TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant is designed for applications requiring high water solubility, strong emulsification, wetting, detergency, dispersion and stabilization.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant belongs to the alkylphenol ethoxylate family and combines a hydrophobic nonylphenyl group with a long hydrophilic polyoxyethylene chain.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant is a nonionic surfactant.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant unlike anionic or cationic surfactants, the hydrophilic portion of the molecule does not depend on a permanent ionic charge.
Instead, water compatibility is produced by the numerous ether oxygen atoms within the polyoxyethylene chain.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant oxygen atoms interact strongly with water through hydrogen bonding.
The absence of a formal ionic charge gives TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant useful compatibility with many ionic formulation ingredients.
Dow specifically identifies the product as compatible with quaternary ammonium compounds.

This molecular balance gives TERGITOL NP-30 a high hydrophilic-lipophilic balance and makes it particularly effective in oil-in-water emulsification and aqueous formulation systems.
TERGITOL NP-30 is highly soluble in water and maintains useful surface activity at elevated temperatures.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant relatively high ethoxylation level distinguishes it from lower-EO nonylphenol ethoxylates, which have greater oil solubility and lower hydrophilicity.

The approximately 30-mole ethoxylate chain strongly shifts the surfactant toward the aqueous phase.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant is particularly suitable as an emulsifier, stabilizer and dispersing aid in systems where water is the principal continuous phase.
TERGITOL NP-30 can reduce interfacial tension between water and hydrophobic materials.

This property facilitates the formation and stabilization of emulsions and can improve the incorporation of oils, resins and other poorly water-compatible ingredients into aqueous formulations.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant also lowers the surface tension of water.
At 1% active concentration and 25 °C, TERGITOL NP-30 provides a surface tension of approximately 46 dynes/cm.

Lowering surface tension improves wetting of solid substrates and allows aqueous formulations to spread more efficiently across surfaces that would otherwise be difficult to wet.
TERGITOL NP-30 also forms micelles above its critical micelle concentration.
The reported critical micelle concentration is approximately 157 ppm at 25 °C.

Above this concentration, surfactant molecules organize into micellar structures with hydrophobic regions directed toward the interior and hydrophilic ethoxylate chains interacting with water.
This behavior contributes to detergency, solubilization and emulsification.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant or other organic material can associate with the non-polar regions of the micelle while the ethoxylated chains maintain compatibility with the surrounding water.

TERGITOL NP-30 therefore provides a combination of wetting, detergency, emulsification and solubilization rather than performing only one surface-active function.
This can be important in formulations containing cationic materials where conventional anionic surfactants could form insoluble complexes or lose performance.
TERGITOL NP-30 can also be used together with other nonionic surfactants and, depending on formulation conditions, with suitable anionic surfactants.

Blending different surfactants allows formulators to adjust HLB, foam profile, detergency, wetting rate and emulsion stability.
The HLB value of TERGITOL NP-30 is approximately 17.1.
This relatively high value reflects its strongly hydrophilic character.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant surfactants generally favor oil-in-water emulsification because they are preferentially soluble in the aqueous phase.
TERGITOL NP-30 is therefore particularly useful where a hydrophobic oil or resin phase must remain dispersed within water.
The long ethoxylate chain also contributes to steric stabilization.

When surfactant molecules adsorb at an interface, the hydrated polyoxyethylene chains extend into the aqueous phase.
These chains can create a hydrated barrier that makes it more difficult for droplets or particles to approach closely enough to aggregate.
This effect complements the reduction in interfacial tension.

TERGITOL NP-30 can consequently contribute both to formation of an emulsion and to its subsequent stability.
The high cloud point is another important feature.
TERGITOL NP-30 has a cloud point of approximately 100 °C in a 1% aqueous solution.

Cloud point describes the temperature at which an aqueous solution of a nonionic ethoxylated surfactant begins to separate into surfactant-rich and water-rich phases.
As temperature increases, hydration of the ethylene oxide groups gradually decreases.
At the cloud point, the surfactant becomes sufficiently less water-soluble for visible cloudiness or phase separation to occur.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant remains water compatible across a relatively broad temperature range.
This explains its suitability for processes conducted at elevated temperatures.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant can therefore be advantageous in industrial cleaning, polymerization, coating production and other processes where lower-EO surfactants could lose aqueous solubility at the operating temperature.

Ethoxylation level has a direct influence on cloud point.
Increasing the number of ethylene oxide units generally increases hydrophilicity and raises the cloud point.
TERGITOL NP-30, with approximately 30 EO units, consequently provides significantly greater water solubility than lower homologues such as NP-6, NP-9 or NP-10.

