TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE

TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate—universally known across the global polyurethane insulation, polyisocyanurate (PIR) sandwich panel, one-component aerosol montage foam (OCF), spray polyurethane foam (SPF), thermoset resin, and intumescent coating industries under its chemical, regulatory, and commercial synonyms Tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate, Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, Tris(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate, Tris(2-chloropropyl) phosphate, TCPP, TCIPP, TMCP, Fyrol PCF, Levagard PP, Amgard TMCP, Antiblaze 80, and Hostaflam OP 820—is the world's highest-volume liquid chlorinated organophosphate additive flame retardant and viscosity reducer for rigid and flexible polyurethane foams. Supplied by Ataman Kimya as a crystal-clear, colorless to pale yellow low-viscosity liquid (CAS 13674-84-5 / 6145-73-9, EC 237-158-7 / 911-815-4, ester assay >= 99.0% w/w, color <= 50 APHA, acid value <= 0.10 mg KOH/g, moisture <= 0.10% w/w), TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate delivers dual-mode condensed-phase phosphorus (9.46% w/w P) and gas-phase chlorine (32.48% w/w Cl) fire suppression alongside outstanding hydrolytic stability in formulated polyol masterbatches.

At the molecular and synthetic level, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate corresponds to the molecular formula C9H18Cl3O4P and a molecular weight of 327.57 g/mol, manufactured industrially by the catalytic ring-opening addition of three moles of propylene oxide to one mole of phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3). Because propylene oxide undergoes nucleophilic ring-opening predominantly at the sterically unhindered primary carbon and secondarily at the methine carbon, commercial TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is a synergistic positional isomer reaction mass dominated by the branched isomer tris(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate (CAS 13674-84-5, typically 65% to 80% w/w) together with bis(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) (2-chloropropyl) phosphate (CAS 76025-08-6, 15% to 30% w/w) and minor proportions of bis(2-chloropropyl) (2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate and tris(2-chloropropyl) phosphate.

This branched beta-chloroisopropyl architecture (-O-CH(CH3)-CH2Cl) gives TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate a decisive chemical advantage over linear tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP, CAS 115-96-8): the three alpha-methyl substituents sterically shield the central phosphate ester bonds and beta-chlorine atoms from nucleophilic attack by water and tertiary amine polyurethane catalysts (such as DMCHA, PMDETA, and TEDA), enabling B-side polyol systems pre-blended with TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate to remain stable for 6 to 12 months without acid drift or amine catalyst deactivation. Simultaneously, with a dynamic viscosity of only 55 to 68 mPa·s at 25 °C and a pour point of -40 °C, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate acts as an active reactive-system diluent that cuts the high viscosity of aromatic polyester polyols and sucrose/mannich polyether polyols for effortless high-pressure impingement mixing.

When exposed to flame or radiant heat in rigid PUR/PIR thermal insulation boards, spray foams, one-component moisture-cure canister foams, phenolic foams, or epoxy/unsaturated polyester resins, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate decomposes endothermically to generate polyphosphoric acid that dehydrates the polymer into an insulating carbonaceous char shield while releasing hydrogen chloride (HCl) and PO· radicals into the gas phase to quench propagating H· and OH· flame radicals. Partnering with Ataman Kimya for low-acidity, ultra-low-moisture TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate ensures reproducible cream/gel/tack-free foam rise profiles, closed-cell thermal insulation lambda stability, and compliance with DIN 4102 B1/B2, EN 13501-1 Class B-s1,d0, ASTM E84 Class I, and UL 94 fire standards.

WHAT IS TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE?

TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is an industry-standard, non-reactive (additive), liquid chlorinated alkyl phosphate ester flame retardant containing approximately 9.5% w/w elemental phosphorus and 32.5% w/w elemental chlorine. Designed specifically for polyurethane (PUR) and polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam chemistry as well as thermoset and thermoplastic polymers, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is added directly into the polyol "B-side" (or into one-component prepolymer blends, epoxy resins, unsaturated polyesters, or acrylic/EVA dispersions) where it remains homogeneously dissolved within the cured polymer matrix without reacting with hydroxyl or isocyanate functional groups.
In industrial chemical nomenclature, the name TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (or TCIPP) refers to the commercial reaction product of phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3) with three equivalents of propylene oxide (1,2-epoxypropane). Because propylene oxide contains an asymmetric epoxide ring, catalytic alkoxylation generates four positional isomers of formula C9H18Cl3O4P (all having identical elemental composition, molecular weight 327.57 g/mol, and flame-retardant efficiency):

- Isomer 1 (Major constituent, 50% to 85% w/w, typically 65% to 75% w/w): Tris(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate (also named Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, CAS 13674-84-5, EC 237-158-7), containing three branched secondary-ester `-O-CH(CH3)-CH2Cl` chains.
- Isomer 2 (15% to 35% w/w): Bis(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) (2-chloropropyl) phosphate (CAS 76025-08-6), containing two branched `-O-CH(CH3)-CH2Cl` chains and one primary-ester `-O-CH2-CH(Cl)-CH3` chain.
- Isomer 3 (2% to 8% w/w): Bis(2-chloropropyl) (2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate (CAS 76649-15-5).
- Isomer 4 (< 0.5% to 2.0% w/w): Tris(2-chloropropyl) phosphate (CAS 6145-73-9), containing three `-O-CH2-CH(Cl)-CH3` chains.
This controlled multi-isomer composition is a major technological asset: whereas a single pure crystalline isomer would solidify at room temperature, the four-isomer mixture of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate completely suppresses crystallization, remaining a crystal-clear, pumpable liquid down to -40 °C!

