Tung Oil is a drying oil obtained by pressing the seed from the nut of the tung tree. Tung Oil hardens upon exposure to air and the resulting coating is transparent and has a deep, almost wet look. Tung Oil mostly for finishing and protecting wood, after numerous coats, the finish can even look plastic-like.

100% pure wood oil that is crushed from the kernel obtained from tung wood. Natural Tung Oil provides a tough, transparent and non-yellowing coating. It can be used on outdoor wood and indoor furniture. It is suitable for all wood that comes into contact with food when it does not contain VOCs.Tung Oil use are believed to have originated in ancient China and appear in the writings of Confucius from about 400 B.C. Raw Tung Oil tends to dry to a fine wrinkled finish; the US name for this is gas checking: this property was used to make wrinkle finishes, usually by adding excess cobalt drier. To stop this, the oil is heated to gas-proof it, and most oils used for coating are gas-proofed, also known as "boiled".The name is often used by paint and varnish manufacturers as a generic name for any wood finishing product that contains the Tung Oil and/or provides a finish that resembles the finish obtained with Tung Oil.
Tung Oil is a type of natural drying oil commonly used as a finish in woodworking projects. When applied to a raw surface, the oil hardens to protect and add luster to the wood. After sanding and cleaning the wood surface to remove any previous finish, spread the oil along the grain pattern using a clean, lint-free rag. Allow the oil to soak into the surface for an hour, then sand lightly to promote adhesion. Wait a 3-7 days to apply followup coats. Tung Oil may take several weeks to cure completely, but once it does it will provide a resilient, long-lasting layer of protection. Term Tung Oil, refers to the large, dark green, heart shaped leaves of the Tung tree. This is a fast growing, deciduous tree that reaches a height of about forty feet when mature. The life span of a Tung tree is about thirty years. Fruit bearing begins in the third year of tree growth.
The Tung Oil fruit occurs in clusters, each of which bear four or five nuts. When the nuts are dried and pressed they yield about twenty percent oil. Under favorable conditions an acre of Tung Oil trees will produce about two tons of nuts and eight hundred pounds (one hundred gallons) of raw Tung Oil annually. Successful cultivation of Tung Oil trees requires exact climatic conditions, including the proper ratio of warm and cool days. The major growing areas include China, Argentina, Paraguay, and parts of Africa. This pure Tung Oil doesn't contain additives or distillates. It provides a professional finish that penetrates deep into the wood, but doesn't leave build-up or a glossy surface. The finish is water-resistant and protects against marring. It is Grade 1 Yellow Chinese Tung Oil, the highest quality available. The oil is FDA approved for food contact.Apply to wood with a clean rag and wait 40 - 90 minutes between coats. It may take up to 30 days to fully cure. It can be diluted with things like turpentine to decrease drying time. Keep the oil in an air-tight container, away from direct sunlight and extreme heat or cold.
Tung Oil is very popular today because of two properties: First it is natural or "green" product when it has dried. Secondly, after it cures (5 to 30 days,weather/temperature related), the result is a very hard and easily repaired finish. This is why it is used on boat decks and now on floors. The oil is often diluted with hydrocarbon thinner so that the viscosity is very low and enables the oil to penetrate the finest grain woods. This thinning vehicle evaporates within 15 to 20 minutes and results in a totally green residual finish. As mentioned above, when applied in many fine/thinner coats over wood, Tung Oil slowly cures to a satin "wetted wood" look with slight golden tint. Tung Oil resists liquid water better than any other pure oil finish and does not darken noticeably with age and is claimed to be less susceptible to mould than linseed oil. Most importantly, of all the oil finishes, Tung Oil is the only drying oil that will polymerize 100% (completely harden). Linseed oil, for example, never completely hardens.Since Tung Oil has become popular as an environmentally friendly wood finish, some products labelled as "Tung Oil" are actually blends containing other oils, varnishes, solvents, or chemical driers, and may even containing no Tung Oil at all Products labeled "Danish oil" may be Tung Oil or they may be polymerized linseed oil. The product packaging will usually clearly state if it is pure Tung Oil. Heating Tung Oil to about 500 °F (260 °C) in an oxygen-free environment will substantially increase the viscosity and film-forming quality of the product. Most polymerized Tung Oils are sold mixed with mineral spirits to make them easier to work with.[citation needed] Limonene and D-limonene are less toxic alternatives for mineral spirits.