This difference allows members of the nonylphenol ethoxylate family to perform different formulation roles.
Lower-EO grades can act as more lipophilic emulsifiers or oil-soluble surface-active agents.
TERGITOL NP-30 is positioned toward the strongly hydrophilic end of the range.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant useful as a stabilizing co-emulsifier when a formulation requires substantial water compatibility.
TERGITOL NP-30 can also improve wetting of pigment and filler surfaces.
Water alone has relatively high surface tension and may not spread rapidly across hydrophobic particles.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant lowers surface tension and promotes contact between the liquid phase and solid surface.
This is useful in paints, coatings, pigment concentrates and other aqueous dispersions.
Better initial wetting facilitates subsequent mechanical dispersion.

However, wetting and dispersion should not be considered identical functions.
Wetting allows liquid to replace air on the particle surface.
Dispersion requires the wetted particles to remain separated throughout processing and storage.

TERGITOL NP-30 can support both processes, although dedicated polymeric dispersants may also be required in highly concentrated pigment systems.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant can be particularly useful as part of a multicomponent surfactant package.
A polymeric dispersant may provide strong adsorption and long-term particle stabilization while TERGITOL NP-30 provides wetting, emulsification and interfacial control.

This complementary use is common in paints, coatings and polymer dispersions.
TERGITOL NP-30 is also valuable in emulsion polymerization.
Emulsion polymerization involves dispersing hydrophobic monomers in an aqueous continuous phase.

Surfactants stabilize monomer droplets, growing polymer particles and the resulting latex dispersion.
TERGITOL NP-30 can provide nonionic stabilization through its hydrated polyoxyethylene chains.
This stabilization mechanism is relatively insensitive to some changes in electrolyte concentration compared with systems relying only on ionic repulsion.

For this reason, nonionic surfactants are frequently combined with anionic emulsifiers in emulsion polymerization.
The anionic surfactant provides electrostatic stabilization while TERGITOL NP-30 contributes steric stabilization.
The combination can improve latex stability under challenging conditions.

TERGITOL NP-30 has been used in the polymerization of vinyl acetate and other vinyl esters.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant can also be used with acrylates, vinyl chloride, ethylene, styrene/acrylic dispersions and butadiene/styrene latex systems.
In these applications, the surfactant may be added during polymerization or incorporated after polymerization depending on the intended function.

Addition during polymerization can influence particle nucleation and latex stabilization.
Post-addition can be used to adjust final stability, wetting or freeze/thaw behavior.
TERGITOL NP-30 can help reduce coagulum formation in suitable latex formulations.

Coagulum represents undesirable polymer aggregation that can produce filtration problems, deposits and product loss.
Improved interfacial stabilization can reduce this tendency.
Electrolyte resistance is another important consideration.

Latex dispersions may encounter salts from initiators, buffers, pigments or downstream formulation ingredients.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant a nonionic surfactant does not rely exclusively on surface electrical charge and can therefore contribute to stability when ionic conditions change.
Freeze/thaw stability can also benefit from appropriate nonionic surfactant selection.

Repeated freezing and thawing can destabilize polymer dispersions as particles are forced together during ice formation.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant a hydrated polyoxyethylene layer around latex particles can help reduce irreversible particle association.
TERGITOL NP-30 should nevertheless be optimized together with the complete latex formulation because excess surfactant can influence water resistance, foam, film properties and coating performance.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant performance therefore depends on dosage as well as chemical identity.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant's foam profile is moderate to relatively high under standardized test conditions.
Dow reports an initial Ross-Miles foam height of approximately 125 mm at 0.1% actives, decreasing to approximately 77 mm after five minutes.

This indicates that TERGITOL NP-30 is not primarily a low-foam surfactant.
Processes that are highly sensitive to foam may therefore require additional formulation work or a dedicated defoamer.
In applications where foam is not critical, the same surface activity contributes useful wetting and cleaning performance.

TERGITOL NP-30 is supplied as a 100% active product.
A separate TERGITOL NP-30 (70%) grade is also commercially available as a diluted aqueous form.
The two grades have the same basic surfactant chemistry and similar HLB and EO characteristics but differ in active content and handling properties.

The 100% grade has a pour point of approximately 37 °C.
This relatively high pour point is caused partly by the long ethoxylate chain and should be considered during storage and pumping.
Below the pour point, the product can become highly viscous or develop a solid or semi-solid physical form.