HISTORICAL REPLACEMENT OF TCEP AND EVOLUTION OF TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE

During the 1960s and 1970s, the first generation of liquid chloroalkyl phosphate flame retardants for polyurethane foams relied heavily on Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP, CAS 115-96-8, produced from POCl3 and ethylene oxide). However, polyurethane formulators and toxicologists soon identified two severe drawbacks with TCEP: first, the unbranched primary 2-chloroethyl ester linkages of TCEP hydrolyzed rapidly in water-blown polyol masterbatches containing basic tertiary amine catalysts, generating acidic phosphoric diesters and quaternary ammonium chloride salts that poisoned the amine catalysts and caused foam collapse after just a few weeks of drum storage; second, TCEP was classified in the European Union as a Category 1B Reproductive Toxicant (H360FD) and placed on the EU REACH SVHC Authorization List (Annex XIV), effectively phasing out TCEP in Europe and North America.
TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (CAS 13674-84-5) emerged as the direct, drop-in replacement for TCEP across global rigid and flexible polyurethane manufacturing (with European and global consumption exceeding 40,000 to 150,000+ metric tons annually). By replacing ethylene oxide with propylene oxide during synthesis, the resulting methyl-branched structure of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate increased hydrolytic stability in alkaline amine/water polyol blends by more than 10-fold, lowered water solubility from 7.8 g/L (for TCEP) to ~1.1–1.6 g/L (for TCPP), improved compatibility with cyclopentane, n-pentane, and HFO (hydrofluoroolefin) blowing agents, and avoided the Category 1B reproductive toxicity classification of TCEP.

CHEMICAL STRUCTURE, ISOMER DISTRIBUTION, AND SYNERGISTIC FLAME-RETARDANT MECHANISM

The exceptional performance of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate in polyurethane and thermoset fire protection is driven by three structural and thermochemical mechanisms:

Dual Condensed-Phase Phosphorus (9.46% P) and Gas-Phase Chlorine (32.48% Cl) Action:
Polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams have a high internal surface-to-volume cellular geometry that burns rapidly if unprotected. When a foam containing TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is exposed to a flame or radiant heat source (250 to 450 °C), TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate volatilizes and decomposes right within the pyrolysis zone of the polyurethane matrix:
- In the Condensed (Solid) Phase: Thermal dehydrochlorination and ester cleavage of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate generate orthophosphoric acid (H3PO4) and polyphosphoric acid ((HPO3)n). These non-volatile phosphorus acids phosphorylate and dehydrate the polyol/urethane segments of the polymer, promoting crosslinking and forming a continuous, intumescent, glassy carbonaceous char layer over the foam surface. This char barrier insulates the underlying virgin foam from heat feedback, blocks oxygen ingress, and prevents flaming droplets.
- In the Gas (Flame) Phase: Simultaneously, volatilized TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate and its decomposition fragments release hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas and phosphorus monoxide/dioxide radicals (PO·, PO2·) into the combustion zone. These active species scavenge high-energy hydrogen (H·) and hydroxyl (OH·) free radicals that propagate the exothermic branching reactions of combustion (H· + O2 -> OH· + O·):
  PO· + H·  --->  HPO
  HPO + H·  --->  H2 + PO·
  HCl + OH· --->  H2O + Cl·
By starving the flame front of H· and OH· radicals and diluting flammable pyrolysis gases with non-combustible HCl vapor, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate causes immediate self-extinguishment once the ignition source is removed.

Steric Hindrance of the Secondary Propyl Ester Group (-O-CH(CH3)-CH2Cl):
In the dominant tris(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate isomer of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate, each ester oxygen is bonded to a secondary carbon bearing a bulky methyl group. According to Newman's rule of six and Taft steric parameters, this alpha-methyl branching blocks hydroxide ions (OH-), water molecules, and tertiary amine lone pairs from attacking either the phosphoryl center (P=O) or the C-Cl bond via SN2 substitution. As a result, B-side polyol systems formulated with 10 to 25 phr TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate, 1.5 to 3.0 phr water, and tertiary amine/potassium carboxylate catalysts retain stable reactivity (cream time, gel time, and tack-free time) for 6 to 12 months at ambient warehouse temperatures.

Polyol Viscosity Depression and Blowing-Agent Co-Solvency:
Many high-functionality rigid foam polyols—especially aromatic polyester polyols (terephthalic/phthalic diethylene glycol polyesters used in PIR panels, viscosity 3,000 to 15,000 mPa·s at 25 °C) and sucrose/sorbitol/Mannich polyether polyols (viscosity 5,000 to 25,000 mPa·s)—are too viscous to meter and atomize cleanly in high-pressure impingement mixheads. Because TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate has a low viscosity of ~60 mPa·s at 25 °C and strong polar-apolar solvation power, adding 12 to 25 phr TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate slashes the blended B-side viscosity down to 400 to 1,200 mPa·s while simultaneously increasing the solubility of hydrocarbon (c-pentane / i-pentane) and HFO (LBA / 1233zd / 1336mzz) blowing agents in the polyol phase.

INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

Commercial high-purity TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate supplied by Ataman Kimya is produced in dedicated closed-loop batch or continuous reactors via the direct addition of propylene oxide to phosphorus oxychloride:
- Stage 1 (Catalytic Epoxide Ring-Opening Esterification):
Liquid phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3, CAS 10025-87-3) and a Lewis acid catalyst (typically 0.1% to 0.4% w/w titanium tetrachloride TiCl4, zirconium tetrachloride ZrCl4, or aluminum chloride AlCl3) are charged into a dry, nitrogen-inerted jacketed stainless-steel or glass-lined reactor. Anhydrous propylene oxide (PO, CAS 75-56-9, 3.05 to 3.15 moles per mole of POCl3) is metered subsurface at a strictly controlled reaction temperature of 40 to 85 °C under slight positive pressure (1.5 to 3.5 bar) with intensive heat-exchanger cooling (as the epoxide ring-opening reaction is strongly exothermic, delta H ~ -290 kJ/mol):
  POCl3 + 3 CH3-CH(-O-)CH2 (Propylene Oxide)  --[TiCl4 catalyst]-->  [ClCH2CH(CH3)O]3P=O (TCPP)
Unlike alcohol + POCl3 reactions (which liberate 3 moles of corrosive HCl gas), the ring-opening addition of propylene oxide incorporates all three chlorine atoms of POCl3 directly into the three chloropropyl ester arms—achieving nearly 100% atom economy!
- Stage 2 (Post-Reaction Maturation, Alkaline Washing, and Catalyst Removal):
After propylene oxide addition is complete, the reaction mixture is held at 80 to 90 °C for 60 minutes to drive conversion above 99.5%. The crude TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is then transferred to a washing vessel and agitated at 65 to 75 °C with a 1% to 3% w/w aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) solution to hydrolyze and precipitate the titanium/aluminum catalyst and neutralize any trace acidic mono-/di-esters. Following phase separation of the lower organic TCPP layer (density ~1.29 g/cm3), the ester is washed repeatedly with hot deionized water at 70 °C until neutral and chloride-free.
- Stage 3 (Vacuum Dehydration, Volatile Stripping, and Polishing Filtration):
The washed TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is heated under high vacuum (5 to 20 mbar at 100 to 130 °C) with dry nitrogen sparging to strip out residual water (down to <= 0.05%–0.10% w/w), unreacted propylene oxide (< 5 ppm), propylene chlorohydrin, and volatile bis(chloropropyl) ether (< 250 ppm). Final filtration through activated earth and 1-micron cartridge filters yields crystal-clear Polyurethane-Grade TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (yield >= 98%, assay >= 99.0%, acid value <= 0.05–0.10 mg KOH/g, color <= 30–50 APHA).

WHY EACH IMPORTANT PROPERTY OF TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE MATTERS IN PRACTICE

Ultra-Low Water Content (<= 0.10% w/w, Typically 0.03%–0.06% w/w):
In polyurethane chemistry, every 1 part by weight of water reacts with ~15 parts of polymeric MDI (PMDI) to generate carbon dioxide (CO2) gas and polyurea hard segments. If a flame retardant contains uncontrolled moisture, it alters the foam density, consumes expensive isocyanate, and ruins dimensional stability in closed-cell PIR/PUR panels or causes premature curing/pressurization inside One-Component Foam (OCF) aerosol cans. Ataman Kimya's <= 0.10% w/w Karl Fischer moisture specification guarantees exact stoichiometric control.

Ultra-Low Acid Value (<= 0.05 to 0.10 mg KOH/g) and Hydrolytic Resistance:
Rigid and spray polyurethane B-side masterbatches rely on tertiary amine catalysts (DMCHA, PMDETA, BDMAEE) and alkali-metal trimerization catalysts (potassium octoate, potassium acetate) to balance the blowing, gelling, and PIR ring-trimmerization reactions. Acidic impurities neutralize these basic catalysts, lengthening cream and gel times during drum storage. The low initial acid value (<= 0.05–0.10 mg KOH/g) and sterically hindered isopropyl structure of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate prevent catalyst drift over 6 to 12 months of storage.

Low Dynamic Viscosity (55 to 68 mPa·s at 25 °C) vs. High-Viscosity Polyols:
High-functionality sucrose/glycerine polyether polyols and aromatic terephthalic polyester polyols used in PIR boards have viscosities of 4,000 to 20,000 mPa·s. Incorporating 12 to 25 phr of low-viscosity TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate cuts the B-side viscosity by 50% to 75%, ensuring laminar pumping, uniform nucleation, and fine, closed-cell foam morphology (reducing thermal conductivity lambda to 0.019–0.022 W/m·K).

Low Volatility (< 0.001 Pa at 25 °C) and Non-Plasticizing Matrix Retention in Rigid Foams:
Because TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate has a compact, branched structure and low vapor pressure, it remains locked inside the crosslinked polyurethane/polyisocyanurate network for decades without migrating out or severely depressing the compressive strength of rigid insulation panels (unlike linear plasticizers that soften the foam).

HOW DOES TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE WORK AT THE MOLECULAR AND PROCESS LEVEL?

Synergistic Condensed-Phase Char Formation and Gas-Phase Radical Quenching:
When a polyurethane or polyisocyanurate foam containing TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is exposed to fire, thermal cleavage of the C-O and C-Cl bonds begins around 230 to 260 °C—precisely matching the onset of urethane bond dissociation. In the condensed phase, the 9.46% phosphorus fraction forms non-volatile polyphosphoric acid that catalyzes the dehydration and aromatization of the polymer into a cohesive, heat-shielding carbonaceous char layer (which is especially powerful in high-index PIR foams where isocyanurate rings synergize with phosphorus char). Simultaneously, the 32.48% chlorine fraction releases HCl gas and volatile phosphorus-chlorine species into the gas phase, cooling the flame and quenching H· and OH· chain-branching radicals.

Blowing-Agent Compatibilization and Emulsion Stabilization in B-Side Polyol Blends:
In modern pentane-blown (n-pentane, isopentane, cyclopentane) and HFO-blown (trans-1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene HFO-1233zd(E)) rigid PUR/PIR panel formulations, non-polar hydrocarbon blowing agents have limited solubility in polar polyester/polyether polyols and tend to phase-separate in storage tanks. Because TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate possesses both a polar phosphoryl group (P=O) and three lipophilic chloropropyl arms (log Kow ~ 2.68), adding 15 to 25 phr TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate acts as an amphiphilic co-solvent bridge that substantially increases pentane and HFO phase stability in the polyol masterbatch.

