Zinc Omadine is the pyrithione complexes of zinc bromide, in the early 1930s, was already synthesized and used as a topical antifungal or antibacterial agent.
At room temperature it is white to yellow crystalline powder. Slight characteristic odor, insoluble in water.
A pH optimum range of 4.5 to 9.5; mass fraction of 10% suspension pH3.6.
Zinc Omadine react with cationic and non-ionic surfactants forming insoluble precipitate, unstable in the light and oxidizer, when at higher temperatures ,it is not stable to acids and bases .

Zinc Omadine is not compatible with EDTA, non-ionic surfactants make it partially deactivated. When with the presence of heavy metals, chelation or anti-sequestration will occur, and these chelates are insoluble in water.
Zinc Omadine is the trade name for Zinc Omadine, a coordination complex formed between zinc ions and an organic ligand derived from 2-mercaptopyridine-N-oxide.
Zinc Omadine is a white to off-white powder that is only slightly soluble in water but readily disperses in surfactant systems such as shampoos and cosmetic formulations.

Because of its specific chemical structure, it is highly effective at disrupting the metabolism and cell membranes of certain fungi and bacteria while remaining usable at very low concentrations.
Zinc Omadine is best known as an antimicrobial and antifungal active ingredient that helps control dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and certain scalp irritations.
It works by interfering with energy production and ion transport in microorganisms, which slows their growth and eventually reduces their population on the skin or scalp.

Thanks to this targeted activity, it can significantly decrease the presence of Malassezia yeast species that are closely associated with dandruff formation.
Zinc Omadine is not limited to personal care products and is also used as a preservative or biocidal agent in industrial and household applications.
In coatings, plastics, sealants, and other materials, it helps prevent the growth of mold, algae, and bacteria on surfaces that are exposed to moisture or humid environments.

This protective effect extends the service life of products and helps maintain their appearance, cleanliness, and functional performance.
From a chemical standpoint, Zinc Omadine is valued because it remains stable under typical formulation conditions and can be incorporated into a wide variety of liquid and solid systems.
Its compatibility with surfactants, emulsifiers, and common cosmetic ingredients allows formulators to design shampoos, creams, and lotions that deliver reliable antimicrobial benefits.

These characteristics have made Zinc Omadine one of the most widely recognized and frequently used zinc-based antimicrobial agents in both cosmetic and technical markets.
Zinc Omadine is a coordination complex of zinc and pyrithione that has antimicrobial and anticancer activities.
Zinc Omadine is active against the bacteria E. coli, S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, A. baumannii, P. aeruginosa, E. faecium, E. faecalis, and E. cloacae (MICs = 1-4 μg/ml) and the fungus P. ovale when used at concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 10 μg/ml.

Zinc Omadine reduces tumor growth in an SCC-4 mouse xenograft model when administered at a dose of 1 mg/kg per week for six weeks.
Formulations containing Zinc Omadine have been used in the treatment of dandruff.
Zinc Omadine is extremely effective in eliminating the fungi, Malassezia spp., which is directly linked to the scalp condition, dandruff.

An important characteristic of this molecule is that it is efficacious against numerous other organisms beyond Malassezia, including the various bacteria species associated with producing odor on the skin.
The Zinc Omadine ligands, which are formally monoanions, are chelated to Zn2+ via oxygen and sulfur centers.
In the crystalline state, Zinc Omadine exists as a centrosymmetric dimer (see figure), where each zinc is bonded to two sulfur and three oxygen centers.

In solution, however, the dimers dissociate via scission of one Zn-O bond.
This compound was first described in the 1930s.
Zinc Omadine is the conjugate base derived from 2-mercaptopyridine-N-oxide (CAS# 1121-31-9), a derivative of pyridine-N-oxide.

Zinc Omadine is the active ingredient in several shampoos used to control dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis and is also effective in the therapy of tinea versicolor.
Zinc Omadine remains unclear whether the beneficial effects are caused by an antiproliferative or antimicrobial effect or both.
It is substantive to the hair, allowing continued therapeutic effect after washing.

Zinc Omadine is the most popular anti-dandruff ingredient in the world, offering bactericide-fungicide efficacy in shampoos, conditioners and leave-on products.
Zinc Omadine products have been providing dandruff relief and improved scalp health for over 50 years.
Zinc Omadine is a highly active, broad-spectrum zinc complex of pyrithione.

Used as a dry film and in-can preservative for water-based paints and as a dry film preservative for marine antifouling paints.
Offers very good protection against microbial growth including bacteria, fungi and algae.
Zinc Omadine 48% Dispersion Antimicrobial is an off-white 48% aqueous dispersion.