The interior can be used for all woods (except the floor). Tung Oil can also be used on wood in contact with food. Especially gun handles, wooden handled cutting tools, wooden products for hobby purposes are especially preferred. As the number of layers increases, its brightness increases. The traditional technique for applying pure Tung Oil is to dilute the oil 1:1 with solvent, then apply a succession of very thin films with a soft, lint-free, non-fuzzy cloth such as tee-shirt cotton. Diluents range from traditional spirits of turpentine to any of the new citrus-based thinners to naphtha. The choice of thinner should be guided by how fast the coating needs to set. Naphtha works well in spray-on applications in well ventilated studios. Primary coats may be laid down at a 1:1 oil-to-thinner ratio, and successive layers, if not absorbed into the wood, at higher solvent to oil concentrations. This technique brings out the deepest color of the wood while maintaining a matte finish.
Tung Oil finishes that start with polymerized oils or Tung Oil preparations are best applied in the fat over lean principle: thinned pure oil is applied to deeply penetrate the surface, to fill pores. Straight oil is then applied moderately to adhere to the surface and provide a good base for the thick gloss layers. The polymerized oil is then applied thickly as a single layer, allowed to fully dry, is buffed smooth with very fine sandpaper, then 0000 steel wool. The surface is wiped clean with a moistened rag, then allowed to dry. A final coat is applied fairly thickly (the oil will smooth itself into a glass-like coating) and allowed to dry for two to three days. Rags soaked with Tung Oil can spontaneously combust (burst into flame).
Pure Tung Oil is a drying oil that’s extracted from the seed of the Tung Oil tree, which is native to China and a few other Asian countries. The oil has been used for centuries as a water-resistant finish for boats and other wooden objects, as well as to finish stone. Pure Tung Oil is an excellent alternative to other drying oils, such as walnut, linseed and soy.On top of producing a beautiful and protective finish, Tung Oil is also a popular choice for projects because it is versatile, easy to use, and environmentally friendly. If you want to know more about Tung Oil and how to use it, then you’ve come to the right place! There are many reasons why people love Tung Oil for their projects, and one of the most popular is its flexible, durable, food safe, and protective waterproof finish that doesn’t mold, darken or go rancid. On a practical note, Tung Oil also dries faster than other oils, making it easier and less time-consuming to apply. From an aesthetic standpoint, Tung Oil also cures to a beautiful matte finish that adds depth to woodgrain, producing an antique-style finish on any surface. As the name suggests, the pure Tung Oil is free of additives and distillates, meaning it doesn’t create a glossy or heavy finish. Pure Tung Oil dries to a honey color. The only difference with dark Tung Oil is that we’ve added a non-carcinogenic and PCB-free resinous hydrocarbon that gives the oil a darker and richer finish.
Carpenters, woodworkers, crafters, and hobbyist alike all love Tung Oil, and over the years they’ve used it as a beautiful and protective finish on a wide number of projects and surfaces. For instance, Tung Oil has been used with fantastic results to finish wood, bamboo, concrete, stone, brick, and even metal surfaces. Tung Oil is a favorite for finishing wood floors, cabinetry, decks, siding, furniture, guitars and other musical instruments, handmade toys, and more. If you’re wondering if it’s the right wood oil for your project, it probably is!