Prepolymer Plasticization and Valve-Blocking Prevention in One-Component Aerosol Foams (OCF):
In moisture-curing One-Component Polyurethane Montage Foams (OCF aerosol cans used around window and door frames), an NCO-terminated prepolymer is formed inside the pressurized canister by reacting excess PMDI with polyether polyols in the presence of 15% to 25% w/w anhydrous TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate and liquefied propane/butane/DME propellant gas. Because TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate contains zero active hydroxyl groups and <= 0.05%–0.10% water, it does not react with free NCO groups, drastically lowers the viscosity of the NCO-prepolymer inside the can so the foam extrudes smoothly through gun/straw valves at temperatures down to -5 °C, and enables the cured foam to pass DIN 4102 B2 / B1 building fire tests.

WHAT PROBLEMS CAN TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE HELP SOLVE?

Achieving Strict Building Fire Classifications (DIN 4102 B1/B2, EN 13501-1 Class B, ASTM E84 Class I) at Low Cost: Incorporating 10 to 25 phr TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate into rigid PUR and PIR insulation foams enables panel and spray-foam manufacturers to pass regulatory small-burner (EN ISO 11925-2), Single Burning Item (SBI, EN 13823), and Steiner Tunnel (ASTM E84) fire tests economically.

Solving B-Side Polyol Shelf-Life Instability and Amine Catalyst Poisoning: Replacing linear TCEP or high-acidity flame retardants with low-acid TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate eliminates reactivity drift, cream/gel time retardation, and corrosion in formulated polyol drums stored for 6 to 12 months.

Reducing Excessive Polyol Viscosity and Poor Mixhead Impingement in PIR / Spray Foams: Adding 15 to 25 phr TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate cuts the high viscosity of aromatic polyester and sucrose polyether polyols by more than half, eliminating striation defects, coarse voids, and high pumping pressures in continuous laminators and mobile spray rigs.

Preventing Pentane Blowing-Agent Phase Separation in Polyol Blends: Acting as a mutual co-solvent, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate keeps cyclopentane/isopentane emulsified homogeneously in polar polyester/polyether polyols, preventing hazardous pentane layering in polyol day tanks.

Eliminating Scorching (Core Discoloration) in Low-Density Flexible Polyurethane Foams: In slabstock and molded flexible PU foams where high exotherms (150 to 175 °C) occur in the bun center, high-purity, low-acidity TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (often paired with scorch-inhibitor antioxidants) provides FMVSS 302 / CAL 117 fire retardancy with minimal core yellowing.

Solving Brittle Film Cracking and Flammability in Thermoset Resins, Coatings, and Adhesives: In epoxy potting compounds, unsaturated polyester laminates, phenolic foams, and acrylic/EVA intumescent textile back-coatings, 5% to 15% w/w TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate imparts permanent flame retardancy while toughening and lowering the viscosity of the uncured resin.

BENEFITS FOR THE MANUFACTURER AND END USER

- Highest Cost-Performance Efficiency Among Liquid Flame Retardants: Combining 9.46% phosphorus and 32.48% chlorine in a single 99%+ active liquid ester, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate delivers unmatched flame-retardant efficiency per kilogram compared to solid mineral fillers or expensive specialty phosphates.
- Zero Reactivity with Isocyanates (PMDI / TDI): Because pure TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate has a hydroxyl value near 0 mg KOH/g and moisture <= 0.10%, it can be blended into either the polyol B-side, the isocyanate A-side, or 1K NCO-prepolymers without consuming isocyanate index.

- Non-Regulated Transport Logistics: Classified as Non-Hazardous Cargo (not dangerous goods) under ADR, RID, IMDG, and IATA transport regulations, simplifying global warehouse storage and shipping.

APPLICATIONS OF TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE

TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is utilized across a broad spectrum of polyurethane, thermoset, coating, adhesive, and elastomer applications:
TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is utilized as the primary additive flame retardant and polyol viscosity depressant in Rigid Polyurethane (PUR) and Polyisocyanurate (PIR) Thermal Insulation Foams (continuous metal-faced sandwich panels, flexible-faced roofing/wall insulation boards, discontinuous cold-room panels, refrigerated truck bodies, and district-heating pipe-in-pipe insulation).
TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is used for prepolymer viscosity reduction and DIN 4102 B1/B2 / EN 13501-1 fire compliance in One-Component Moisture-Curing Polyurethane Aerosol Montage Foams (OCF window/door installation canister foams) and Two-Component Closed-Cell / Open-Cell Spray Polyurethane Foams (SPF).
Also TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is utilized in the preparation of Flexible Slabstock, Molded, and Rebonded Polyurethane Foams for automotive seating, headliners, acoustic sound-absorption panels, packaging foams, and commercial upholstery requiring FMVSS 302 or UL 94 HF-1 flame retardancy.

For Phenolic Insulation Foams, Epoxy Resins (electrical potting, encapsulants, and composite laminates), Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR), and Vinyl Ester Resins, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is used as a miscible liquid phosphorus-chlorine flame retardant and reactive-mix diluent.
In Intumescent Fire-Retardant Coatings, Waterborne Acrylic / EVA Textile Back-Coatings, Carpet Backing Adhesives, and Construction Sealants, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is employed to provide self-extinguishing char formation and plasticizing flexibility.
Furthermore, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is applied in Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Plastisols, Chlorinated Rubber Coatings, Nitrile/Neoprene Elastomer Compounds, and Thermoplastic Polyurethanes (TPU) as a secondary flame-retardant plasticizer.
Additionally, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is utilized as a base component in Blended Oligomeric Flame-Retardant Packages (paired with TEP Triethyl Phosphate, Deep/DMMP, or Brominated Polyols) for ultra-low-smoke EN 13501-1 Class B-s1,d0 architectural insulation systems.

