Other names :
Polyethylene glycol nonylphenyl ether; Nonyl phenoxypolyethoxylethanol; Nonoxynol-407

Tergitol NP-40 (also known as Tergitol-type NP-40 and nonyl phenoxypolyethoxylethanol) is a commercially available detergent .
Tergitol NP-40 is an ethoxylated nonylphenol for non-ionic surfactants and can act as emulsifier and demulsifier agent.
Tergitol NP-40 is often used to break open all membranes within a cell, including the nuclear membrane.
To break only the cytoplasmic membrane, other detergents such as IGEPAL CA-630 can be used.

Tergitol NP-40 has applications in paper and textile processing, in paints and coatings, and in agrochemical manufacturing.
Care should be taken to avoid confusing Tergitol NP-40 with Nonidet P-40 (octyl phenoxypolyethoxylethanol) which is currently out of production.
Nonidet P-40 ("Non-Ionic Detergent") was originally manufactured and trademarked by the Shell Chemical Company, but was phased out of production in the early 2000s.
Confusingly, biochemical protocols published between the 1960s and 2000s refer to Shell's Nonidet P-40 as Tergitol NP-40.

Shell's original Nonidet P-40 had a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) value of 13.5, as opposed to 12.9 for the currently available IGEPAL CA-630, indicating that the currently available compound is more potent than the compound used in older publications.
Indeed, according to a 2017 report, an additional dilution factor of 10 was required for the currently available Tergitol NP-40 ("Nonidet P-40 substitutes") to match the activity of the previously available, and now discontinued, Shell's Nonidet P-40.

Tergitol NP-40 is a surface-active agent that acts as a non-ionic surfactant.

Application of TERGITOL NP-40
Tergitol NP-40 has been used in a study to quantify the volumetric mass transfer coefficient and liquid film coefficient using a dynamic surface tension measurement.
Tergitol NP-40 has also been used in a study to investigate the use of surfactant solutions and colloidal gas aphron to remove naphthalene from a contaminated soil matrix.

Tergitol NP-40 is a Nonylphenol Ethoxylate surfactant.
Tergitol NP-40 is non-ionic and provides excellent detergency, outstanding wetting, versatile solubility characteristics and low odor.
Tergitol NP-40 is suggested for use in paper & textile processing, paints & coatings and agrochemicals.

Features of Tergitol NP-40:

-Tergitol NP-40 —a nonionic detergent for use in various protein methods
-Accurate—precise 10% detergent solutions in ultrapure water
-Easy-to-use—solutions are simple to dispense and dilute for use
-Exceptionally pure—less than 1.0µeq/mL peroxides and carbonyls
-Stable—packaged under inert nitrogen gas in HDPE bottles

Applications of TERGITOL NP-40
Tergitol NP-40 Br Substitute (NP-40 alternative) is used as nonionic surface-active agent.
Tergitol NP-40 is an effective emulsifier for solvents such as xylene.
Furthermore in Biochemistry, Tergitol NP-40 substitute (br) is a nonionic surfactant used in the isolation of membrane complexes.
Due to its nonionic structure, this product is compatible with anionic surfactants and is stable in the presence of acids, bases, and salts.
Tergitol NP-40 should not be mixed with concentrated oxidizing or reducing agents since the mixture of these compounds with organic compounds could form a potentially explosive mixture.

Tergitol NP-40: a nonionic, non-denaturing detergent, octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol, made by Shell Chemical Co., and later by Sigma-Aldrich, though it was taken off the market in the early-2000s.
Tergitol NP-40 was often abbreviated "NP-40," including by Sigma-Aldrich on the label, but it should not be confused with Dow Chemical's Tergitol "NP-40," which is used to break open cell and nuclear membranes.

The Tergitol NP-40 molecule contains a total of 54 atom(s).
There are 32 Hydrogen atom(s), 19 Carbon atom(s) and 3 Oxygen atom(s).
A chemical formula of Tergitol NP-40 can therefore be written as:
C19H32O3

The chemical formula of 2-[2-(4-Nonylphenoxy)ethoxy]ethanol shown above is based on the molecular formula indicating the numbers of each type of atom in a molecule without structural information, which is different from the empirical formula which provides the numerical proportions of atoms of each type.

The above chemical formula is the basis of stoichiometry in chemical equations, i.e., the calculation of relative quantities of reactants and products in chemical reactions. The law of conservation of mass dictates that the quantity of each element given in the chemical formula does not change in a chemical reaction. Thus, each side of the chemical equation must represent the same quantity of any particular element based on the chemical formula.

Applications
Used as analytical standard for environmental analysis.
ISO/CD 18857-2 (International Organization for Standardization, Geneva) describes a new international standard method for the determination of octylphenol, nonylphenol, their mono- and diethyoxylates, and bisphenol A in nonfiltered samples of drinking, groundwater, surface water, and wastewater.

Tergitol NP-40 is an organic compound, widely used as a component or solvent for nitrocellulose and in a variety of dyes, inks, cleaning agents, resins, paints, varnishes, etc.
Tergitol NP-40 is also used for increasing the stability of emulsions.
Tergitol NP-40 may be used as an extraction solvent for the quantification and analysis of algal lipids from algae samples using normal-phase high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) coupled in parallel to an evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) and quadrupole mass spectrometer(QMS).

Use of Tergitol NP-40
The product is a non-ionic surfactant, is a kind of external spermicidal contraceptives, the United States Pharmacopoeia 1990xx11 edition collection.
This product can change the osmotic pressure of sperm and kill sperm or make sperm lose the ability to swim and can not enter the cervix, can not be fertilized and achieve the purpose of contraception.

Tergitol NP-40 used in biomedical laboratories are mild surfactants (surface acting agents), used for cell lysis (i.e., the disruption of cell membranes) and the release of intracellular materials.
They are amphiphilic molecules, containing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions.
This amphiphilic property allows detergents to break protein-protein, protein-lipid and lipid-lipid associations, denature proteins and other macromolecules, and prevent nonspecific binding in immunochemical assays and protein crystallization.