A gallon of Tung Oil will cover 400 square feet of surface. Depending on how porous the surface is, you could need up to 5 coats. To cover a 400-square-foot area, for instance, you would need a little over 2 gallons each of oil and solvent (for thinning) or 5 gallons of our pre-thinned options. The proper application of Tung Oil depends on you starting with a clean and prepared surface. Before you start, make sure there’s no grease, oil, dirt, dust, or other contaminants on the surface. If necessary, start by sanding or stripping the surface to remove any coating or finish that’s already there. Tung Oil can only be applied to bare surfaces or over another coat of Tung Oil. Follow that up by cleaning the surface with trisodium phosphate. Sand the surface one more time with 150-grit sandpaper, and then vacuum well to remove all dust.
A thinner will make the Tung Oil easier to apply, faster to dry, and will improve penetration. The only time you shouldn’t thin the oil first is if you’re applying it to weathered wood, concrete, old and unfinished wood floors, or other highly absorbent surfaces. To thin the oil, combine it with equal parts Citrus Solvent, mineral spirits, or Odorless Mineral Spirits before application. You could also choose one of our pre-thinned options, Half & Half or Dark Half, to use straight out of the bottle. You can apply the Tung Oil with a natural bristle brush, a sponge brush, or a soft and lint-free rag. Apply the oil liberally to the surface. Unlike varnish, which sits on top of the wood, the goal with Tung Oil is to thoroughly saturate the wood cells. When you’ve applied the first coat, let the oil absorb. After the first coat has absorbed, apply a second coat. Continue this process of applying coats, waiting 40 minutes between coats if necessary, until over 80 percent of the surface stays glossy for at least 40 minutes. This means the wood cells have been saturated and you can move to the next step. Decorative items may need two to four coats, while functional surfaces that will be handled, used, or walked on will need a minimum of three to five. After you’ve applied multiple coats and the wood won’t absorb any more Tung Oil, use a clean rag to wipe the surface. If there are any puddles of oil on the surface, mop them up with the rags. This is important as you don’t want the Tung Oil to start curing on the surface.
At this point, your surface is fully saturated. However, the pure Tung Oil will settle inside the wood/material overnight on through the next day. To get the best finish we recommend applying one or two more coats of the oil, following the instructions previously stated, after this period of waiting. Make sure to wipe up oil that’s on the surface that does not absorb. Hang oil-soaked rags separately outside to dry before disposing. From here, the oil will need a week to 10 days to start curing, and 15 days to 30 days to fully cure. Do not put the Tung Oiled object in direct sunlight for an extended period of time. For the first 10 days of curing, check and wipe up any Tung Oil that may seep to the surface. During this curing time, you can walk on floors with clean shoes, but avoid placing heavy objects on the floor or walking on it with dirty shoes. Tip: put old rags under your shoes to walk across the surface no matter what shoes you’re wearing. There are no other sealers or protective products needed on top of your Tung Oil. Tung Oil naturally seals, waterproofs, and protects your surfaces.

Pure Tung Oil is easy to clean. For your floors or other wooden objects, just simply use hot water and standard dish soap.
Surfaces that are used often or walked on frequently may need some maintenance to revive their look and add more protection. To do this, simply mix 2 parts thinner to 1 part Tung Oil and wipe down your surfaces. Allow time to dry as necessary.Pure Tung Oil has been popular for thousands of years, thanks to the protective and waterproof finish it creates on wood and other porous surfaces. These days, pure Tung Oil is also gaining momentum because it’s non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and food safe, meaning it’s ideal for kitchenware, butcher block, cutting boards, countertops, and even toys.Applying Tung Oil is easy and effective! The main tips to remember are: don’t leave excess oil on the surface during the curing phase, no sanding necessary between coats, no other sealer or topcoats needed and use 2 parts thinner to 1 part Tung Oil for maintenance.
