Methyl cellulose
Cellulose ethers are derivatives of the natural product cellulose.
Depending on the desired viscosity of the final product cellulose from cotton linters or from wood pulp is used. We are only using wood  pulp from manufacturers who are certified according to sustainable management of the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).

Methyl cellulose (MC) can be seen as a generic term for mixed etherification cellulose ethers. Common to these cellulose ethers is the methoxylation. Additionally, the conversation can be achieved either with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide.

The following final products are the result:

Hostapur OSB
Hostapur OSB is a powerful air entraining, wetting and plasticizing agent for mineral based dry premixed plasters, renderings and trowelling compounds.
Hostapur OSB
Thermal insulation render containing Hostapur OSB
Hostapur OSB forms air pores with excellent stability, reduces shrinkage particularly of cement/cement-lime based mortar systems and prevents formation of cracks. Other advantages are the higher frost resistance and reduced tendency of efflorescence in hardened mortar. Hostapur OSB leads to better wetting and dispersion of the building materials mixtures (e. g. of machine applied plasters and renderings), reduces tackiness and improves workability and pumpability of wet mortars.

The recommended concentration should be 0.005 – 0.05 % by weight, calculated on dry mortar.

Tylovis SE 7
Tylovis SE 7 is a starch ether especially for dry mixed mortars like adhesives, plasters and trowelling compounds. It gives higher thickening, better slip and sag resistance as well as easy workability.
Tylovis SE 7
Perfect wetting capability by using Tylovis SE 7
Tylovis SE 7 is typically used together with Tylose MC grades in such building products. It is also compatible with all common dry mixed mortar additives, e.g. air entraining, dispersing and hydrophobic agents. In adhesives and trowelling compounds, which contain higher dosages of methyl cellulose, the stickiness and skin formation can be reduced by addition of Tylovis SE 7.

The recommended concentration should be 0.005 – 0.1 % by weight, calculated on dry mortar.

Tylovis EP 28
Tylovis EP 28 is a slightly air-entraining dispersing and wetting surfactant for cement, lime and gypsum based plasters, renders, mortars and trowelling compounds.
Tylovis EP 28
Tylovis EP 28 improves the workability of trowelling compounds
Tylovis EP 28 also has a some slight air-entraining property. It improves workability, smoothness, plasticity and trowelling as well as levelling behaviour of mortars and plasters. Fine particles of inorganic binders and pigments are much better dispersed throughout mixtures by addition of Tylovis EP 28.

It is highly recommended for gypsum based plasters as it reduces the stickiness of the first levelling and extends working time especially during the final stage.

Tylovis EP 28 is compatible with Tylose MC and HEC grades as well as anionic and non-ionic surfactants. The recommended concentration should be 0.01 – 0.05 % by weight, calculated on the dry mixed mortar.

BUILDING MATERIALS
Tylose MC products are essential elements of many construction materials.
The laying of tiles utilizing the thin bed process and the processing of mortars in continuously working plastering machines is only possible with the use of Tylose MC.
In building material systems Tylose MC controls the water retention and the consistency, whilst at the same time Tylose MC products increase the homogeneity and stability of all types of mortar.

Construction materials are optimised with the following properties of Tylose:
Water retention
Consistency control
Adhesion improvement
Stabilising of air pores
Improvement of workability
Building materials
For dry mortars we offer modified and non-modified Tylose grades of both MHEC and MHPC.

1. CEMENT ADHESIVES
Cementitious thin bed adhesives are used to adhere ceramic tiles, to build walls of aerated concrete or lime stone bricks and to install exterior insulating finishing systems (EIFS).
Cement adhesives
They offer an easy and light workability, a high efficiency and guarantee a long durability.

Cement tile adhesives have to be easy to trowel. They must provide long embedding time, high slip resistance and sufficient adhesion strength. These properties can be influenced by Tylose MC. Adhesives for block laying are used to build up walls of aerated concrete blocks, sand-lime bricks or standard bricks. EIFS adhesives ensure an excellent bond between substrate and insulating boards. Tylose MC improves the workability of EIFS adhesives and increases both adhesion and sag resistance.

