Native to East Asia, the Glycine max (or soybean) plant contains many nutritional and medicinal properties.
Originally domesticated in China, the soybean has since spread around the world, becoming commonplace in numerous recipes and used in foods such as soya sauce, tempeh, and soy milk, which is primarily used to produce tofu.

We know it’s astounding for our diets, but what are the advantages and disadvantages of using soybean in skincare?

Soybean extract is beneficial for the skin in several capacities.
During the microbial fermentation process of the soybean, nutrients such as fatty acids, amino acids, and isoflavones are broken down into several substances.
The proteins and amino acids found in soybean extract promote anti-aging capabilities by increasing firmness and elasticity in the skin, which is naturally lost over time.

The extraction process involves an even greater range of compounds, including carbohydrates, fiber, minerals, and proteins.
The soybean is considered to be a complete protein, being a favorable plant-based protein source for those with vegetarian and vegan lifestyles.

Once extracted, this ingredient is packed with antioxidants, the two cores being genistein and daidzein.
Both of these antioxidants are naturally-occurring isoflavones in the body and are classified as phytoestrogen, meaning they mimic and interact with estrogen in the body.

They are known for their ability to help regulate hormonal levels, provide anti-cancer benefits, as well as improve bone and cardiovascular health.
Though these antioxidants are capable of many effects, further studies still need to be concluded to understand their full potential in both healthcare and skincare.

Soybean extract is often touted as a natural ingredient that offers various benefits for the skin, including brightening effects.

Every day, our skin is exposed to UV radiation, causing conditions such as sunburns, hyperpigmentation, premature aging signs, and even some skin cancers.
Given the abundant presence of antioxidants in soybean extract, these contribute to a healthier and more radiant complexion.

The enzymes in soybean extract in particular inhibit melanin production, the pigment responsible for skin coloration.
Additionally, soybean extract has been studied for its potential in addressing hyperpigmentation issues, such as dark spots or uneven skin tone.
Individual results pertaining to soybean extract can vary, and the effectiveness of soybean extract for brightening skin can depend on various factors, including the concentration and formulation of the extract used, as well as an individual's unique skin characteristics.

If you're interested in incorporating soybean extract into your skincare routine for its brightening effects, search for products that are formulated by reputable brands and have undergone clinical testing for desired results.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SOYBEAN EXTRACT

Aside from its many nutritional benefits and prevalence of antioxidants, soybean extract can cause side effects for some users.
Common adverse reactions include allergic sensitivities that produce symptoms such as rashes, redness, and itching.

The extract may also negatively interact with certain medications, particularly those metabolized by liver enzymes.
Always be sure to consult with your physician if you are taking prescription medications before trying a new skincare product or formulation.

While there’s no doubt in regards to the benefits of soybean extract in skincare, acne-prone skin can be a complex condition that can be influenced by many factors, such as excess sebum production, clogged pores, bacterial growth, and inflammation.

What works for one skincare user may not work for another, as individual skin types and reactions can vary.
Some users may even have soy allergies or sensitivities, which will prevent them from taking advantage of some of the benefits of the extract.

When searching for products containing soybean extract, we recommend Matriplex™ Peptide Intense Cream.
Along with other active ingredients such as an advanced Matrixyl® complex formula and niacinamide, soybean extract works to promote a smoother, brighter complexion and eliminate dark spots and blemishes.

Simultaneously, it contains moisturizing properties found in emollients, preventing water loss and improving the skin’s protective barrier.

Aside from the extract’s known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, it has been shown to be useful in some users when it comes to acne-prone skin.
However, soybean oil is considered to have a moderately high comedogenic rating, which means it has the potential to clog pores and contribute to acne breakouts.
The comedogenicity of an ingredient often varies depending on individual skin types and sensitivities.

For individuals with acne-prone skin, it's generally recommended to avoid or use caution with ingredients that have a high comedogenic rating.
Soybean oil may not be the best choice for those with acne-prone skin, as it has the potential to exacerbate breakouts or contribute to the formation of new acne lesions.

If you're specifically looking for oils to use on acne-prone skin, you may want to consider lighter, non-comedogenic oils such as jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, or rosehip seed oil, which are often considered safer options with few adverse effects.

The effectiveness of soybean extract in skin care products can depend on factors such as product formulation, concentration, and individual skin type.
While soybean extract shows promise in research, the findings are not conclusive, and more studies are needed to fully understand its potential benefits and any potential risks or interactions with medications.

As with any dietary or supplement consideration, it’s advisable to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional before incorporating soybean extract or products containing soy into your skincare routine.