Temperature-controlled handling may therefore be necessary.
The 70% aqueous grade has a considerably lower pour point and remains easier to pump under cooler conditions.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant introduces additional water into the formulation.
Selection between the 100% and 70% grades therefore depends on storage facilities, transport, formulation water balance and manufacturing process.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant incorporated without introducing a large quantity of additional water.
This can be advantageous in concentrated formulations or processes where water content is carefully controlled.
The pour point of approximately 37 °C is an important handling parameter.

At temperatures below this level, the material may no longer behave as a freely flowing liquid.
Drums, intermediate containers and transfer systems may therefore require warming before use.
Heating should be controlled and uniform rather than applying excessive localized heat.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant is sufficiently warm and homogeneous, its low volatility makes it suitable for controlled pumping and metering.
The reported vapor pressure is below 0.01 mmHg at 20 °C.
This means TERGITOL NP-30 does not behave like a volatile organic solvent under normal conditions.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant nevertheless requires normal industrial hygiene during heated processing, spraying or operations capable of generating mist.
The relative density is approximately 1.10 at 25 °C.
This parameter is relevant when converting between volume and mass during formulation and when designing storage or metering equipment.

TERGITOL NP-30 is described as highly water soluble by Dow.
This characteristic is consistent with the 30-mole ethoxylate chain and HLB of 17.1.
The strong aqueous affinity is particularly valuable when the surfactant must dissolve rapidly and remain uniformly distributed in the continuous water phase.

The long ethoxylate chain also increases molecular weight substantially.
TERGITOL NP-30 has an average calculated molecular weight of approximately 1540 g/mol.
Because ethoxylated surfactants contain a distribution of homologues around the nominal EO value, this should be understood as an average rather than a single exact molecular mass for every molecule in the commercial product.

Uses:
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant is primarily used as a high-HLB nonionic wetting agent, emulsifier, stabilizer, dispersing aid and detergent in industrial aqueous formulations.
Paints and coatings represent one of the principal commercial application areas.
TERGITOL NP-30 can assist the incorporation of pigments, fillers, resins and other hydrophobic materials into water-based coating systems.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant high water solubility makes it particularly suitable where the continuous phase is strongly aqueous.
Pigment wetting is one of its important functions in coatings.
Pigment particles frequently contain surfaces that are not easily wetted by pure water.

TERGITOL NP-30 lowers the surface tension of the liquid phase and improves contact between water and the pigment surface.
Improved wetting reduces the amount of air trapped around pigment particles during dispersion.
This facilitates mechanical incorporation of pigments during high-speed mixing or milling.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant can therefore be used in pigment preparations and aqueous pigment concentrates.
In such systems, TERGITOL NP-30 may be combined with a polymeric dispersant.
The nonionic surfactant provides rapid surface wetting while the polymeric dispersant provides stronger long-term particle separation.

This combination can improve color development, dispersion efficiency and storage stability.
Architectural coatings can use TERGITOL NP-30 where strong wetting and emulsion stabilization are required.
Latex paints contain polymer dispersion, pigment, filler, thickener, defoamer and numerous other ingredients.

A nonionic surfactant can support compatibility among these components.
The surfactant level must nevertheless be controlled.
Excessive free surfactant can reduce water resistance or alter foam characteristics in the dried coating.

Industrial coatings represent another application area.
Waterborne industrial coatings often contain hydrophobic binder components and pigments that require effective interfacial stabilization.
TERGITOL NP-30 can improve wetting and contribute to stable incorporation of these materials.

Emulsion polymerization is another major application.
TERGITOL NP-30 can be used during manufacture of vinyl acetate polymers and copolymers.
Vinyl acetate can be polymerized together with other vinyl esters, acrylates, ethylene or related monomers to form latex dispersions.

TERGITOL NP-30 helps stabilize the polymer particles formed during this process.
Acrylic dispersions also use nonionic surfactants.
Acrylic and styrene-acrylic latexes are widely used in coatings, adhesives, paper treatments and construction formulations.

TERGITOL NP-30 can contribute steric stabilization through its hydrated polyoxyethylene chains.
Styrene-butadiene latex represents another relevant polymerization system.
These latexes are used in paper, carpet, adhesives and other industrial products.

TERGITOL NP-30 can be incorporated as part of the emulsifier package during or after polymerization.
Electrolyte resistance is particularly valuable in polymer dispersions.
Latex systems can contain initiator residues, salts, pigments and other ionic materials.

