TRIHYDROXYSTEARIN

EC / List no.: 205-364-6
CAS no.: 139-44-6
Mol. formula: C57H110O9

Trihydroxystearin is a rheological additive made by hydrogenating castor oil resulting in a fine powder.
Melting Point 85-88oC.
Provides thixotropic thickening (shear thinning properties) in various oils including mineral, vegetable and silicones oils, and also low-polarity aliphatic solvents.
Imparts good pay-off in stick products. Improves stability when used in the oil phase of emulsions.
Can be used as a binder in pressed powers.

Trihydroxystearin is a mixture of glycerin and castor oil-derived fatty acids that is used in amounts between 1–7% as an emollient and thickening agent.

A Trihydroxystearin derivative that is used as an oil gelling agent.
Trihydroxystearin can thicken up both oils as well as silicones.

What Is Trihydroxystearin?
Trihydroxystearin is the triester of glycerin and hydroxystearic acid.
In cosmetics and personal care products, Trihydroxystearin is used in the formulation of body, hand and skin care preparations.
Trihydroxystearin is also used in makeup preparations including eye makeup, blushers, face powders, foundations and lipstick.

Why is Trihydroxystearin used in cosmetics and personal care products?
Trihydroxystearin increases the thickness of the lipid (oil) portion of cosmetics products.
When used in skin care formulations, it slows the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin’s surface.

Scientific Facts:
Trihydroxystearin is derived from the fatty acid, Hydroxystearic Acid.
One method of producing both Trihydroxystearin and hydroxystearic acid involves the catalytic hydrogenation of castor oil.

Trihydroxystearin is a wax-like hydrogenated derivative of castor oil.
Trihydroxystearin has many industrial applications.

Trihydroxystearin increases the thickness of the lipid (oil) portion of cosmetics
When used in skin care formulations, it slows the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin's surface.

Trihydroxystearin Gives a thickening (thickening) in oil or silicone in the form.
Thixotropic (means when the shear force is applied, the viscosity of the substance is reduced.
But when the viscosity is stopped, it will return to its original state), which is considered to be a flow characteristic that is suitable for all kinds of makeup, especially any make-up.

Trihydroxystearin Are used in various formulas as follows

- water-in-oil to help increase the stability of the formula By increasing the viscosity of the oil phase

- Optimized color pay-off in any form of color-cosmetics.

- Acts as a binder in pressed-powder formulations.

- Oil thickener to thicken the oil

Rheological additive made by hydrogenating castor oil resulting in a fine powder.
Melting Point 85-88oC.
Off-white powder, faint odor.
 Water-insoluble, oil-soluble.
Non-animal origin.
Approved by Ecocert Greenlife in accordance with the Natural and Organic Cosmetics standards.

Trihydroxystearin
Trihydroxystearin (THS) is a triester of three ester groups.
Trihydroxystearin is derived as the castor oil derivative used in formulations of cosmetics, skincare and personal care.
Trihydroxystearin is an excellent thickener that offers a high degree of thixotropy and controls the flow of the product.
Trihydroxystearin promotes emulsion stability in fluid systems and is used as a skin-conditioning agent.
There are many other castor oil cosmetics uses.
For example in lipsticks, antiperspirant, and hair gels, it acts as a stiffening agent.
Trihydroxystearin has a low melting point than other waxes.
Using THS in personal care products slows the loss of water by forming a barrier on the skin.
Trihydroxystearin can also be used as a binder in pressed powders.

More Useful Applications
In Lubricants as Lubricant Additives
In Laundry and Dishwasher products
In Paints and Coatings
As Viscosity Adjustors
In Personal Care Products – Mascara, Lip Balms, Conditioners
