STEARETH-3

STEARETH-3 = TRIETHYLENE GLYCOL MONOOCTADECYL ETHER

CAS Number: 4439-32-1    Major Component Structure/Sequence
CAS Number: 9005-00-9    Generic (Family)
EC Number: 500-017-8
MDL number: MFCD00043358
Molecular Formula: C24H50O4

"Steareth-" refers to a PEG (polyethylene glycol) ether of stearyl alcohol or isostearyl alcohol.
The number after "steareth-" indicates the average number of molecular units -CH2-CH2-O-.

The Steareth ingredients (Steareth-3, Steareth-5, Steareth-8, Steareth-14, Steareth-16, Steareth-21, Steareth-25, Steareth-27, Steareth-30, Steareth-40, Steareth-50, Steareth-80, Steareth-100, Steareth-200) are polyethylene glycol ethers of stearic acid.
They are waxy compounds.

The Steareth ingredients are prepared by reacting ethylene oxide with stearyl alcohol where the numerical value in the name corresponds to the average number of units of ethylene oxide.
For example, Steareth-3 is prepared using an average of 3 units of ethylene oxide reacted with stearyl alcohol.

Steareth-3 (CAS No. 9005-00-9) is the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) adopted name for a series of polyethylene glycol ethers of stearyl alcohol.
These cosmetic ingredients conform to the formula where n has an average value that ranges from 2 (as in the case of steareth-2) to 20 (i.e., steareth-20).

Other names for steareth include polyethylene glycol stearyl ether, polyoxyethylene stearyl ether, polyethylene glycol octadecyl ether, polyethylene glycol octadecanol ether, polyoxyethylene octadecyl ether, and stearyl alcohol ethoxylate.

USES and APPLICATIONS of STEARETH-3:
-Cosmetic Uses:
*surfactants
*surfactant - emulsifying

-Surfactant:
Reduces the interfacial tension of cosmetic products and contributes to an even distribution during application.

-In cosmetics and personal care products, Steareth-3 ingredients are used in the formulation of a wide variety of cosmetics and personal care products including makeup, lotions, personal cleanliness products and deodorants, as well as suntan, fragrance, skin, eye and hair care products.

-Surfactant – emulsifying agent
-Emulsifying agent:
Promotes the formation of intimate mixtures between immiscible liquids by modifying the interfacial tension (water and oil)

-Emollient:
*Softens and soothes the skin.
*Helps with skin conditioning.

-Surfactant:
Reduces the surface tension of cosmetics and contributes to the even distribution of the product during use.

-Tensid (Emulsifying) - Emulgator:
Allows the formation of finely divided mixtures of oil and water (emulsions).

-Surfactant (Cleaning):
Detergent substance for cleaning skin, hair and/or teeth.

-Steareth-3 is a PEG-based PROTAC linker that can be used in the synthesis of PROTACs.
