SODIUM VINYL SULFONATE

CAS:    3039-83-6
MF:    C2H3O3S.Na
MW:    130.1
EINECS:    221-242-5

Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate is the organosulfur compound with the chemical formula CH2=CHSO3H.
Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate is the simplest unsaturated sulfonic acid.
The C=C double bond is a site of high reactivity.
Polymerization gives polyvinylsulfonic acid, especially when used as a comonomer with functionalized vinyl and (meth)acrylic acid compounds.
Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate is a colorless, water-soluble liquid, although commercial samples can appear yellow or even red.
Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate may also be grafted to polymeric supports (e.g. polystyrene) to give highly acidic ion exchangers, which used as catalysts for esterification and Friedel-Crafts acylations.
Where the Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate functionality is not essential, the much more usable alkaline aqueous solution of sodium vinylsulfonate is used, which is obtained directly in the alkaline hydrolysis of the carbyl sulfate and is commercially supplied as an aqueous solution.
Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate is a useful reagent (monomer) for the formation of poly(anionic) polymers and copolymers.
Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate is employed as a basic brightener and leveling agent in nickel baths.

Conversion monomers and copolymerization-type emulsifiers for various polymers, in the sulfoethyl and other classes (e. G., styrene, butadiene, Acrylate, etc.) emulsion polymerization with good mechanical stability and stability of the metal salt emulsion additives, the environment has a good adaptability to PH changes, and the dosage of all kinds of emulsifier is more economical.

Use
The activated C=C double bond of vinylsulfonic acid reacts readily with nucleophiles in an addition reaction.
Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate is formed with ammonia and 2-methylaminoethanesulfonic acid with methylamine.
Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate is the monomer in the preparation of highly acidic or anionic homopolymers and copolymers.
These polymers are used in the electronic industry as photoresists, as ion-conductive polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM) for fuel cells.
For example, transparent membranes with high ion exchange capacity and proton conductivity can be produced from polyvinylsulfonic acid.

Widely used in the synthesis of pure acrylic, styrene acrylic, acetate acrylic and other emulsions, with stability and resistance, reducing shrinkage cavity and other phenomena, and can be used in synthetic fibers, conversion monomers of various polymers, sulfoethylation additives, electroplating gloss agents, surfactants, pharmaceutical intermediates, etc.
Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate can be used as an adhesive composition.

Action and mechanism
1. in bright nickel plating, adding sodium vinylsulfonate (VS) can improve the deep plating ability of the plating solution, improve the ductility and brightness of the plating layer.
2. As an auxiliary brightener, Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate is usually used in conjunction with saccharin, SAS, PPS, etc.
3. Sodium Vinyl Sulfonate is not dangerous and should be stored in a cool and dry place.