USE OF TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE IN RIGID PUR/PIR INSULATION PANELS, SPRAY FOAMS (SPF) AND 1K AEROSOL FOAMS (OCF)

- Continuous Laminated Rigid PIR and PUR Sandwich Panels with TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate: In high-index Polyisocyanurate (PIR, Iso Index 200 to 350) and Rigid Polyurethane (PUR, Iso Index 105 to 130) continuous boardstock and metal-faced sandwich panels blown with cyclopentane/isopentane or HFO-1233zd(E), TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is dosed into the aromatic polyester / polyether polyol B-side at 12 to 28 phr (parts per hundred polyol, corresponding to ~5% to 12% w/w on total cured foam). In PIR systems, the 9.46% phosphorus and 32.48% chlorine of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate work in powerful synergy with the thermally stable isocyanurate rings (and often 3 to 8 phr Triethyl Phosphate TEP) to form a cohesive intumescent char skin during the EN 13823 Single Burning Item (SBI) test, achieving Euroclass B-s1,d0 or B-s2,d0 classification while keeping the closed-cell thermal conductivity (lambda) at 0.019 to 0.022 W/(m·K).

- Two-Component Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) and Appliance Pour-in-Place Foams with TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate: In 1:1 volumetric high-pressure Spray Polyurethane Foam systems (where B-side and A-side polymeric MDI must have closely matched viscosities of ~200 to 600 mPa·s at 25 °C for impingement mixing), TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is incorporated at 15% to 25% w/w of the B-side polyol blend to simultaneously reduce the viscosity of high-functionality Mannich/sucrose polyols, solubilize HFO/HFC/water blowing agents, and meet DIN 4102 B2 or ASTM E84 Class I fire codes.
- One-Component Moisture-Cure Aerosol Montage Foams (OCF) with TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate: In 750 mL pressurized OCF cans, anhydrous TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (moisture strictly <= 0.05%–0.10% w/w) is charged at 15% to 25% w/w of the total canister contents alongside polypropylene glycol (PPG) diols/triols, chlorinated paraffin or polymeric plasticizer, silicone cell stabilizer, DMDEE catalyst, polymeric MDI, and propane/isobutane/dimethyl ether propellant gas. TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate remains completely inert toward the excess NCO groups during 12 to 18 months of shelf storage inside the metal can and provides self-extinguishing B2/B1 fire performance upon extrusion.

USE OF TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE IN FLEXIBLE PU FOAMS, PHENOLIC FOAMS, EPOXY / UPR RESINS AND COATINGS

- Flexible Polyurethane Foams (Automotive & Acoustic) and Rebonded Foams with TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate: In polyether and polyester flexible slabstock or molded foams (density 18 to 45 kg/m3), adding 6 to 15 phr TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate enables automotive seating, headliners, and engine-bay acoustic foams to pass FMVSS 302 (horizontal burn rate < 102 mm/min) and UL 94 HF-1. In rebonded carpet underlay and gym mats, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is blended directly into the MDI prepolymer binder at 5% to 12% w/w.
- Phenolic Insulation Foams, Epoxy Resins, Unsaturated Polyesters (UPR), and Intumescent Coatings with TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate: In acid-cured resol phenolic insulation foams, 5 to 12 phr TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate suppresses punking and enhances smoke/flame performance. In bisphenol-A/F epoxy resins and orthophthalic/isophthalic UPR laminates, 8 to 20 phr TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (often combined with Aluminum Trihydrate ATH or Ammonium Polyphosphate APP) lowers resin viscosity for fiber wetting and provides UL 94 V-0 self-extinguishment.

FORMULATION AND PROCESS CONSIDERATIONS WHEN USING TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE

Compensating for the Mild Plasticizing Effect of High TCPP Loadings on Foam Compressive Strength (Tg):
Because TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is a non-reactive liquid ester that remains dissolved in the polyurethane polymer struts, high loadings (> 20 to 25 phr on polyol) slightly lower the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polymer matrix. To maintain high compressive strength (>= 120 to 150 kPa at 10% deformation) and dimensional stability at -25 °C / +70 °C when formulating high-TCPP B1/Class B foams, formulators either increase the average hydroxyl functionality of the polyol blend (using sucrose/sorbitol or aromatic Mannich polyols with OHv 400 to 500 mg KOH/g), slightly raise the isocyanate index (e.g., from 110 to 120 in PUR, or 250 to 300 in PIR), or replace 25% to 35% of the TCPP with a reactive brominated/phosphorus diol or low-molecular-weight Triethyl Phosphate (TEP).
Controlling Moisture and Acidity in Pre-Blended B-Side Polyol Systems and OCF Cans:
When storing formulated B-side polyol blends containing water (1.5 to 3.5 phr), tertiary amines, and TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate in warm climates (> 35 °C) for more than 6 months, always specify Low-Acid Grade TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (acid value <= 0.05 mg KOH/g) and consider including 0.1% to 0.3% w/w of an acid scavenger (such as a monomeric epoxide or carbodiimide stabilizer) to guarantee zero amine-catalyst drift. For 1K OCF aerosol foams, verify that incoming TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate has Karl Fischer moisture <= 0.05% to 0.08% w/w so it does not consume NCO groups or build excess CO2 pressure inside the aerosol tinplate can.
Preventing Scorching in Low-Density Water-Blown Flexible Slabstock Foams:
In low-density (< 22 kg/m3), high-water (> 4.2 phr water) flexible slabstock buns where internal curing exotherms exceed 160 °C, trace HCl elimination from any chlorinated flame retardant can promote thermo-oxidative core scorching (yellow/brown discoloration). Always use high-purity, low-acidity TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate from Ataman Kimya paired with a scorch-inhibiting antioxidant package (such as hindered phenol + diphenylamine + polymeric phosphite at 0.3 to 0.6 phr).