Zinc Omadine is a mixture in water of very fine particles of Zinc Omadine, a dispersant, and a viscosity control agent.
Zinc Omadine Dispersion Antimicrobial inhibits the growth of a broad spectrum of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
It also inhibits the growth of fungi, yeast, mold, and algae.

Zinc Omadine is a coordination complex of zinc.
It has fungistatic (inhibiting the division of fungal cells) and bacteriostatic (inhibiting bacterial cell division) properties and is used in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff.

Zinc Omadine is the most popular anti-dandruff ingredient in the world offering bactericide-fungicide efficacy in shampoos, conditioners and leave-on products.
Zinc Omadine products have been providing dandruff relief and improved scalp health for over 50 years.

Melting point: >300°C
storage temp.: Hygroscopic, -20°C Freezer, Under inert atmosphere
solubility: Aqueous Acid (Slightly, Heated, Sonicated)
form: Solid
color: White to Beige
Stability: Hygroscopic

Zinc Omadine concentration of up to 2% is allowed for products when they are formulated to be applied and then washed off after brief exposure.
Alternatively, up to 0.25 percent when formulated to be left on the skin or scalp.
Zinc Omadine acts as an anti-dandruff and antimicrobial agent.

Suitable for personal cleansing with bar soaps.
Zinc Omadine is an effective bactericidal and/ or bacteriostatic active against specific bacteria linked to odor.
Zinc Omadine UFPS is used in anti-dandruff shampoos, rinse-off personal cleansing and other hair care products.

Zinc Omadine shampoos (in concentrations between 1 to 2%) and shampoos with selenium sulide have been reported to be effective in the treatment of scalp psoriasis.
However, their efficacy has not been substantiated by controlled studies.
There is also some evidence that shampoos with antifungal agents (e.g.ketoconazole)can have a beneficial effect on scalp conditions.

Zinc Omadine should be noted, however, that the effectiveness of these shampoos is much smaller than these containing tars, corticosteroids or keratolytics.
Zinc Omadine is very rapidly transformed by photolysis. Experiments conducted under sterile conditions with a light:dark cycle of 12:12 hours have shown that, under exposure to light, the concentration of [pyridine-2,6-14C]Zinc Omadine in pH 9 buffer was reduced to 33% of the radioactivity added in 15 min.
Data from this study also demonstrated that less than 5% of the 14C added occurred as Zinc Omadine after 1 hour of exposure to light.

Similar results have been achieved when photolysis of Zinc Omadine was investigated by use of artificial seawater.
In this study, the parent compound constituted 45% of the radioactivity added after 15 min while, after 24 hours, 1.3% of the added dose occurred as Zinc Omadine.
The estimated half-lives of the photolytic transformation of Zinc Omadine was 13 min in pH 9 buffer and 17.5 min in artificial seawater (Reynolds 1995a).

The toxicity of the active substance Zinc Omadine has been investigated in standard laboratory tests with a number of aquatic organisms living in fresh water (the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum, the crustacean Daphnia magna, the fish rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas)) and in seawater (the crustacean Mysidopsis bahia, the fish sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus) and the oyster.

Organometallics, such as Zinc Omadine, are reactive with many other groups. Incompatible with acids and bases.
Organometallics are good reducing agents and therefore incompatible with oxidizing agents. Often reactive with water to generate toxic or flammable gases.
Zinc Omadine is known to exhibit antibacterial activity by disrupting cell membrane integrity and essential metabolic functions in bacteria.

Its antifungal effect is thought to derive from its ability to disrupt membrane transport by blocking the proton pump that energizes the transport mechanism.
A study from 2011 showed that antifungal effects of Zinc Omadine work by copper toxicity mechanism that targets critical iron–sulphur proteins.
Use of Zinc Omadine is prohibited within cosmetic products in the European Union since December 2021.

The substance was considered safe for use in rinse-off and leave-in products of different tested concentrations, but due to potential environmental toxicity consideration of the use of Zinc Omadine was made against potential alternative substance ingredients.
Due to no industry submission to the regulators supporting the continued use of Zinc Omadine and/or an absence of indications that there were no suitable alternatives to the substance: the use of Zinc Omadine became automatically prohibited within cosmetic products as an intended ingredient.
This was as a consequence of Zinc Omadine addition to the Cosmetic Product Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 Annex II list.

Zinc Omadine is the most popular anti-dandruff ingredient in the world, offering bactericide-fungicide efficacy in shampoos, conditioners, and leave-on products.
Zinc Omadine products have been providing dandruff relief and improved scalp health for over 50 years.
Zinc Omadine functions by disrupting cellular homeostasis in microorganisms through the inhibition of membrane transport processes.

