Steareth 10 is an extremely versatile nonionic surface active agent. It may be employed as primary or secondary oil-in-water emulsifiers, bodying agents or opacifiers, enabling the formulation of a variety of cosmetic and pharmaceutical systems. This grade produces emulsions of a heavier nature and is ideal for the formulation of heavy bodied creams and as an auxiliary emulsifier or stabiliser.

Safety Information:
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) permits fatty alcohols (including stearic alcohol) reacted with polyethylene glycol to be used as indirect food additives as components of textiles and textile fibers. The safety of Steareth-2, Steareth-4, Steareth-6, Steareth-7, Steareth-10, Steareth-11, Steareth-13, Steareth-15 and Steareth-20 has been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. The CIR Expert Panel evaluated the scientific data and concluded that these ingredients were safe as cosmetic ingredients in the present practices of use and concentration. In 2006, as part of the scheduled re-evaluation of ingredients, the CIR Expert Panel considered available new data on the Steareth ingredients and reaffirmed the above conclusion.
Its functions
Emulsifying : Promotes the formation of intimate mixtures between immiscible liquids by modifying the interfacial tension (water and oil)
Refatting : Restores the lipids of the hair or upper layers of the skin
Surfactant : Reduces the surface tension of cosmetics and contributes to the even distribution of the product when it is used.
The phase behaviour of polyoxyethylene 10 stearyl ether/geraniol/olive oil/HO system and preliminary evaluation of fragrance evaporation
Abstract
Synopsis The phase diagram of system polyoxyethylene 10 stearyl ether (Steareth 10)/geraniol/olive oil/H(2)O was determined using visual observation and low angle X-ray diffraction. The system formed two isotropic solution phases: water and a geraniol solution of Steareth 10 and water. In addition a lamellar liquid crystal was formed along the water-Steareth 10 axis. It solubilized geraniol and olive oil in different locations within its structure with maximum solubilization depending on the site. Geraniol is only solubilized in the hydrocarbon chain part of the bilayer, while olive oil is solubilized both at that site and between the terminal methyl group layers. The results provided essential information about the behaviour of geraniol during evaporation.
APPEARANCE
White to off-white pastilles with characteristic odor
What Is Steareth-10?
Steareth-10 is a synthetic ingredient that functions as a cleansing agent, a surfactant, and an emulsifier in a variety of cosmetics and skincare products. The group of steareth ingredients are synthetic compounds that are created through a process known as ethoxylation, a chemical reaction in which ethylene oxide is added to a substrate. With steareth-10, the substrate is stearyl alcohol, a fatty alcohol that is derived from stearic acid. The number associated with the steareth-10 indicates the average number of repeating ethylene oxide units in the molecule. The steareth ingredients are waxy solids that can be used in cosmetics at concentrations of up to 25 percent.
Steareth-10 is a co-emulsifier oil-in-water, typically combined with Arlatone 983. It is used in skin care, hair care, toiletries and decorative cosmetics. The Brij™ Series of surfactants are polyoxyethylene vegetable-based fatty ethers derived from lauryl, cetyl, stearyl and oleyl alcohols. These materials are naturally derived, mild, and virtually odorless nonionic surfactants, and as a series, offer a diverse set of emulsifying characteristics allowing them to confer unique bodying, spreading and stabilizing properties to emulsions.Steareth-10 surfactants manifest synergistic behavior, they can achieve even greater effects when used together. The extraordinary synergism shown by Steareth-10 blends is particularly evident in the case of difficult-to-formulate emulsions, such as clear gel microemulsions and alkali-based hair straighteners.
"Permeation enhancer." Used as a surfactant. Used to make cosmetics, cleaning-maintenance-laundry products, construction chemicals, coatings, inks, metalworking fluid concentrates, lubricants-greases, textile dying-finishing-impregnating products, metal surface treatment products (including those for galvanizing and electroplating), in polymerization reactions, plant protection-seed treatment products, textile and leather manufacture, and as a laboratory reagent. Permitted for use as an inert ingredient in non-food pesticide products.
The isothermal phase diagram of the quaternary system polyoxyethylene(10) stearyl ether (Brij-76)/1-butanol/isooctane/water has been constructed at 30 degrees C with equal amounts of oil and water. A regular fishtail diagram was obtained, confirming the establishment of hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) in the system. Mixing of formamide (FA) [or N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF)] with water as a cosolvent altered the HLB and decreased the solubilization capacity of the quaternary system. No three-phase body appeared at high FA or DMF content. Similar observations were noted for temperature-induced phase diagrams. The effect of DMF was more pronounced than that of FA in reducing the maximum solubilization capacity. The results have been summarized on the basis of HLB and mutual solubility of the components.Steareth-10 is an ethoxylated natural fatty alcohol, based on stearyl alcohol chemistry. This naturally derived surfactant offers a number of functional benefits including wetting and high foaming to a variety of applications.
Polyoxyethylene (POE) fatty ethers
The BRIJ SERIES of surfactants are polyoxyethylene vegetable-based fatty ethers derived from lauryl, cetyl, stearyl and oleyl alcohols. BRIJ surfactants are stable to acids and alkalies beyond the pH range that ester type emulsifiers can withstand. Hence, the BRIJ SERIES are useful for emulsifying fats and oils in highly acidic or alkaline media. The series contains both hydrophilic and lipophilic products. Depending on the HLB, BRIJ surfactants can be used to form either oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions or water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions, solubilize oils and improve wetting. These products are widely used in personal care, fiber finish and HI&I cleaning, crop protection, paints and coatings, adhesives and other industrial applications.
What Is It?
The Steareth ingredients (Steareth-2, Steareth-4, Steareth-6, Steareth-7, Steareth-10, Steareth-11, Steareth-13, Steareth-15, Steareth-20) are polyethylene glycol ethers of stearci acid. They are waxy compounds. In cosmetics and personal care products, Steareth ingredients are used in the formulation of personal cleanliness products and deodorants, as well as suntan, fragrance, skin, eye and hair products.
Why is it used in cosmetics and personal care products?
When added to cosmetics and personal care products, the Steareth ingredients reduce the interactive forces between molecules of other liquids so that an emulsion is formed. If an ingredient such as a Steareth is not added to some personal care products, the ingredients in the product would separate like some salad dressings.
