Physical and chemical properties
Trialkyl trimellitates are colorless to slightly yellow liquids of low volatility and molecular weights from about to .
Although they are generally insoluble or only sparingly soluble in water, these components are readily soluble in most organic solvents and oils.

Production Method
Trialkyl trimellitates can be synthesized under conventional esterification conditions from trimellitic acid, acid chloride or anhydride with the corresponding alcohol (for example, trimellitic anhydride with 2-ethylhexanol to synthesize triethylhexyl trimellitate).
Most commonly, these trialkyl trimellitates are produced by esterification of trimellitic anhydride.
Tridecyl Trimellitate is also a fair amount of literature on the regioselective synthesis of such chemicals via transition metal-catalyzed, cotrimerization of acetylenic compounds via a [2+2+2] cyclization (for example, trimerization of isopropyl 2-propinoate can be done selectively).
For the production of "triisopropyl trimellitate" (not an ingredient)).
However, there are no published examples of this method for the components included in this safety assessment.

INDUSTRY
Cosmetic

Tridecyl trimellitate ("TDTM") is an ester of tridecyl alcohol and trimellitic acid and has recently been made available to the cosmetic industry.
Tridecyl Trimellitate is a very heavy viscosity, syrupy, odorless liquid that is slightly sticky on application but feels very soft on the skin.
Tridecyl stearate ("TDS") is the stearic acid ester of tridecyl alcohol and is a common ingredient in the cosmetic trade.
Tridecyl Trimellitate leaves a velvety effect and is recommended for use in all products that last throughout the day, such as moisturizers, lotions, make-up, face creams and day creams.
In the practice of the present invention, Tridecyl Trimellitate is mixed with at least one other ester, preferably at least two other esters, to formulate a blend that enhances the viscosity and feel of mineral oil for TDTM, toilet and cosmetic use.
Generally, esters blended with TDM will have a lower viscosity than TDTM.
While a wide variety of esters can be blended with TDTM, preferred esters are TDS, NPGC and DPHC.
The selection and amount of esters mixed with TDTM will vary depending on the desired viscosity of the final product and the intended feel of the product.
Illustrative, non-limiting examples of other esters that can be blended with TDTM are isodecyl trimellitate, isopropyl myristate, isopropyl palmitate, tridecyl myristate, tridecyl palmitate, isodecyl trimellitate, propylene glycol dicaprate/dicaprylate, neopentyl glycol dicaprate, and tricellyl trisolate.

TDTM in a given formulation can range from about 5% to about 85% by weight, preferably from about 5% to about 60% by weight, more preferably from about 8% to about 85%, depending on the ester blend. . 45% by weight , most preferably about 10% to about 38% by weight, eg, about 12% to about 37% by weight. Where the ester mixture is a low viscosity mixture, for example 70 SSU at 100 degrees. F., TDTM is preferably used at a rate of about 10% to about 14% by weight. For an intermediate viscosity mixture, for example 130 SSU at 100 degrees. According to F. , TDTM is preferably used at about 33% to about 38% by weight based on the ester blend and for a high viscosity blend, eg 350 SSU at 100 degrees. F., TDTM is preferably used at a rate of about 38 to about 42% by weight based on the ester blend.
The balance of Tridecyl Trimelitate of the ester blend may be at least one additional ester, preferably at least two additional esters, each of the two esters being used at a rate of about 2 to about 60% by weight of the ester blend, depending on the particular properties desired.
Tridecyl Trimelitate is a preferred embodiment where TDS is one of two or more additional esters blended with TDTM, about 5 to about 55% by weight can be used.
When the ester blend is a low viscosity blend, eg less than 150 SSU, TDS is preferably used at a rate of about 40% to about 50% by weight, more preferably about 42% to about 46% by weight, relative to the ester blend.
Where the ester blend is a higher viscosity blend, TDS is preferably used at a rate of about 5% to about 20% by weight, more preferably about 5% to about 12% by weight, most preferably about 6% to about 9% by weight, relative to the ester blend . .

Functions:
1. Emollient - Softens and soothes the skin.
It prevents water (moisture) loss from the skin.
It is widely used in place of mineral oil.