This interference prevents essential nutrients from entering the cell and stops toxic substances from being expelled effectively.
As a result, fungal cells rapidly lose viability, making Zinc Omadine a highly efficient antifungal compound even at low application doses.
Its antimicrobial mechanism also includes the chelation of metal ions that microorganisms need for enzyme activity and metabolic reactions.

By depriving fungal and bacterial cells of these essential ions, the compound weakens their defensive systems and increases their sensitivity to environmental stress.
This dual-action mode contributes significantly to its strong and broad-spectrum performance.
Because of its stability, Zinc Omadine maintains its potency over extended shelf life and under various temperature conditions.

This stability ensures that products containing it remain effective regardless of storage conditions, shipping environments, or consumer habits.
Such reliability makes it attractive in mass-market formulations where consistency and long-term performance are essential.

Zinc Omadine is also appreciated for its compatibility with multiple delivery forms, including shampoos, soaps, creams, sprays, powders, and solid bars.
This versatility allows manufacturers to incorporate it into a wide range of commercial and therapeutic personal-care products.
As a result, it is commonly found in anti-dandruff shampoos, cleansing bars, scalp treatments, and dermatological preparations.

In industrial applications, Zinc Omadine helps control microbial growth in paints, coatings, and polymeric surfaces exposed to moisture.
This protection reduces the risk of mold staining, unpleasant odors, and material deterioration that can occur in humid environments.
Because of this capability, it is frequently used in household paints, marine coatings, bathroom sealants, and outdoor construction materials.

The compound contributes to product longevity by preventing biodegradation, a common problem in natural or polymer-rich materials.
Microorganisms often consume organic binders, fillers, or additives, weakening structures or causing discoloration and texture changes.
By suppressing microbial activity, Zinc Omadine helps preserve the physical integrity and appearance of treated materials.

In textiles and fabrics, Zinc Omadine can be applied as a finishing treatment that resists fungal colonization and odor-producing bacteria.
This is especially beneficial in environments where moisture accumulation is common, such as athletic wear, outdoor gear, and upholstery.
Such treatments help keep fabrics cleaner for longer periods, leading to improved hygiene and reduced maintenance needs.

Because Zinc Omadine acts on multiple biological pathways, microorganisms have a lower likelihood of developing resistance to it.
This resistance-limiting feature is important in long-term consumer products where repeated exposure could otherwise diminish efficacy.
Its robust mode of action therefore contributes to consistent and predictable antimicrobial performance across many use cycles.

The compound is also favored for its low volatility, which minimizes airborne exposure during manufacturing and consumer use.
Low volatility ensures that the active remains mostly within the product matrix or at the application site where its antimicrobial properties are needed.
This characteristic improves safety while maximizing targeted functionality.

Zinc Omadine is used as antifungal, antibacterial and antiseborrheic agent used in many shampoos and hair creams.
Zinc Omadine is directly cytotoxic and has antimicrobial effects.

Zinc Omadine is found in many shampoos (DHS-Zinc, Head and Shoulders) and should be applied for 5 minutes daily for 2 weeks.
Zinc Omadine can be used to treat dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis.
Zinc Omadine also has antibacterial properties and is effective against many pathogens from the Streptococcus and Staphylococcus genera.

Its other medical applications include treatments of psoriasis, eczema, ringworm, fungus, athletes foot, dry skin, atopic dermatitis, tinea versicolor, and vitiligo.
Because of its low solubility in water (8 ppm at neutral pH), Zinc Omadine is suitable for use in outdoor paints and other products that protect against mildew and algae.
Zinc Omadine is an algaecide.

Zinc Omadine is chemically incompatible with paints relying on metal carboxylate curing agents.
When it is used in latex paints with water containing much iron, a sequestering agent that preferentially binds the iron ions is needed.
Zinc Omadine is decomposed by ultraviolet light slowly, providing years of protection in direct sunlight.

Zinc Omadine is an antibacterial treatment for household sponges, as used by the 3M Corporation.
A process to apply Zinc Omadine to cotton with washable results was patented in the United States in 1984.
Zinc Omadine is used to prevent microbe growth in polyester.

Textiles with applied Zinc Omadine protect against odor-causing microorganisms.
Export of antimicrobial textiles reached US$497.4 million in 2015.
Zinc Omadine is widely used as an active ingredient in anti-dandruff shampoos because it suppresses the growth of Malassezia yeast on the scalp.

