It is a food additive, E331 (iii), which can be used as an acidity regulator, sequestering agent, emulsifier or stabilizer. Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate has the formula Na3C6H5O7. Quite often it is simply called sodium citrate, however sodium citrate can refer to any of the three sodium salts of citric acid. Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate has a slightly acidic flavor.

Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate is mainly used as a food additive normally as a flavoring or as a preservative6. Its E number is E331. Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate is used as a flavoring agent in some varieties of lemonades. Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate is common as an ingredient in Bratwurst sausages and is also used in industrialized drinks to give them an acidic taste. It is used in ice cream, jams, powdered milk, industrialized cheese, soft drinks and wine.

Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate buffer
As a weak acid conjugate base, Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate can be a buffer resistant to changes in pH. Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate is used to control the acidity of certain substances such as gelatin-based desserts. Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate can be found in the mini milk tanks that come with coffee machines. It is one of the compounds of anti-acid products to be dissolved in water sold in pharmacies.

Medical use of Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate
In 1914, the Belgian doctor Albert Hustin and the researcher Luis Agote successfully used Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate as an anti-coagulant in blood transfusions. Trisodium citrate 5.5 is still hydrated today in blood collection tubes or for storage in blood banks. The citrate ion sequesters calcium ions from the blood to form calcium citrate complexes that prevent clotting.

In 2003, Oöpik, et al., Showed that, in trained runners, ingestion of a solution of Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate (0.5 g per kg of weight) improves performance on courses of 5 km7.

Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate is used to relieve the discomfort of urinary tract infection such as cystitis, to reduce renal tubular acidosis, and can also be used as an osmotic laxative. It is the most important compound of oral rehydration solution recommended by WHO and UNICEF.

Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate is used as a flavoring agent in some varieties of lemonades. Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate is common as an ingredient in Bratwurst sausages and is also used in industrialized drinks to give them an acidic taste. In 1914, the Belgian doctor Albert Hustin and the researcher Luis Agote successfully used Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate as an anti-coagulant in blood transfusions. Trisodium citrate 5.5 is still hydrated today in blood collection tubes or for storage in blood banks. The citrate ion sequesters calcium ions from the blood to form calcium citrate complexes that prevent clotting.

In 2003, Oöpik, et al., Showed that, in trained runners, ingestion of a solution of Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate (0.5 g per kg of weight) improves performance on courses of 5 km7.

Trisodium citrate 5.5 hydrate is used to relieve the discomfort of urinary tract infection such as cystitis, to reduce renal tubular acidosis, and can also be used as an osmotic laxative. It is the most important compound of oral rehydration solution recommended by WHO and UNICEF.