Many people think Tung Oil only just emerged in 1965, when Homer Formsby put his special tung-oil based formulation on the market. While we undoubtedly owe a lot to Formsby for popularizing this incredible oil, his product was a slight reinvention of an oil first found in writings by Confucius way back in 500 B.C. There’s a reason Tung Oil is also known as China wood oil. The Chinese have long turned to the Tung Oil nut as a treatment for a variety of ailments, as well as a waterproofing agent for their handmade boats. Today, we’re able to use this ancient “secret” to give all kinds of woodworking crafts and up-cycled furniture a gorgeous new look. While it’s true it takes Tung Oil a little longer to dry than lesser oils and you’ll need to put in a little more effort to achieve the perfect finish, all that time on the front end means a long-lasting, more brilliant result you’ll enjoy for years to come. Remember, fast-drying oils leave you no time to correct mistakes, and that’s a lot of pressure when you value quality over speed. If you process flax seeds you get linseed oil, a compound with a storied history almost as long as the one associated with Tung Oil, but the comparisons stop there. While linseed oil may be cheaper, it also has added metal compounds and dries faster. The latter may seem like a good thing, but it can make an even finish harder to come by unless you’re committed to working at a furious pace.
Tung Oil nuts are actually the seeds inside the fruit of the tung tree. They fall into a category called “drupes,” which also includes other fleshy fruits surrounding a “pit” or shelled seed, such as cherries, plums, peaches and even almonds and pecans. It’s not at all unusual for someone who has a tree nut allergy to be perfectly fine with consuming drupes. Peanuts, by the way, are technically legumes. Even if you can’t eat peanut butter, you may be able to safely enjoy coconut, peaches, pistachios and yes, even Tung Oil nuts and the resulting oil.
Tung Oil is an exotic, naturally drying oil imported from South America and China. It is recognized by craftsmen to be the ultimate drying oil for all fine woods, furniture and antiques. Unlike other finishes that sit on the wood’s surface, Tung Oil penetrates deep into wood fibers, cures, and actually becomes part of the wood. It forms a low gloss hand rubbed finish that’s not only beautiful, but remarkably durable. Resistance to moisture and alcoholic drinks is truly amazing.Since Tung Oil works by penetrating the wood’s surface; it must be used on unfinished or bare woods and surfaces where the old finish has been removed.
Tung Oil will clean your wood to a natural, brilliant shine. Tung Oil is an exotic, naturally drying oil imported from South America and China and is recognized by craftsmen to be the "ultimate" drying oil for all fine woods. Unlike other finishes that sit on the woods surface, Tung Oil penetrates deep into wood fibers, cures, and actually becomes part of the wood. It forms a low gloss "hand rubbed" finish that's not only beautiful, but remarkably durable. Resistance to moisture and alcoholic drinks is truly amazing. The oil is not thinned or diluted, but 100% pure Tung Oil.Tung Oil is a plant-based oil used as a wood finish. It is clear, quick-drying, and penetrates the grain to enhance and protect the wood. It’s one of the oldest and most popular wood finishes in the world and is derived from the seeds of the Tung Oil tree in Eastern Asia. Tung Oil has become a staple among fine furniture craftsmen in the United States and beyond. It is eco-friendly, non-toxic, and food-safe.Vermont Furniture Designs uses Tung Oil on maple furniture as an alternative to linseed oil. Due to the dense grain of maple, linseed oil doesn’t penetrate well and can result in a blotchy appearance. Tung Oil has no issues penetrating the dense maple grain, and because it dries clear, it’s a great finish for lighter colored woods. Tung Oil is available as a finish on cherry and walnut, as well, upon request.
Similarly to linseed Tung Oil, it is difficult to find furniture that is made with raw or 100% pure Tung Oil. Many craftsmen will use boiled or polymerized Tung Oil, and it’s also common for manufacturers to mislabel products as Tung Oil when they’re not. If you’re interested in a Tung Oil finish, it’s worth doing a bit of digging to understand exactly what finish is being used and what it’s comprised of.Tung Oil is the main raw material for the manufacture of paints and inks. It is widely used as waterproof, anti-corrosion and anti-rust paint for construction, machinery, weapons, vehicles, boats, fishing gear and electrical appliances. It can also be used to make tarpaulins, oil paper, soap, pesticides and vomiting agents for medicine. Insecticides, etc.Drying oils such as soybean oil, linseed oil, Tung Oil harden to a tough, solid film after a more or long time of exposure to air. Their components cross-link and polymerize by the action of oxygen at more or less high temperature in presence of oxidation promotors. Drying oils are used to obtain linoleum, paints, and some varnishes. Some applications are also reviewed elsewhere.