TERGITOL NP-30 provides nonionic stabilization that can complement conventional anionic emulsifiers under these conditions.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant freeze/thaw stability is another reason to use a highly ethoxylated nonionic surfactant.
During freezing, water crystallization concentrates the dispersed polymer particles and dissolved ingredients into a smaller liquid volume.

This forces particles into closer contact.
A well-hydrated nonionic surface layer can reduce the probability of permanent particle fusion during this process.
After thawing, this can improve recovery of the original latex state.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant cleaning formulations are another important area for TERGITOL NP-30.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant provides detergency, wetting and solubilization properties that can help remove oily and particulate contamination from hard surfaces.
Industrial degreasing processes can benefit from its ability to emulsify oil into an aqueous wash medium.

The hydrophobic nonylphenyl region associates with oily soil while the polyoxyethylene chain interacts with water.
Agitation then helps detach contamination from the substrate.
Micelle formation keeps a portion of the removed hydrophobic material suspended in the cleaning bath.

This helps reduce redeposition onto the cleaned surface.
TERGITOL NP-30 can therefore contribute to both soil removal and soil suspension.
The high cloud point makes it especially relevant to cleaning operations conducted at elevated temperature.

Hot cleaning normally increases soil removal but can create problems for nonionic surfactants with low cloud points.
TERGITOL NP-30 remains highly water compatible close to the boiling point of water in dilute aqueous solution.
This gives formulators a broader operating-temperature range.

Scouring is another application specifically associated with TERGITOL NP-30.
Industrial scouring involves removal of oils, waxes and other contaminants from substrates before subsequent processing.
Effective wetting and emulsification are essential because hydrophobic contamination must be transferred from the surface into the wash liquor.

TERGITOL NP-30 can assist this transfer.
Metal surface cleaning can similarly require nonionic surfactants where oil and processing residues must be removed.
However, the use of nonylphenol ethoxylates in metalworking and cleaning is subject to significant regulatory restrictions in the European Union.

The intended market and application must therefore be checked before selecting TERGITOL NP-30 for these uses.
Agrochemical formulations represent another established application.
Dow identifies TERGITOL NP-30 as suitable for agrochemical wetting, emulsification, dispersion and stabilization.

Agricultural active ingredients frequently have limited water solubility and must be formulated with surfactants to obtain acceptable handling and application performance.
TERGITOL NP-30 can assist oil-in-water emulsification where a hydrophobic active ingredient or solvent phase must be dispersed in water.
The high HLB value makes it particularly appropriate as the hydrophilic component of an emulsifier system.

Multiple surfactants may be combined to obtain the exact HLB required by the oil phase.
TERGITOL NP-30 can therefore be blended with a lower-HLB surfactant to tune emulsion properties.
Suspension-type agricultural formulations can also use TERGITOL NP-30 as a wetting aid.

Hydrophobic pesticide particles must first become wetted before polymeric dispersants can provide effective long-term stabilization.
Improved surface wetting can facilitate milling and reduce persistent dry agglomerates.
Tank-mix formulations can also benefit from surface-tension reduction.

Lower surface tension can improve spreading of the spray solution across plant surfaces.
However, final agricultural use must comply with the regulatory approvals applicable to the target market.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant for certain inert-ingredient applications, including non-food and specified pre- and post-harvest uses.

These clearances should not be interpreted as universal approval for every pesticide formulation or jurisdiction.
Formulators must verify the regulatory status of the finished product in the intended market.
Oilfield formulations represent another documented use, particularly for the aqueous 70% grade.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant qilfield drilling and production systems often require emulsification, wetting and interfacial control under demanding temperature and electrolyte conditions.
The high ethoxylation level and high cloud point can make NP-30 chemistry useful where strong aqueous compatibility is required.
Oilfield formulations may contain hydrocarbons, brines, mineral solids and polymeric additives simultaneously.

A nonionic surfactant can help manage interactions between these phases.
Performance should nevertheless be evaluated under the actual salinity, temperature and pressure conditions of the process.
Textile processing has historically represented an important application area for nonylphenol ethoxylates.

Scouring, wetting and emulsification of processing oils can benefit from their surface-active properties.
TERGITOL NP-30 can help emulsify oils removed from fibers and improve penetration of aqueous processing baths.
However, the use of nonylphenol ethoxylates in textile processing and in washable textile articles is heavily restricted in the European Union.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant should not be presented as a generally unrestricted textile auxiliary for EU applications.
REACH restrictions must be reviewed before any textile-related use.
Paper-processing systems have also historically used nonylphenol ethoxylates for wetting and emulsification.

