na3P3O10

The main reactions of the triphosphate anion is ring-opening by nucleophiles, including amines.
Sodium trimethyl phosphate is registered under the REACH Regulation and is manufactured in and / or imported to the European Economic Area, at ≥ 1 000 to < 10 000 tonnes per annum.
Sodium trimethyl phosphate is used by consumers, in articles, by professional workers (widespread uses), in formulation or re-packing, at industrial sites and in manufacturing.
Sodium trimethyl phosphate is white Crystal or crystalline powder.
Melting point 627.6 °c. Density 2.476g/cm3.
Readily soluble in water (2lg/lOOmL), the pH of the 1% aqueous solution is 6.0.
The addition of sodium chloride to the aqueous solution results in the formation of crystals of the hexahydrate salt.

Consumer Uses
Sodium trimethyl phosphate is used in the following products: adhesives and sealants, coating products, fillers, putties, plasters, modelling clay, fertilisers, inks and toners, pharmaceuticals, polymers, washing & cleaning products and cosmetics and personal care products.
Other release to the environment of Sodium trimethyl phosphate is likely to occur from: indoor use (e.g. machine wash liquids/detergents, automotive care products, paints and coating or adhesives, fragrances and air fresheners) and outdoor use.
Sodium trimethyl phosphate works as the crosslinking agent in the cross-linked amylase-resistant starch.
Sodium trimethyl phosphate, Na3[P3O9], is the most stable compound of this group of reagents.
The hydrated form of Sodium trimethyl phosphate contains 6 or 10 molecules of water of crystallization.
Commercial production is obtained by heating NaPO3 at 525 °C.
Sodium trimethyl phosphate used in the food industry as a starch modifier, juice turbidity prevention agent, meat Binder, dispersant and stabilizer (for ice cream, cheese, etc.).
Can prevent food discoloration and prevent the decomposition of vitamin C.
Sodium trimethyl phosphate is also used as a water softening agent

Sodium trimethyl phosphate is used for the manufacture of: chemicals, textile, leather or fur, metals, fabricated metal products, machinery and vehicles and .
Release to the environment of Sodium trimethyl phosphate can occur from industrial use: in processing aids at industrial sites, in the production of articles, as an intermediate step in further manufacturing of another substance (use of intermediates) and as processing aid.

Preparation Method
The edible sodium dihydrogen phosphate is heated, dehydrated at 95 ℃ to become anhydrous sodium dihydrogen phosphate, and then sent into the box type polymerization furnace to heat and melt polymerization.
When the material temperature is 140~200 ℃, first, Sodium trimethyl phosphate is converted into sodium pyrophosphate, and then Sodium trimethyl phosphate is converted into cyclic sodium metaphosphate when heated to 260 ℃, and then it is polymerized to synthesize trimetaphosphoric acid when heated to 500 ℃.
After cooling and grinding, the edible Sodium trimethyl phosphate is prepared.

Analytic Methods:
Sodium trimethyl phosphate is suggested that dusts of trisodium phosphate be collected in an impinger containing distilled water which may then be titrated with a standard solution of sulfuric acid.
They may also be analyzed for P2O3 content by precipitation of ammonium phosphomolybdate followed by redissolving in standard alkali & back-titrating with acid.
Gravimetric procedures are also available, as are NMR spectroscopy & ion exchange chromatography.
