VISCOGEL ED

APPLICATIONS

Viscogel ED is used in a wide range of manufacturing processes for architectural paints, industrial finishes, anti-corrosive paints, road marking paints, primers, bitouminous undercoates, wood stains, to give the desired rheological control to the system.

Typical applications of Viscogel EDl are as follows:

Coatings/Paints
Modifiers that provide controllable thixotropy
Thickening
Anti-settling

Viscogel ED has flow, levelling and anti-sagging properties in solvent and solvent-free coating systems.
Suitable grades of Viscogel EDare available for low, medium and high polarity coating systems.

Typical benefits of Viscogel ED include:

Anti-settling – allowing for homogeneous pigment dispersion and distribution
Controlled surface levelling and coating thickness
Adjustable and reproducible thixotropic control at a wide temperature range
In-can storage stability
Easy to incorporate grades which do not require activation through additives, heat or shear
Laviosa’s Laviothix and Laviokoll brands cater for the water-based coatings market.

Viscogel ED is used in printing inks.
Viscogel ED is used in printing inks to adjust rheological properties, especially in high-speed printing inks.
For example, Viscogel ED is commonly used in lithographic inks for newspapers and letterheads.

Typical benefits of Viscogel ED include:

Improved flow and consistency
Improved printing resolutions
Lubricants
Viscogel ED thickeners are suitable for medium- to high-viscosity-index mineral oils, synthetic oils and other organic fluids for rheology control.

Lubricants and greases produced with Viscogel ED offer the following benefits:

Less susceptible to temperature fluctuations – do not melt a high-temperatures or harden at low temperatures
Water resistance
Improved adhesion to metals
Self Activating grades

As well as a range of traditional, pre-gel grades, Viscogel ED is available in self-activating grades for low, medium, and high polarity systems.
These require relatively low mechanical energy to disperse and do not require chemical activation.
In addition, self-activating Viscogel ED grades can be added as dry powder during most stages of the manufacturing process.
As a result, the incorporation procedure is simplified, reducing the possibility of mistakes and allowing for post batch adjustment or correction.

Viscogel ED shows particularly good performance in aliphatic mineral spirits and aromatics.
Low polarity binders like alkyds and terpenes, petroleum derivatives and styrene-butadiene rubbers are also compatible with Viscogel ED.
Viscogel ED is a rheological additive for solvent-borne systems of low to medium polarity.

Viscogel ED provides thixotropic effect, sag control, excellent levelling and prevents pigments from long-term storage settling.
The nature of Viscogel ED is a bentonite clay, organically modified with a quaternary alkylammonium compound.
Unlike most of the other conventional organoclays, Viscogel ED is self-activating and easily dispersible, hence simple and convenient to use.