Aqueous pulp and coating processes contain resins, oils, pigments and other materials that can require surface-active control.
Again, European regulatory restrictions on nonylphenol ethoxylates must be considered before selecting the product for pulp and paper applications.
TERGITOL NP-30 can be used as a general solubilizer for hydrophobic ingredients.

Micellar solubilization allows certain water-insoluble compounds to be incorporated into aqueous formulations at concentrations greater than would otherwise be possible.
The effectiveness depends strongly on the chemical structure of the solubilized material.
Aromatic and moderately hydrophobic materials may interact especially well with the nonylphenyl portion of the surfactant.

Emulsification of oils is another core application.
TERGITOL NP-30 has an HLB of 17.1 and therefore strongly favors oil-in-water emulsions.
Where the required HLB of an oil phase is lower, TERGITOL NP-30 can be blended with a more lipophilic surfactant.

The blended HLB can then be adjusted to match the oil phase.
This approach is widely used in emulsion formulation.
The high ethoxylate content also makes TERGITOL NP-30 useful as a stabilizing co-surfactant.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant a primary emulsifier may provide rapid interfacial adsorption, while NP-30 contributes a thick hydrated ethoxylate layer that improves steric stabilization.
This can reduce coalescence of emulsion droplets during storage.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant can also be evaluated for wax emulsification.

Hydrophobic waxes require effective surfactant coverage to form stable aqueous dispersions.
The exact emulsifier system depends on the wax melting point, polarity and processing temperature.
TERGITOL NP-30's high cloud point is useful where emulsification must be carried out at elevated temperature.

Paraffin emulsions represent a related application.
Molten paraffin can be dispersed into hot water in the presence of a suitable emulsifier system.
As the emulsion cools, the wax droplets solidify.

Adequate interfacial stabilization must be maintained during both the hot emulsification stage and subsequent cooling.
TERGITOL NP-30 can contribute to the hydrophilic side of such emulsifier systems.
Resin emulsification is another possible use.

Hydrophobic resin phases can be dispersed in water for coatings, adhesives or process formulations.
The compatibility of TERGITOL NP-30 with the specific resin must be confirmed experimentally.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant aromatic resin systems may interact differently from aliphatic oils.

Formulators should therefore determine the required surfactant blend using emulsion stability testing rather than relying only on HLB calculations.
TERGITOL NP-30 is also compatible with quaternary ammonium compounds.
This makes it technically useful in formulations where cationic materials are present.

Many anionic surfactants cannot be combined freely with cationic surfactants because ion-pair formation can cause precipitation or loss of surface activity.
A nonionic surfactant such as TERGITOL NP-30 avoids this direct electrostatic incompatibility.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant compatibility can be useful in certain industrial formulations containing quaternary ammonium compounds.

However, chemical compatibility does not by itself establish regulatory suitability for every antimicrobial or disinfectant use.
The final application must comply with the corresponding regulatory framework.
TERGITOL NP-30 can also function as a stabilizer in systems subjected to elevated temperatures.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant approximately 100 °C cloud point provides greater temperature tolerance than many lower-EO alkylphenol ethoxylates.
This characteristic is useful where temporary heating occurs during polymerization, emulsification or cleaning.
Temperature remains important because approaching or exceeding the cloud point changes the hydration of the polyoxyethylene chain.

Once significant dehydration occurs, solution appearance and surfactant partitioning can change.
Cooling below the cloud point usually restores the original aqueous behavior provided the formulation has not undergone irreversible destabilization.
For technical purchasing, the distinction between TERGITOL NP-30 and TERGITOL NP-30 (70%) is important.

The 100% active grade has a pour point around 37 °C and may require heated handling.
The 70% aqueous grade is much easier to pump at low ambient temperature and has a pour point around -8 °C.
However, TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant active concentration is only about 70%.

Dosage calculations should therefore be made on active surfactant rather than total product mass when comparing the two grades.
The two grades also exhibit slightly different measured surface tension and CMC values because of the supplied form and test conditions.
TERGITOL NP-30 should also be distinguished from other members of the TERGITOL NP series.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant directly changes HLB, water solubility, cloud point, foam behavior and emulsification characteristics.
A lower-EO NP grade cannot automatically replace NP-30 without changing formulation behavior.
For an emulsion, such substitution may shift the effective HLB sufficiently to destabilize the system.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant can alter detergency, wetting and temperature response.
For polymerization, it can change latex particle stabilization.
Grade selection should therefore be based on the intended interfacial requirement.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant covers paints and coatings, emulsion polymerization, pigment wetting, industrial cleaning, degreasing, scouring, aqueous emulsions, agrochemical formulations, oilfield formulations and other technical systems requiring strong water solubility and high-HLB nonionic surface activity.
Its most characteristic formulation advantages are high water solubility, strong emulsification, good detergency and wetting, compatibility with many formulation components and useful performance at elevated temperatures.