Their use has declined over the time, as they have been replaced by PVC for floor covering or by alkyd resins and other binders for paints and varnishes, ompletely natural and renewable, pure Tung Oil has gained recent popularity among the environmentally conscious. Inherently resistant to disease and insects, Tung Oil trees require no fungicides or pesticides. Tung Oil nut byproducts can be used for mulch. During World War II the Chinese figured out how to use Tung Oil as motor fuel.
Tung Oil in america; Just prior to the outbreak of WWII, Tung Oil was declared a strategic item for defense use, so the government aided growers to help them to produce more and better trees. During the war, all ammunition was coated with Tung Oil and products containing Tung Oil painted all ships. Not only were government support programs available for US growers, but the government also assisted foreign plantings in South America, particularly Argentina. There was an embargo on Chinese Tung Oil at the time, making domestic oil profitable. The Pan American Tung Oil Research and Development League was formed between Tung Oil producers in Amercica and Argentina to work jointly on research and development and to pool Tung Oil from both countries to provide consistent supplies to U.S. consumers.Hurricanes Betsy (1965) and Camille (1969) dealt the final blows to the Tung Oil plantations in southern Mississippi and eastern Louisiana. Camille cut Tung Oil production in the U.S. by over half. Since those growers were eligible for government disaster compensation, they took the money and went out of the Tung Oil business and into other agricultural production. In addition, by the late 1960’s many of the US Tung Oil mills had closed due to the fact that importing Tung Oil from Argentina had become cheaper than producing it in the states.
What was thought to be the savior of the Tung Oil industry – a genetic breakthrough that produced late-blooming varieties capable of escaping late spring freezes. Unfortunately, there was little incentive for replanting. Because oil is the only economically significant product of the Tung Oil tree. It cannot be grown for fiber, meal or fertilizer. That, along with the fact that domestic consumption declined nearly 50% between 1955 and 1970 spelled the end of commercial Tung Oil production in the U.S.Tung Oil tree is a competitive tree widely introduced in tropical and subtropical regions for its use in the tungoil industry. It has escaped from cultivation and become naturalized in natural habitats where it replaces native vegetation and competes for space, water, light, and nutrients. V. fordii has the potential to grow very rapidly, principally in moist and well-drained soils, forming dense stands.
Deliberate breeding of this species has yielded frost-hardy varieties, facilitating the expansion of the tree into new habitats. Currently, Tung Oil tree is listed as a weed in South Africa, the USA and Australia and invasive in Florida and the Dominican Republic
Tung Oil extracted from the seed are used in the manufacture of lacquers, varnishes, paints, linoleum, oilcloth, resins, artificial leather, felt-base floor coverings, and in greases, brake-linings and cleaning and polishing compounds. This tree species is also used as an ornamental landscape plant.
Tung Oil is obtained from the nuts of two species of trees, Aleurites fordii and Aleurites montana. This oil, originally obtained from China, is also known as China wood oil and is now cultivated in the USA, Argentina, China and the north-east province of India. It is characterised by the presence of ?-eleostearic acid. Tung Oil is more viscous than other common vegetable oils. The characteristic properties, which have made this oil so valuable in modern varnish manufacture, are its unique drying speed and its excellent water resistance. It has also good alkali and chemical resistance. The use of raw Tung Oil in paints is limited by its tendency to wrinkle on drying. It is advisable therefore, partly to replace Tung Oil with other oils such as linseed, soybean, perilla and dehydrated castor oil.