TYPICAL USE LEVELS AND INITIAL FORMULATION APPROACHES FOR TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE

Typical commercial incorporation levels for TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate depend on the polymer type, isocyanate index, blowing agent, and target fire classification:
- Rigid Polyurethane (PUR) Insulation Foams (DIN 4102 B2 / EN ISO 11925-2 Class E): TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is incorporated at 10.0 to 18.0 phr (parts per hundred polyol, typically 12.0 to 15.0 phr, corresponding to ~5.0% to 7.5% w/w on total cured foam).
- Rigid Polyisocyanurate (PIR) Continuous Laminated Panels (DIN 4102 B1 / EN 13501-1 Class B-s1,d0 / ASTM E84 Class I): TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is dosed at 15.0 to 30.0 phr on aromatic polyester polyol (often 18.0 to 24.0 phr TCPP paired with 4.0 to 8.0 phr Triethyl Phosphate TEP, corresponding to ~6.0% to 10.0% w/w on total PIR foam).
- Two-Component Closed-Cell Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF, 1:1 Volume Ratio): TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is added at 15.0% to 25.0% w/w of the total B-side polyol component (18.0 to 32.0 phr on polyol).
- One-Component Moisture-Cure Polyurethane Aerosol Montage Foams (OCF Canisters): TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (moisture <= 0.08% w/w) is incorporated at 14.0% to 24.0% w/w of total canister fill weight.
- Flexible Polyurethane Slabstock and Automotive Molded Foams (FMVSS 302 / UL 94 HF-1): TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is dosed at 6.0 to 15.0 phr on polyether polyol (typically 8.0 to 12.0 phr).
- Phenolic Resol Insulation Foams: TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is added at 5.0 to 12.0 phr on phenolic resol resin.
- Epoxy Resins, Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR), and Intumescent Coatings/Adhesives: TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is incorporated at 8.0 to 20.0 phr (5.0% to 15.0% w/w) on resin solids, alone or in synergy with ATH or Ammonium Polyphosphate (APP).

COMPATIBILITY AND INCOMPATIBILITY OF TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE

- Synergistic Co-Additives and Compatible Systems:
  - Polyols, Isocyanates & Blowing Agents: Fully miscible with aromatic polyester polyols, polyether polyols, polymeric MDI (PMDI), TDI, cyclopentane, isopentane, n-pentane, HFC-245fa, HFC-365mfc, HFO-1233zd(E), HFO-1336mzz(Z), methylal, and methyl formate.
  - Synergistic Flame Retardants: Exhibits powerful fire-test synergy with Triethyl Phosphate (TEP, CAS 78-40-0, combining TCPP's char/chlorine action with TEP's high 17% gas-phase phosphorus), Dimethyl Propane Phosphonate (DMPP) / Dimethyl Methylphosphonate (DMMP), reactive brominated polyether diols (Ixol B251 / PHT-4-Diol), expandable graphite, melamine cyanurate, Ammonium Polyphosphate (APP), Aluminum Trihydrate (ATH), and Antimony Trioxide (Sb2O3).
- Chemical and Material Incompatibilities:
  - Strong Alkalies and Strong Oxidizing Agents at High Temperatures: While TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is stable at ambient temperatures in tertiary amine polyol blends, contact with concentrated caustic alkalies (NaOH, KOH) above 80 to 100 °C triggers dehydrochlorination (splitting off HCl to form allyl/propenyl phosphate esters) and alkaline ester saponification. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents (concentrated nitric acid, perchlorates, peroxides) and strong alkali-metal reducing hydrides.
  - Incompatible Plastics and Elastomers for Pure Undiluted TCPP: Undiluted liquid TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is a strong polar solvent/plasticizer that softens, swells, or dissolves unplasticized PVC, polystyrene (PS, EPS), ABS, polycarbonate (PC), PMMA acrylic, and natural rubber or SBR gaskets. Always use stainless steel (304/316L), carbon steel, baked phenolic-epoxy lined steel, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), PTFE (Teflon), Viton (FKM), or butyl rubber (IIR) seals and hoses when storing or pumping pure TCPP.

SIMILAR PRODUCTS AND ALTERNATIVES TO TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE

Polyurethane system houses and polymer compounders frequently compare TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate against four related flame retardants.

TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE AND TCEP (TRIS(2-CHLOROETHYL) PHOSPHATE, CAS 115-96-8)

TCEP (C6H12Cl3O4P, MW 285.49 g/mol, 10.8% P, 37.3% Cl) is the unbranched ethyl homologue of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate. Because TCEP lacks the protective methyl branch of TCPP, TCEP hydrolyzes rapidly in water/amine B-side polyol blends (poisoning amine catalysts) and is classified under EU CLP as Reprotoxic Category 1B (H360FD) and listed on the EU REACH Annex XIV Authorization List (SVHC). TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is the globally established, hydrolytically stable replacement for TCEP.

TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE AND TDCPP / TDCP (TRIS(1,3-DICHLORO-2-PROPYL) PHOSPHATE, CAS 13674-87-8)

TDCPP (C9H15Cl6O4P, MW 430.90 g/mol, 7.2% P, 49.4% Cl, produced from POCl3 and epichlorohydrin) contains six chlorine atoms per molecule and has a much higher molecular weight, lower volatility, and 30-fold higher viscosity (~1,800 mPa·s at 25 °C) than TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (~61 mPa·s). While TDCPP is less volatile in automotive fogging tests, TDCPP is far more expensive, does not reduce polyol viscosity effectively, and carries stricter regulatory hazard classifications (Carcinogen Category 2 H351), making TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate the preferred choice for rigid PIR/PUR insulation, OCF cans, and general PU foams.

TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE AND TEP (TRIETHYL PHOSPHATE, CAS 78-40-0)

Triethyl Phosphate (TEP, C6H15O4P, MW 182.15 g/mol, 17.0% P, 0% Cl) is a halogen-free, very low-viscosity (1.6 mPa·s) liquid phosphate with high phosphorus content. However, TEP is relatively volatile, strongly plasticizes rigid foam matrices if used alone at high levels, and lacks gas-phase chlorine radical quenching. In practice, PIR sandwich panel formulators combine 15 to 22 phr TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate with 3 to 6 phr TEP to achieve an optimal balance of low B-side viscosity, high compressive strength, and Euroclass B-s1,d0 fire performance.

TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE AND TBEP (TRIS(2-BUTOXYETHYL) PHOSPHATE, CAS 78-51-3)

TBEP (C18H39O7P, MW 398.47 g/mol, 7.78% P, 0% Cl) is an amphiphilic halogen-free butoxyethyl phosphate designed primarily as a leveling coalescent in acrylic floor polishes and a -55 °C low-temperature plasticizer in NBR/CR rubber. By contrast, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (9.46% P + 32.48% Cl) is engineered specifically for high-efficiency flame retardancy in polyurethane foams and thermoset resins where TBEP's strong plasticizing effect would soften the rigid foam structure.

FIRST AID MEASURES AND SAFETY INFORMATION FOR TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE

- Toxicological, Regulatory, and Workplace Safety Profile:
  - Acute Oral Toxicity (GHS / CLP): Rat Acute Oral LD50 ranges from 632 to 2,000 mg/kg bw across sex/strain studies; under EU CLP (Regulation EC 1272/2008) and REACH registration dossiers, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is classified as Acute Toxicity Category 4 (Oral) — H302: Harmful if swallowed (Warning pictogram GHS07). Rabbit Acute Dermal LD50 > 2,000 mg/kg bw (not classified for acute dermal toxicity); Rat 4-Hour Aerosol Inhalation LC50 > 4.6 to 7.0 mg/L (not classified for acute inhalation toxicity at ambient temperatures).
  - Skin, Eye, and Sensitization Profile: Non-corrosive and minimally irritating to skin and eyes in OECD 404/405 rabbit studies; non-sensitizing in guinea pig and LLNA skin sensitization assays (OECD 429).
  - Neurological Profile: Unlike tri-ortho-cresyl phosphate (TOCP), TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate does NOT cause delayed neurotoxicity (OPIDN) in hen tests.
  - Regulatory Evaluations (EU REACH / ECHA / TSCA): TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is fully registered under EU REACH (EC 911-815-4 / 237-158-7) and listed as Active on the US TSCA Inventory. Note that in the European Union (Directive 2014/79/EU amending Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC) and several US states, TCPP (alongside TCEP and TDCPP) is restricted to <= 5 mg/kg in children's toys intended for children under 36 months or placed in the mouth, and is undergoing ongoing ECHA/EPA risk-management evaluations regarding consumer flexible furniture foam—whereas its core industrial application in construction thermal insulation panels (PUR/PIR/SPF/OCF) remains the primary global market.

- Ecotoxicology and Environmental Fate:
  - Fish 96-h LC50 (Pimephales promelas / Brachydanio rerio): 51.0 to 56.0 mg/L.
  - Daphnia magna 48-h EC50: 65.0 to 131.0 mg/L.
  - Green Algae 72-h ErC50 (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata): 45.0 to 82.0 mg/L (Chronic NOEC = 13.0 mg/L).
  - Biodegradability & Bioaccumulation: Not readily biodegradable in 28-day OECD 301 screening tests (though inherently degradable in prolonged acclimated systems); low Bioconcentration Factor in fish (BCF = 0.8 to 4.6 in Cyprinus carpio per OECD 305C, confirming low bioaccumulation). Do not discharge undiluted TCPP or washings into surface drains or waterways.

- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) & Fire-Fighting Measures:
  - Wear chemical splash goggles (EN 166), impervious nitrile rubber (>= 0.4 mm), butyl rubber, or Viton gloves (EN 374), and protective work clothing. Ensure good general and local exhaust ventilation, especially where hot polyurethane buns cure or where spray foam aerosols are generated (use Type A-P2 / ABEK-P2 respirator if mists/vapors are formed).
  - Fire-Fighting: TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is a flame retardant and does not ignite easily (flash point ~220 °C), but in a surrounding industrial fire above 240 °C it decomposes to evolve toxic fumes of hydrogen chloride (HCl), phosphorus oxides (PxOy), phosgene traces, and carbon monoxide; firefighters must wear positive-pressure Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and extinguish with water fog, foam, dry chemical, or CO2.

- First Aid Measures:
  - Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Call a poison control center or physician if swallowed.
  - Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of lukewarm running water for at least 15 minutes while holding eyelids open; seek medical attention if irritation persists.
  - Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly with soap and water.
  - Inhalation: Move the affected person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing; seek medical attention if respiratory irritation or dizziness occurs.

WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WHEN PURCHASING TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE?