By reducing the fungal population, it helps relieve symptoms such as itching, flaking, and irritation that are characteristic of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.
This makes it a key component in many medicated shampoos, conditioning treatments, and scalp-soothing personal care products.
Zinc Omadine is also incorporated into cleansing bars, soaps, and body washes designed for individuals experiencing fungal or microbial skin issues.

These formulations rely on its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity to reduce microorganisms on the skin and prevent recurrence of irritation.
Such applications are especially common in dermatological products marketed for maintaining a healthy, balanced skin microbiome.

In industrial settings, Zinc Omadine is used as a preservative in paints, coatings, and sealants where it prevents mold, mildew, and algae growth.
These antimicrobial properties help protect coated surfaces from discoloration, degradation, and structural weakening caused by microbial colonization.
As a result, it is frequently included in interior paints, bathroom coatings, marine finishes, and exterior sealants.

The compound serves as a microbiological stabilizer in polymers and plastics, helping maintain the durability and clarity of products exposed to moisture.
When added to materials like PVC, polyurethane, or silicone-based compounds, it suppresses the development of odor-causing or material-degrading microorganisms.
This makes it an important additive in shower curtains, outdoor furniture, sealant strips, and flexible tubing.

Zinc Omadine is used in household products such as humidifier tablets, cleaning sprays, and antimicrobial surface treatments.
Its ability to inhibit microbial growth helps maintain cleaner surfaces and reduces unpleasant odors in environments prone to humidity.
These benefits make it a frequently chosen ingredient in consumer hygiene and household maintenance formulations.

Textile manufacturers incorporate Zinc Omadine into fabric finishes to provide long-lasting resistance to mold, mildew, and bacterial odors.
This is particularly valuable for sportswear, socks, upholstery, and outdoor fabrics that encounter moisture or sweat.
Such treatments improve comfort, hygiene, and the lifespan of the textile by preventing microbe-induced deterioration.

In personal grooming products, Zinc Omadine is used in beard washes, scalp serums, and anti-flake conditioners to maintain scalp and skin health.
Its antifungal activity helps manage flakiness and irritation in areas where sebaceous glands are more active.
Because of these effects, it is often featured in men’s grooming and targeted scalp-care lines.

The compound is also used in water-based systems such as cooling towers, industrial water loops, and storage tanks to prevent microbial contamination.
Its effectiveness at low concentrations helps maintain clean systems while minimizing residue accumulation.
These applications are essential in industries that rely on clean water flow to prevent corrosion, clogging, and biofilm formation.

Zinc Omadine appears in disinfecting and antimicrobial coatings for surfaces that require long-lasting hygiene, including gym equipment, public facilities, and medical environments.
These coatings use its strong antimicrobial action to slow microbial buildup and reduce the frequency of cleaning.
This improves both cleanliness standards and long-term maintenance efficiency.

Safety Profile Of Zinc Omadine:
Poison by ingestion, skin contact, intraperitoneal, and intravenous routes.
Moderately toxic by subcutaneous route an experimental teratogen.
Experimental reproductive effects an eye irritant.

When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of NOx, SOx, and ZnO.
Zinc Omadine is used as an anti- dandruff agent in shampoos.
Zinc Omadine is approved for over-the-counter topical use in the United States as a treatment for dandruff and is the active ingredient in several anti-dandruff shampoos and body wash gels.

In its industrial forms and strengths, it may be harmful by contact or ingestion.
Zinc Omadine can in the laboratory setting trigger a variety of responses, such as DNA damage in skin cells.
Zinc Omadine can irritate the skin because its antimicrobial activity can disrupt natural lipid layers and sensitivities in the outer epidermis.

Prolonged or repeated contact may lead to redness, dryness, or mild inflammation depending on individual sensitivity.
For this reason, direct handling should be minimized, and protective gloves are recommended in industrial environments.

The compound may also cause eye irritation if it comes into contact with the eyes due to its ability to disturb the delicate structure of mucous membranes.
Exposure can lead to watering, burning sensations, or temporary discomfort that may persist unless the eyes are thoroughly rinsed.
Proper eye protection is therefore important when working with concentrated or powdered forms.

Inhalation of dust or aerosolized particles can irritate the respiratory tract because the compound can interact with moist tissues in the nose, throat, and lungs.
This irritation may result in coughing, throat dryness, or difficulty breathing, especially in poorly ventilated spaces.
Adequate ventilation or respiratory protection helps minimize inhalation risks during manufacturing or application.

Ingestion of Zinc Omadine can cause gastrointestinal discomfort since antifungal compounds may interfere with normal biological processes in the digestive system.
Symptoms could include nausea, stomach irritation, or more significant effects depending on the amount consumed.
Accidental ingestion should be considered potentially harmful and requires prompt medical attention.