Tung Oil is a pure natural non-toxic oil and is completely free from solvent. It has good penetration into all types of timber without leaving a film and its special properties make it highly resistant to water, alcohol and food stuffs. It is additive free and safe for use in contact with food. It forms a hard wearing finish making it suitable for kitchen work surfaces, chopping boards and interior wood work.
The surface must be clean, bare and sanded smooth and free of all traces of wax. Pure Tung Oil will bring out the natural colour of wood but if required the colour of the wood may be changed using Rustins Wood Dye. Always carry out test on a small area to assess the colour of the oil. If natural open-grain is not required then use Rustins Grain Filler before oiling.Tung Oil showed a rapid oxygen uptake in the first 3h up to 4.1% due to the formation of peroxides and hydroperoxides.Referred to by Confucius as early as 400 BC and also known as China Wood Oil, Tung Oil is believed by many to be the finest natural wood finish in the world. It is extracted from the nuts of the Tung Tree - Aleurites fordii - native to east Asia. Legend has it that the Great Wall Of China was sealed with Tung Oil. It is a component of many products marketed as Tung Oil but which are usually extended with other cheaper non-drying oils and consequently have to contain added toxic dryers and anti-fungals.
Tung Oil is a tree nut oil which polymerises naturally and cures to a tough, buffable, water resistant, beautiful finish which patinates better than skin finishes. Pure Tung Oil is safe for use on wooden toys (EN71 compliant) and kitchen woodwork which contacts foodstuffs.Tung Oil seeps into the grain of the wood, giving it a perpetual wet look that highly accentualizes the grain of the wood, giving the wood a rich, warm color.Tung Oil provides a relatively hard surface finish that provides a water-resistant finish that is impervious to dust, alcohol, acetone (nail polish remover), and various acids such as fruit and vegetable acids (orange juice). In its pure form, Tung Oil is a non-toxic and food-safe finish that is ideal for surfaces that come into contact with food.Tung Oil is superior hard oil to care and protect unfinished and bare woods. 100% natural, environmentally friendly and ideal for use on food contact objects.
Matt finish resistant to heat, water, alcohol, acids and alkalis. Nourishes, harden and waterproofs allowing to breathe, protect from mold and fungi. Do not significantly change the original color of the wood and will not darken. Durable hard and flexible finishing, applicable for indoor and outdoor. Perfect for waterproofing stone, concrete and cement. Drying oil, polymerizes (hardens) by auto-oxidation upon exposure to air. Added as hardener, "improver" and Bio drier for Linceed Oil, Teak Oil etc. Cures faster in warm environments. Direct sunlight can cause spontaneous polymerization and “frost effect"Tung Oil is effective sealing waterproofing agent for paper, fabric, stone and plasters. It is a Bio replacement for polyurethanes and other potentially dangerous sealants / varnishes. If you use Tung Oil with pine tar, this combination can give any wood product a beautiful glow. It allows the natural beauty of the wood product to shine through. But it is not the only purpose of the oil as it also puts extra protection to the product.
Tung Oil or Chinese wood oil is taken from the seeds of the Tung Oil tree. The oil has small molecules allowing it to penetrate deeper into the wood to offer further protection against cracking. It also adds extra protection against moisture.
You may use Tung Oil to treat hardwoods, like mahogany. You may combine it with linseed oil and pine tar. This oil can be applied to any wood types, like terraces, boats, doors, etc.The best thing about Tung Oil is that it can give you a deep brown color. Furthermore, it is simple to apply. However, it is best that you wet sanded the mixture to accentuate the grain patterns.
Adding Chinese wood oil to pine tar will make it easier to apply to the wood surface. It also allows the surface to dry faster. However, Tung Oil can offer better resistance to water. Then again, it can take a week or two to complete the project. If you are willing to wait for two weeks, at least, then use Tung Oil.