When purchasing TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate for polyurethane polyol masterbatches and One-Component Aerosol Foams (OCF), verify that the Certificate of Analysis guarantees Karl Fischer Water Content <= 0.05% to 0.10% w/w and Acid Value <= 0.05 to 0.10 mg KOH/g, because excess moisture consumes expensive PMDI/TDI isocyanate and excess acidity poisons tertiary amine and potassium trimerization catalysts.
Buyers sourcing TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate for low-density flexible slabstock foams or light-colored coatings should check the APHA Color (<= 30 to 50 APHA) and low volatile chlorohydrin/ether impurity levels (< 250 ppm) of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate to prevent internal bun scorching (yellowing) and odor.
For continuous PIR/PUR sandwich panel plants using cyclopentane or HFO blowing agents, confirm the GC isomer purity (>= 99.0% total TCPP isomers) and 25 °C viscosity (55 to 68 mPa·s) of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate to ensure reproducible mixhead impingement pressure and pentane emulsion stability.
Ensure that plant transfer hoses, pump seals, and IBC valves contacting pure TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate are constructed of Viton (FKM), PTFE, EPDM/butyl, HDPE, or stainless steel—never unplasticized PVC, ABS, or polystyrene.
Finally, verify that the supplier provides full EU REACH registration coverage (EC 911-815-4 / 237-158-7), GHS/CLP-compliant SDS documentation, and reliable packaging in 250 kg drums, 1,250 kg IBC totes, or 25 MT ISO tanks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE

What is the exact chemical composition and isomer profile of commercial TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate?
Commercial TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (C9H18Cl3O4P, MW 327.57 g/mol, 9.46% P, 32.48% Cl) is the reaction product of phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3) and propylene oxide. It consists of four positional isomers sharing the exact same molecular formula and flame-retardant efficiency: predominantly Tris(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate (CAS 13674-84-5, 50% to 85% w/w), along with Bis(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) (2-chloropropyl) phosphate (CAS 76025-08-6, 15% to 35% w/w) and minor amounts of the remaining two positional isomers (CAS 76649-15-5 and CAS 6145-73-9). Under EU REACH, this isomer mixture is registered under EC 911-815-4 and EC 237-158-7.

Why did the global polyurethane industry switch from TCEP (CAS 115-96-8) to TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (CAS 13674-84-5)?
Linear TCEP (Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate) hydrolyzes rapidly in water/amine-containing B-side polyol blends—deactivating amine catalysts and causing foam reactivity drift—and was classified in the EU as a Category 1B Reproductive Toxicant (H360FD) and placed on the REACH SVHC Authorization List. By contrast, the methyl-branched structure of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate sterically blocks alkaline hydrolysis in polyol masterbatches for 6 to 12+ months and avoids Category 1B reproductive toxicity classification.

Does TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate react with isocyanates (PMDI or TDI) during polyurethane foaming?
No. Pure TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is a non-reactive (additive) triester with zero hydroxyl (-OH) or amine (-NH) groups and an ultra-low moisture content (<= 0.05% to 0.10% w/w). Therefore, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate does not consume isocyanate index and can even be blended directly into NCO-terminated prepolymers inside One-Component Aerosol Montage Foam (OCF) cans.

How does TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate extinguish flames in Rigid PUR and PIR insulation foams?
TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate operates via a dual condensed-phase and gas-phase mechanism: in the condensed phase, its 9.46% phosphorus decomposes into polyphosphoric acid that dehydrates the polyurethane/polyisocyanurate polymer into a protective carbonaceous char layer; simultaneously, in the gas phase, its 32.48% chlorine releases HCl gas and PO· radicals that quench high-energy H· and OH· radicals in the flame front.

How much TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate is required to pass DIN 4102 B2 or EN 13501-1 Class B fire tests in rigid foams?
In standard Rigid Polyurethane (PUR) foams (Iso Index 110–125), 12 to 18 phr TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate on polyol is typically used to pass DIN 4102 B2 / EN ISO 11925-2. In high-index Polyisocyanurate (PIR) sandwich panels (Iso Index 220–320), 18 to 26 phr TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (often combined with 4 to 6 phr Triethyl Phosphate TEP) enables the panel to achieve DIN 4102 B1 and EN 13501-1 Euroclass B-s1,d0 or B-s2,d0.

Why are drum weight and IBC capacity higher for TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate than for standard polyols?
Because TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate contains 32.5% chlorine and 9.5% phosphorus, it has a high liquid density of 1.290 g/cm3 at 25 °C (compared to ~1.01–1.10 g/cm3 for polyether polyols). Consequently, a standard 200-liter steel drum holds 250 kg net of TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate, and a 1,000-liter IBC tote holds 1,250 kg net.

Does TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate crystallize or freeze in winter storage?
No. Thanks to its multi-isomer branched structure, TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate has a pour/solidification point of -40.0 to -42.0 °C (-40 °F). Even at sub-zero winter temperatures, it never precipitates solid crystals, only increasing gradually in viscosity until warmed back to 15–25 °C.

Why is low Acid Value (<= 0.05–0.10 mg KOH/g) critical when purchasing TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate?
High acidity in an off-spec chlorinated phosphate ester neutralizes tertiary amine catalysts (DMCHA, PMDETA, TEDA) and potassium carboxylate PIR catalysts in formulated B-side polyol drums, causing slower cream/gel times, poor curing, and increased core scorching in flexible slabstock foams.

Which gaskets, hoses, and plastics are compatible with undiluted TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate?
Use Viton (FKM), PTFE (Teflon), butyl rubber (IIR), EPDM, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), or stainless/carbon steel for pure TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate. Avoid unplasticized PVC, polystyrene (PS), ABS, polycarbonate (PC), and natural/SBR rubber, which will swell or soften on contact with pure TCPP.

Is TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate regulated as dangerous goods for road or sea transport?
No. TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (CAS 13674-84-5) has a high flash point (~220 °C open cup) and is NOT classified as dangerous goods or a marine pollutant under ADR, RID, IMDG, or IATA transport regulations.

TCPP TRIS(CHLOROPROPYL) PHOSPHATE – TECHNICAL SUMMARY

TCPP Tris(Chloropropyl) Phosphate (Tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate, Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, TCIPP, Fyrol PCF, Levagard PP, CAS 13674-84-5, EC 237-158-7 / 911-815-4, C9H18Cl3O4P, MW 327.57 g/mol) is the global benchmark liquid chlorinated organophosphate additive flame retardant and polyol viscosity depressant for the polyurethane and thermoset polymer industries.