PAINTS
There are many reasons why Tylose is an important component in water based paints for ceilings, walls and facades.
Paints
Application of paint should be smooth and easy, whilst spatter must be kept to a minimum. To achieve these attributes only a small amount of Tylose is necessary. Depending on the system being used, a concentration of 0.2 % - 0.5 % is typically required. The choice of Tylose types depends on the application and requirements. The most commonly used Tylose types in coating materials are Tylose HS and Tylose H.

Polymerisation
Tylose is a protective colloid in emulsion and suspension polymerisation.
It stabilises the emulsions/suspensions and prevents them from coalescence. In emulsion polymerisation (mainly vinyl acetate based) Tylose HEC partly co-polymerises with the monomers (grafting) which contributes to important properties of the latices. In suspension polymerisation Tylose influences the size and porosity of the particles.

Emulsion polymerisation is widely used for the production of aqueous polymer emulsions based on ethylene derived compounds. The variety of polymers is huge due to a large number of monomers which can be combined in different ratios. Tylose HEC, however is typically used for the polymerisation of vinyl acetate, acrylic and vinyl acrylic copolymer latices, which are commonly applied as binders in paints, adhesives and concrete, as well as in many other applications.

Tylose HEC, however is typically used for the polymerisation of vinyl acetate, acrylic and vinyl acrylic copolymer latices, which are commonly applied as binders in paints, adhesives and concrete, as well as in many other applications. SE Tylose offers a broad range of grades of different viscosity levels and with different MS In the emulsion polymerisation process, Tylose plays an important role – it acts as protective colloid and prevents the emulsions from coalescence. This is achieved by the stabilisation of the emulsified polymer particles. Tylose molecules form hydrated shells surrounding the polymer droplets and thus inhibit their interaction. Tylose is adsorbed on as well as grafted to the polymer particles. The grafting in particular enhances the mechanical, chemical and physical stability of the latex and reduces undesired large particles, so called grit, to a minimum. The extend of stabilisation is mainly dependent on the molar degree of substitution (MS) of the Tylose HEC, which represents the number of oxyethyl substituents per anhydroglucose unit of Tylose, and the concentration of Tylose. Generally, the higher the MS and concentration, the better is the stabilisation. However, if the concentration is too high, there can be destabilising effects due to crosslinking reactions of Tylose HEC with highly reactive acrylic compounds. As a consequence of this, with increasing amount of acrylic monomers in the reaction, the dosage of Tylose is recommended to be reduced and grades with a lower MS should be preferred. Typical concentrations of Tylose are 1 – 3 % by weight of monomers (BOM) in vinyl acetate and vinyl acrylic copolymers. In pure acrylic latices, 0.1 – 0.2 % of Tylose BOM is recommended

Influence of Tylose HEC on the Latex Viscosity

Besides the specific latex characteristics, such as particle size distribution and solids content, the latex viscosity also depends on the amount of grafted and dissolved HEC. Most important in this regard is the Tylose concentration and the MS. A high MS encourages grafting reactions which lead to higher latex viscosities. Higher concentrations of Tylose HEC lead to higher grafting as well as to higher concentrations of dissolved Tylose. Since acrylic monomers are more reactive than vinylic monomers towards grafting, the influence of Tylose on the viscosities of vinyl acrylic and homo acrylic emulsions is higher than on pure vinylic polymers. The original viscosity level of Tylose, indicating its molecular weight, is a minor factor, since a significant part of HEC which is not grafted, undergoes a degradation process during the reaction.

Influence of Tylose HEC on the Particle Size Distribution

The particle size distribution (PSD) influences important properties of the latex, such as stability and rheology which in turn affect the properties of the final product. For example the brightness of an architectural paint is highly dependent on the particle size distribution of the applied latex. The main factors of influence on PSD are the concentration and MS of Tylose used. Higher MS and higher concentrations of Tylose lead to higher PSD.
