TRISILOXANE

Trisiloxane is a linear siloxane.
Trisiloxane acts as a good antifoaming and skin conditioning agent in personal care applications.
Trisiloxane surfactants or polyetherdimethylsiloxanes (PEMS), often referred to as superspreaders or superwetters, are added to pesticides to enhance the activity and the rainfastness of the active substance by promoting rapid spreading over the hydrophobic surfaces of leaves.

CAS Number : 107-51-7
EC  Number : 203-497-4
EINECS/ELINCS No : 203-497-4
Molecular Formula    :  C8H24O2Si3
Molecular Weight    :  236.53

These surfactants are also added to a range of other products including cosmetics, polyurethane foams, textiles and fibers, paints and coatings, and car care products.
Trisiloxane is an organosiloxane that is trisiloxane in which all the hydrogens have been replaced by methyl groups.

Use and Manufacturing of Trisiloxane
Used as a base for extreme temperature silicone oils/fluids and as a foam suppressant in petroleum lubricating oils; [Merck Index] Used mainly to make polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymers, oligomers, and mixtures; Also used to make basic chemicals, paints, coatings, adhesives, soaps, cleaning compounds, toiletries, plastics, semiconductors, and other electronic components, and in building construction, lubricants, diluents, solvents, and cosmetics

Trisiloxane is a modified polysiloxane having excellent cosmetic worthy properties with uses in personal care industry.
Soluble in water, alcohol, and hydro-alcoholic systems.
Trisiloxane acts as a surface tension depressant, wetting agent, emulsifier and foam builder in a wide variety of cosmetic and personal care products, including hair sprays, shampoos, skin care, lotions, perfumes and shaving soaps.
Trisiloxane gives stable foam.
In conditioning shampoos, Trisiloxane provides wet and dry combing in addition to imparting a silky, soft feel to the hair without build up even after repeated wash cycles.
Trisiloxane provides the properties of conditioning, emolliency and de-tackification in both body and hair shower products.

Properties of Trisiloxane
Appearance    : Clear to pale yellow colored liquid
Viscosity    : 200 – 5000 cPs.
% Active Content :     100
R.I.at 25°C     :  1.440 – 1.460

FEATURES of Trisiloxane
-Excellent compatibility with organic solvents and easy to be mixed with such formulations
-Excellent compatibility various enamels and lacquers
-Foam enhancer & forms stable foam
-Excellent foam builder
-Reduces surface tension
-Wetting effect

Trisiloxane is a lipophilic benzotriazole derivative marketed as Mexoryl XL by L'Oréal and is used in sunscreens to absorb UV radiation.
Trisiloxane is a broad-spectrum UV absorber with two absorption peaks, one at 303 nm (UVB) and one at 344 nm (UVA).
Just like Mexoryl SX (ecamsule), Trisiloxane is used exclusively in products by L'Oréal owned brands.
Trisiloxane and ecamsule are often used together, because they show a synergistic effect in protection.

Trisiloxane has reported cosmetic use including:
in antiperspirants and deodorants (in aerosol or gel forms at concentrations of 1–5 % as listed on the US HPD); and as anti-foaming and skin conditioning agents in body and hand preparations, colognes, eye lotions, eye makeup preparations, foundations, hair conditioners, and in indoor tanning preparations.

Application of Trisiloxane
Trisiloxane is used as a linear inhibitor in the formulating of two-part Silicone RTV-2 Addition Curing systems.
Because of the large vinyl content, small amounts are very effective in retarding and controlling the working time or pot life of two-part Addition-Curing Silicone RTVs.
Also, due to its boiling point of 139c, it is easily volatilized during curing.
A suggested starting formulation is to use 0.25 to 0.50 parts by weight of USi-O6214 with 100 parts of the Base polymer containing the platinum catalyst.

Trisiloxane is an industrial chemical.
Trisiloxane is not expected to occur naturally in the environment.
Trisiloxane is formed as a reaction by-product (left over from manufacturing processes) in adhesives, paint and coating additives, and cosmetics including some personal care products.
Trisiloxane is not manufactured in Canada but is imported into Canada as an impurity in end-use products.

Trisiloxane is a dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) sorbent that has been used in the separation of sesquiterpene lactones.
Trisiloxane has shown to be effective in the pre-treatment of samples for GC/MS analysis, although it has only been used successfully with fatty acids and potassium dichromate.
Trisiloxane is lipophilic in nature and can be absorbed by skin cells.
Trisiloxane also absorbs UVA radiation, which may have an adverse effect on DNA synthesis or cell division.
