SORBETH-30

CAS Number: 53694-15-8

A light yellow, water loving liquid that works as a self-emulsifying surfactant.
Sorbeth-30 popular in oil cleansers as Sorbeth-30 allows the oils to interact with water for easy rinsability.

Hydrophilic emulsifier for a wide range of substances; suitable for non-polar oils such as liquid paraffin, etc.; plant-derived
Sorbeth-30 is a triester of Oleic Acid (q.v.) and a polyethylene glycol ether of Sorbitol (q.v.) containing an average of 30 moles of ethylene oxide.

Polyoxyethylene Sorbitol also known as Sorbeth-30.
Sometimes classified as a PEG.

Polyoxyethylene Sorbitol is used in cosmetics and beauty products primarily as a surfactant and emulsifier.
Sorbeth-30 has the ability to be effective at low concentrations, to remain a stable ingredient, and is less irritating than many other conventional surfactants, according to a 1978 Japanese study entitled "Some characteristics of polyoxyethylene sorbitol: Oligomer type emulsifier."

Also notes that Polyoxyethylene Sorbitol, as part of the PEG Sorbitan/Sorbitol Fatty Acid Esters group, reduces surface tension in emulsions, therefore making Sorbeth-30 easier for other ingredients to dissolve.
Sorbeth-30 also helps water and oil, and oil and dirt, to mix, therefore allowing them to be whisked away more easily.

Appearance of Sorbeth-30:
Pale yellow to yellow liquid or petrolatum-like substance

Functions of Sorbeth-30:
Emulsifying agent: Promotes the formation of intimate mixtures between immiscible liquids by modifying the interfacial tension (water and oil)

Sorbeth-30 has a molecular weight associated with all PEGs.
Sorbeth-30 low molecular weight of 30 means that Sorbeth-30 can penetrate healthy skin, but minimally.

Sorbeth-30 has several functions, most often Sorbeth-30 is:
VISCOSITY CONTROL AGENT, Sorbeth-30 role is to increase or decrease the viscosity of cosmetic products.

HUMECTANT, Sorbeth-30 role is to maintain the humidity in the product throughout its use.

SOLVENT, Sorbeth-30 role is to dissolve or dilute the ingredients in the cosmetic product.

SURFACTANT - EMULSIFIER, Sorbeth-30 role is to mix the aqueous and oily phases of a formula to create an emulsion.

SORBETH-30 is classified as:
Emulsifying
Humectant
Solvent
Viscosity controlling

Storage of Sorbeth-30:
Store at room temperature Avoid heat and sunlight.
Shelf life is 2 years.
If stored in a cool place, it will thicken.