Safety Profile:
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant should be handled according to the current Safety Data Sheet and normal industrial chemical-handling procedures.
Dow's product-specific safety information classifies TERGITOL NP-30 as harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
Uncontrolled release into surface water, groundwater, drains or soil should therefore be prevented.

Spills should be contained and collected rather than washed directly into drainage systems.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant has low acute oral toxicity under normal industrial exposure scenarios.
Nevertheless, ingestion should be prevented through appropriate workplace hygiene.

Eating, drinking and smoking should be avoided in handling areas.
Hands should be washed before breaks and after handling.
TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant prolonged skin contact may cause slight irritation.

Suitable protective gloves should be used where prolonged or repeated contact is expected.
Protective work clothing can reduce contamination of the skin during transfer and manufacturing operations.
Eye contact may cause temporary irritation.

Safety glasses with side protection should therefore be used during industrial handling.
Where splashing of heated or liquefied material is possible, additional face protection may be appropriate.
The very low vapor pressure means significant vapor generation is not expected under normal ambient conditions.

However, heated processing or mechanical operations can create mist.
Adequate general or local ventilation should be used where airborne exposure could occur.
Respiratory protection should be selected according to the workplace risk assessment where engineering controls do not provide adequate control.

TERGITOL NP-30 becomes liquid above its pour point and spilled material can create a significant slipping hazard.
Leaks and spills should therefore be cleaned promptly.
Absorbent materials such as sand or suitable inert solids can be used for containment.

The product should not be cleaned up by deliberately flushing large quantities into the wastewater system.
TERGITOL NP-30 is chemically stable under normal storage conditions.
Strong acids, strong bases and strong oxidizing agents should be avoided as incompatible materials.

Exposure to excessive temperatures can cause decomposition.
Combustion can produce carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and other irritating or toxic decomposition products.
Firefighting procedures should follow the current SDS.

TERGITOL NP-30 Surfactant is not classified as a conventional highly flammable liquid and no closed-cup flash point is assigned in Dow's product-specific SDS.
Nevertheless, organic surfactant material can burn under appropriate fire conditions.
Containers should therefore be protected from excessive heat and fire exposure.

Storage should be under moderate temperature conditions in properly closed containers.
Because the 100% active product has a pour point near 37 °C, controlled warming may be required for pumping or transfer.
Heating equipment should avoid excessive localized temperatures.

Once heated, the product should be mixed sufficiently to obtain a homogeneous material before use.
One of the most important considerations for TERGITOL NP-30 is its regulatory status as a nonylphenol ethoxylate.
Nonylphenol ethoxylates are subject to significant restrictions in the European Union because of environmental concerns associated particularly with degradation products and aquatic exposure.

Under REACH Annex XVII Entry 46, nonylphenol and nonylphenol ethoxylates at concentrations of 0.1% or greater are restricted for a number of uses, including domestic cleaning and many industrial cleaning, textile and leather processing, metalworking, pulp and paper, cosmetic, personal-care, pesticide and biocidal applications, subject to specified exceptions.

For this reason, a technically effective application should not automatically be treated as a legally permitted application in the European Union.
The regulatory status of the exact use, concentration and process conditions must be checked before commercial formulation.
REACH Annex XVII Entry 46a additionally restricts nonylphenol ethoxylates in textile articles that can reasonably be expected to be washed in water during their normal lifecycle.

This is particularly important because nonylphenol ethoxylates have historically been widely used in textile wetting and scouring.
Historical technical suitability therefore does not imply unrestricted modern European use.
Nonylphenol ethoxylates also belong to a substance group identified by ECHA under the Candidate List framework because of their relationship to environmentally hazardous nonylphenol degradation products.

Technical purchasers operating in the European market should therefore evaluate regulatory compliance before approving TERGITOL NP-30 for a new formulation.
Alternative surfactant chemistries may be preferable where regulations, customer specifications, ecolabel requirements or sustainability policies exclude alkylphenol ethoxylates.
The applicable Safety Data Sheet, regulatory data sheet and local regulations should always take precedence when determining permitted uses, handling controls, environmental management, storage and disposal.
