SORBITAN OLEATE

A mainly oil-loving, vegetable raw material based ingredient that helps water and oil to mix together, aka emulsifier. It can also function as a wetting and dispersing agent helping insoluble particles such as color pigments or inorganic sunscreens (zinc/titanium dioxide) to disperse nice and even in liquids.

Chemically speaking, it comes from the attachment of sorbitan (a dehydrated sorbitol (sugar) molecule) with the unsaturated fatty acid Oleic Acid, that creates a partly water (the sorbitan part) and partly oil soluble (oleic part) molecule.

Sorbitan Oleate is the monoester of oleic acid (a source of omegas) and hexitol anhydrides derived from sorbitol (often used as a humectant). It is used in a variety of formulas used in the cosmetic industry, including skin care products, skin cleansing products, moisturizers, eye makeup and other makeup, according . Although also seen as a fragrance ingredient and surfactant, it is primarily used as an emulsifier, and is especially suited formulations containing vegetable oils. It is considered a good co-emulsifier for lotions and other emulsions.

Abstract
The invention relates to a preparation method of sorbitan oleate servicing as a medicinal auxiliary material. The preparation method is characterized by comprising the following steps: adding powdered solid sorbitol into a reactor; stirring; heating to 80-105 DEG C to melt the powdered solid sorbitol; adding an acidic catalyst; agitating; dewatering at 90-110 DEG C at a vacuum condition; neutralizing the rest acidic catalyst after the reaction; filtering; decolouring; filtering; concentrating; drying to obtain 1,4-sorbitan; adding oleic acid into the reactor, the prepared 1, 4-sorbitan and a basic catalyst, wherein the mass ratio of the 1, 4-sorbitan to the oleic acid is 1:(2.06-2.41); pouring nitrogen and removing the oxygen; stirring and heating; carrying out esterification reaction at 190 to 210 DEG C; and then carrying out cooling, decolouring and filtering after the reaction so as to obtain the sorbitan oleate. The preparation method is simple in process and short in reaction time; the prepared product which is the sorbitan oleate is light in colour and high in purity; and the physicochemical performance of the sorbitan oleate meets the requirement.

Sorbitan monooleate (Span 80) is a partial oleate ester of sorbitol and its mono- and dianhydrides. Sorbitan Monooleate is a nonionic emulsifier and surfactant and used in cosmetics and foods. It is a food additive with the E number E495. Sorbitan Oleate is an emulsifier that can also be found in moisturizers, hair-styling products and soaps. It helps bind ingredients together and keep a formula from separating. In fragranced products, it also helps ensure even distribution of the fragrance.

Sorbitan monooleate is a nonionic surfactant, a derivative of sorbitan and oleic acid. It is obtained in the condensation reaction of sorbitol with oleic acid. It is produced in the form of a yellow to dark brown liquid. It is insoluble in water.

Sorbitan monooleate is quenched with its foaming feature. It is also a universal emulsifier. It is mainly used as a water-in-oil (W / O) emulsifier, but can be used as an oil-in-water co-emulsifier (O / W) with sorbitan monooleate products.

As an emulsifier, it can be used in emulsion explosives in the mining industry. The properties of sorbitan monooleate are used in the processing of liquids and non-aqueous formulations.

This product acts as a PVC plasticizer for the production of facts for coating paper and metal foils. It is an emulsion stabilizer for the polymerization of styrene, butadiene and butadiene-styrene copolymer. In addition, it works as a dispersant of pigments, a dispersant of petroleum substances spilled on its surface, an asphaltene dispersant, one in fillers in many formulations.

It is used as an emulsifier, lubricant and moisturizer in cosmetics and is found in lotions, creams, hair care products and sunscreens, lipsticks, depilatory creams.

Sorbitan monooleate is used in pastes for chrome plated parts and in other formulations for automotive chemistry.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS
Sorbitan Oleate is an emulsifier made from oleic acid (from olive oil) and sorbitol (a natural sugar alcohol). It is biodegradable, non-toxic and a non-irritant. It is used in a variety of formulas within the cosmetic industry, including skin care products, makeup and more. Emulsifiers make it possible for water and oil to become finely dispersed in each other, creating a stable, homogenous, smooth emulsion whereas naturally they separate.

Sorbitan monooleate is an oil soluble, water dispersible emulsifier.   Sorbitan monooleate acts as a nonionic water in oil emulsifier, as well as a co-emulsifier for oil in water emulsions.  Suitable for use in lotions, creams, hair care, and sunscreens.

Sorbitans are derived from dehydration of sorbitol or sorbose and related compounds in ester combination with fatty acids and with short oligo (ethylene oxide) side chains and an oleate terminus to form detergents and surfactants such as polysorbate 80. Their appearance may vary from an amber-colored oily, viscous liquid, to a light cream color, to tan beads or flakes or a hard, waxy solid with a slight odor They are also used as surfactants or emulsifying agents in the preparation of emulsions, creams, and ointments for pharmaceutical and cosmetic use.
It is used as an emulsifier and stabilizer for cementing, completion and stimulation. Fragrance Ingredient; Surfactant - Emulsifying Agent. Used in skin care formulations, hair oil formulations.

Sorbitan ester widely used in personal care products. W/O emulsifier, particularly recommended for unsaturated lipid components such as oleyl alcohol or vegetable oils. Dispersing agent for insoluble liquids in other lipophilic liquids. Sorbitan oleate is used as a wetting agent and dispersant for pigments in colour cosmetics and zinc oxide/titanium dioxide in sun care products. Approved natural by Ecocert. Croda considers the RSPO’s Mass Balance system to be an important progressive step in supporting the palm oil physical supply chain and creating momentum towards segregated sustainable Palm Oil and Palm Kernel Oil material. To that end, sampling will be of the sustainable palm variant, SP Span 80 MBAL.

Sorbitan monooleate, also known as sorbitan oleate/SMO, is synthesized by the esterification of sorbitan with oleic acid.

Sorbitan monooleate is commonly used in combination with polysorbate 80.

Water-insoluble non-ionic surfactants like Sorbitan Monooleate are made by esterifying partial sorbitol anhydrides with digestible fatty acids.
General manufacturing of Span-type materials consists of partial esters of common fatty acids (lauric, palmitic, stearic and oleic) and hexitol anhydrides (lexitans and hexides) derived from sorbitol.

Sorbitan Monooleate is a non-ionic surfactant used as an emulsifying agent for the preparation of Water-in-Oil emulsions (HLB 4.3). It is added in small quantities to many foods, beverages, and cosmetics.

Sorbitan Monooleate is a surface-active agent that modifies the interfacial tension of water due to its polar head group, and long lipophilic hydrocarbon tail.
The hydrophilic character of Sorbitan Monooleate is due to the free hydroxyl and oxyethylene groups, while the liphophilic portion is found in the long chain fatty acid.

Sorbitan monooleate is an extremely mild but very powerful nonionic emulsifier.
Sorbitan monooleate is part of a broad range of ester materials including sorbitan esters, mono and diglycerides, and polyoxyethylene sorbitol esters.
