Sorbitan ester is a mixture of isomeric organic compounds derived from the dehydration of sorbitol and is an intermediate in the conversion of sorbitol to isosorbide.
Sorbitan ester is primarily used in the production of surfactants such as polysorbates; which are important emulsifying agents, with a total annual demand of more than 10000 tons in 2012.

Sorbitan esters are lipophilic nonionic surfactants, based purely on renewable raw materials of vegetable origin.
Sorbitan esters of sorbitan and fatty acids are preferred as w/o emulsifiers or o/w co-emulsifiers in natural personal care applications.

Sorbitan esters are also used in a variety of technical applications as emulsifiers, dispersant, and antifogging agents.
Sorbitan ester is a non-ionic surfactant that can be used to form oil-in-water emulsions and in combination with low HLB surfactants can form water-in-oil emulsions.

Sorbitan ester is a low HLB surfactant suggested for use as a w/o emulsifier or as an o/w emulsifier for use in cosmetic formulations, oil field chemicals, plastics, household products, coatings and textiles.
The liquid sorbitan ester explosive grade functions as a low HLB nonionic emulsifier.

Sorbitan ester is well suited for a broad number of applications including emulsifier in explosives.
Sorbitan ester is used as a wetting agent, coupling agent and dispersing agent in various products.

In cosmetics, pharmaceutical creams, and various other personal care products, Sorbitan ester is used as friction modifier and emulsifier.
Sorbitan ester clear viscous oily liquid is used for ethoxilation.

We at Univenture manufacture Sorbitan ester as per the client requirement as Sorbitan ester is used in various applications like Pharmaceuticals, Emulsion Polymerization, Foaming Agent in Beverage Mixes, Bakery Food, Pet Food, Cosmetics, Agrochemical, Leather Chemicals, Textile Auxiliaries and in emulsion explosives.
An emulsifier Sorbitan monooleate is used as a lipophillic non-ionic surfactant, emulsifier, stabilizer for oil based lotions, ointments, in textiles as antistat, lubricant for fabric softener, sweetening agent, food additive, toothpaste, tobacco, toiletries and in cosmetics.

Sorbitan ester serves as a dispersant in oil field chemicals and as a corrosion Inhibitor.
Further, Sorbitan ester plays as an important role as excipient and intravenous osmotic diuretic in pharmaceutical fields.

USES OF SORBITAN ESTERS:

As emulsifiers, stabilizers, and thickeners in foods, cosmetics, and medicinal products.
In the textile industry as fiber lubricants and softeners. Pharmaceutic aid (surfactant).

Sorbitan esters are high-boiling, waxy and / or viscous organic substances that contain hydrophilic (water-related) and lipophilic (fat-related) structural elements.
Due to this they are surfactants and act as emulsifiers.

They serve to stabilize crystal structures in fat, as foaming agents, and improve the flowability of liquid margarine and other fat emulsions.
Sorbitan esters are authorized in the EU as food additives: E 491, E 492, E 493, E 494 and E 495, and are used in certain foods, each with a fixed maximum limit.

Sorbitan Ester  are used as a solubilizer and surfactant in the preparation of emulsions, creams, soaps and ointments in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
Sorbitan esters are used as emulsifiers, defoamers and stabilizers in the food, medicine, vitamin and vaccine industries.
Sorbitan esters are also used in agrochemical formulations, in the metalworking industry, as anti-fogging agents in plastic films and as textile fiber lubricants, softeners and emulsifiers in polymerisation processes in the textile and leather industries.

SYNTHESIS OF SORBITAN ESTERS:

Sorbitan Ester is produced by the dehydration of sorbitol and is an intermediate in the conversion of sorbitol to isosorbide.
The dehydration reaction usually produces sorbitan as a mixture of five- and six-membered cyclic ethers (1,4-anhydrosorbitol, 1,5-anhydrosorbitol and 1,4,3,6-dianhydrosorbitol) with the five-membered 1,4-anhydrosorbitol form being the dominate product.

The rate of formation of Sorbitan Ester is typically greater than that of isosorbide, which allows it to be produced selectively, providing the reaction conditions are carefully controlled.
The dehydration reaction has been shown to work even in the presence of excess water.