Furniture repairing with Tung Oil is a safe and inexpensive method of restoring wooden furniture. It is non-toxic and easy to use, but is flammable like other oils. Tung Oil is a penetrating oil that hardens and insulates wood and provides a clean coating for the wood. It has a slight shade of yellow that will not add color but increase the luster of the wood. Tung Oil can be purchased in pure form, 100% or diluted form. The diluted product is called 'Tung Oil Finish'.Tung is a fast-growing deciduous tree species and can grow to 40 ft in height, with smooth bark and soft wood. Leaves are heart shaped, sometimes lobed, dark green and up to 6 or more inches wide. Flowers are produced in early spring, before foliage. Blooms are attractive, white with a rose-colored center and are borne in clusters from terminal shoots from the previous growing season. Fruits are spherical or pear-shaped, green to purple at maturity and contain 4 to 5 seeds. Seeds have a hard shell and a large endosperm from which Tung Oil is extracted. Tung Oil is largely comprised of 75%–80% ?-elaeo stearic, 15% oleic, and circa 4% palmitic oils. All parts of the Tung Oil trees are poisonous, and the seeds are highly toxic to humans and animals.Tung Oil has been used as a wood preservative in China for centuries, it is also the main ingredient of many oil based varnishes.
Tung Oil will enrich the grain and form a hard, water repelling layer approximately 5mm deep (deeper if you let it down with a bit of camellia oil). Be sure to oil both sides of the board so that you don't introduce cupping.Pure natural Tung Oil does take time to dry (no chemical accelerants), but has the advantage of being non toxic and food safe. We recommend giving it a day or two between coats, then a week before applying anything over the top of it.You can seal oiled timber with a couple of coats of shellac and then apply varnish or wax over the top for additional protection. The source of Tung Oil is a nut, and people with nut allergies have been known to suffer adverse reactions with contact or odour of Tung Oil. Pure Tung Oil is water and alkali resistant offering a protective barrier. A Pure Tung Oil finish will not darken with age as other finishes will. It resists marring, penetrates well, remains elastic and unlikely to craze. Tung Oil builds quickly, consolidates the wood surface and leaves a ansparent matte finish. Pure Tung Oil finish will not mildew or bleed like linseed oil when dry which makes it an excellent candidate for outdoor finishes. It should be kept in an airtight container with minimum air space. Pure Tung Oil contains no thinners or driers and has a light nutty odour. A Pure Tung Oil finish mixed with Citrus Solvent is a all natural organic finish that is environmentally safe and food safe.
Tung Oil is a varnish. Squeezed from Tung Oil nuts (Aleurites fordii), a renewable resource, it oxidizes on exposure to air and becomes a solid resin by polymerization. It has been used for at least a millennium in China in its raw state - it lasts a long time. Like shellac it seals wood well against humidity changes, is easy to apply with a brush, and repairs easily. It brings out he natural colour of wood better than shellac. But, it's more expensive, requires more coats, and is harder to put a ine polish on. The raw oil contains poisonous toxins, but these are apparently destroyed by the drying process - the finish is FDA-rated food-safe. 100% Tung Oil is slow drying and produces a matte finish. It isn't as hard as polymerised Tung Oil when it dries.
Polymerised Tung Oil isn't a synthetic its generally heated Tung Oil, but some manufactures laiming their product is pyre Tung Oil will use chemicals. Tung Oil polymerizes naturally as it dries, but the heating process to polymerize Tung Oil takes care of the polymerizing in advance so the polymerized Tung Oil will dry faster and harder and is more viscous. Polymerised Tung Oil gives a gloss finish. In theory its similar to raw linseed oil and boiled linseed oil but they are completely different types of oils. In a nutshell (pardon the pun) 100% Tung Oil is good but slow drying and has a natural almost matte finish.Polymerised Tung Oil dries much quicker, is harder and has a gloss finish. However the polymerising process requires a pressurised heat process and therefore enuine naturally polymerised Tung Oil is not that easy to find.Chinawood oil is another name for Tung Oil. Chinawood Deck Oil is polymerised but beware of chemicals and toxic additives used instead of the natural heat process.
