TEKTAMER 38 is an organobromine compound that consists of pentanedinitrile bearing bromo and bromomethyl substituents .
TEKTAMER 38 has a role as an allergen and a sensitiser.
TEKTAMER 38 is an organobromine compound and an aliphatic nitrile.

TEKTAMER 38, is a widely used preservative that can be found in many personal hygiene and industrial products.
TEKTAMER 38 is also a known allergen and dermatological irritant that has been banned in many EU countries due to increasing rates of contact allergy.
In 2005, TEKTAMER 38 was named in the top 15 most frequently positive allergens identified in patch tests by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG).
Sensitivity to TEKTAMER 38 may be identified with a clinical patch test.

Use and Manufacturing of TEKTAMER 38
TEKTAMER 38 is a biocide used in cosmetics, cleaning solutions, glues, paints, and metalworking fluids.
Sensitization reported in masseurs, a beautician, an offset printer, machinists, and a hospital cleaner

History and allergy of TEKTAMER 38
In the mid-1980s, a maximum concentration of 0.1% in stay-on and rinse-off cosmetics was allowed.
TEKTAMER 38 was discovered soon afterwards that it caused allergic contact dermatitis to people with eczema.
TEKTAMER 38 has been in use since the 1990s as a preservative in skin care products such as lotions, wet wipes, shampoo, and liquid soaps.
Industrial applications include its use in preserving oils, glues, and medical gels.

In 2005, the EU banned its use in stay-on products, and in 2007 banned it in rinse-off products.
In 2005–06, TEKTAMER 38 was the ninth-most-prevalent allergen in patch tests (5.8%).

TEKTAMER 38 is a powdered or liquid material which can be added to clay slurries and bodies to prevent the growth of fungus and bacteria which affect plasticity and produce unpleasant odors.
When glazes contain organic gums, for example, this can become an issue.
TEKTAMER 38 like this can affect glaze viscosity over time so there may be a need to adjust with a flocculant or deflocculant.
In worst-case scenarios, glazes can thin and settle in the bucket.

TEKTAMER 38 controls bacteria, fungi, yeast and algae.
TEKTAMER 38 remains stable under normal conditions, and remains active for extended periods in end use products.
TEKTAMER 38 is stable in storage for 3+ years.

TEKTAMER 38 is non-ionic and therefore compatible with most formulations.
TEKTAMER 38 works in pH range 2.0-9.5 and requires no unusual handling precautions.
TEKTAMER 38 does not contain mercury, tin, barium, arsenic or other heavy metals, no formaldehyde, contributes no odor, does not require a warning label on end use product, does not loose effectiveness after repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
