TURPINAL 4NL

CAS NUMBER: 3794-83-0

EC NUMBER: 223-267-7

MOLECULAR FORMULA: C2H8Na4O7P2

DESCRIPTION:

Turpinal 4NL provides hair damage control in bleaching/colouring process.
Turpinal 4NL has been developed for the personal care industry in order to answer the need for high purity chemicals with strong chelation properties.
Turpinal 4NL Uses range from peroxide stabilization to bar soap oxidation prevention.
Turpinal 4NL products are high purity grades of etidronic acid and sodium etidronate which are suitable for use in cosmetics or any applications requiring a very low metal content.

The high purity of Turpinal 4NL is guaranteed by thorough quality control procedures.
Moreover, the certificate of analysis accompanying each batch contains detailed information covering chemical purity and trace metal content.
Turpinal 4NL is respectively the acid form and the tetra sodium salt of etidronic acid.
Turpinal 4NL is colorless to slightly yellow liquids with a neutral odor.
Turpinal 4NL is the tetrasodium powder form of etidronic acid.

Turpinal 4NL can be mixed with water in all ratios and have a strong complexing capacity in relation to polyvalent cations.
The excellent complexing capacity for metals is exploited for the stabilization of H2O2-containing preparations and other preparations with active oxygen.
Turpinal 4NL is also suited for application in mercaptan.
Turpinal 4NL is recommended that Turpinal® be added during production with a concentration of 0.1 – 2% with reference to the finished preparation.

Turpinal 4NL is one of the salts of etidronic acid, a chelating agent.
Chelating agents can sequester (grab onto) free metal ions or minerals.
The analogy we like the most is to describe this material as a lobster, with claws closing around the minerals as they float past in the water.
Removing free metal ions or minerals has several benefits.

Turpinal 4NL ensures successful saponification and stabilises formulas by acting as an antioxidant and therefore preventing changes in colour, texture, and fragrance.
Turpinal 4NL also reduces the hardness of water, providing a soft feel to the skin.
Turpinal 4NL is a close cousin of EDTA.
Turpinal 4NL is used in cosmetics as a chelator and stabilizer.

Turpinal 4NL allows products to remain stable both in terms of color and consistency.
Turpinal 4NL fights as a chelator against limestone which can limit the action of surfactants.
Turpinal 4NL is like the poorly biodegradable EDTA.
In manufacturing, Turpinal 4NL is used in calcium and sodium compounds to improve stability in pharmaceutical products, detergents, liquid soaps, shampoos, agricultural chemical sprays, oil emulsion devices, contact lens cleaners and cosmetics.

Turpinal 4NL is also used in certain blood collection tubes used by medical laboratories.
Turpinal 4NL is recommended for alkaline products, like most handcrafted soap (and can also be used in creams and lotions).
Turpinal 4NL works synergistically with your preservative to improve preservative efficacy.
In soaps, Turpinal 4NL can counteract the defoaming action of hardness ions, reducing soap scum and improving lather.

APPLICATION:

-In the stabilization of peroxide bonds, in alkaline media specifically
-As a chelant in hair cosmetics containing mercaptan groups, i.e. thioglycolic acid, thiolactic acid
-As a means of limiting hair damage caused by bleaching or colouring
-In the stabilization of bar soaps, where Turpinal 4NL is used as antioxidant and prevents discolouration and rancidity, in particular under the influence of day light
-In the stabilization of fragrances, which would otherwise lose their strength over time during storage of cosmetic formulations.

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES:

-Physical state: liquid
-Color: Colorless.
-Odor: Odorless.
-Odor threshold: Not applicable.
-pH: 10 = 12 at 25 °C at 10 g/l
-Flash point: > 93,8 °C
-Flammability (solid, gas): Non=flammable.

FUNCTION:

Turpinal 4NL is a water-soluble ingredient used as a chelating agent in cosmetics and personal care products because of its ability to sequester metal ions and allow them to remain in formulas but lose their ability to react with other ingredients.
Turpinal 4NL is used in shampoos, shower gels, and hair conditioners.

-Chelating agent: Reacts and forms complexes with metal ions which could affect the stability and/or appearance of cosmetic products
-Emulsion Stabilizer: Aids the emulsification process and improves emulsion stability and shelf life
-Viscosity control agent: Increases or decreases the viscosity of cosmetics

USES:

-Ideally suited for Personal Care and Cosmetic applications.
-Incorporate at low levels in bar soap and hair care preparations.
-Excellent chelating agent for transition metals such as iron, copper, manganese and zinc. Stable in oxygen bleaching conditions.
-High purity product is made and tested to ensure high quality requirements are consistently met.
-This pH 11 grade is best suited for pH neutral to higher alkaline formulations.
