4-tert-octylphenol is a useful research chemical.
4-tert-octylphenol belongs to the alkyl phenols.

The best-known chemical of the group is nonylphenol.
4-tert-Octylphenol is an alkylbenzene.

Octylphenols are a group of compounds that differ according to their chemical characteristics.
Among them, 4-tert-octylphenol (or 4tOP) (CAS: 140-66-9) is the most commercially available isomer and the one most found in octylphenol mixtures.

Between 10,000 and 100,000 tonnes of 4-tert-Octylphenol are produced each year in the European Union.
4-tert-Octylphenol was measured in different units for some of the studies.

4-tert-Octylphenol belongs to the class of organic compounds known as phenylpropanes.
These are organic compounds containing a phenylpropane moiety.

Of all octyphenol ethoxylates, the 4-tert-Octylphenol compounds are commercially most important.
Accordingly, their degradation products – e.g., the branched 4-tert-Octylphenol and the linear 4-n-octylphenol - are the dominant octylphenols found in the environment.

USES and APPLICATIONS of 4-TERT-OCTYLPHENOL:
4-tert-Octylphenol, an alkylphenol, is used to manufacture alkylphenol ethoxylates, which are anionic surfactants used in detergents, industrial cleaners, and emulsifiers.

4-tert-Octylphenol is widely used in the manufacture of oil soluble phenolic resin, surfactant, adhesive, etc.
4-tert-Octylphenol can also be used in the production of octylphenol polyoxyethylene ether and Octylphenol formaldehyde resin.

4-tert-Octylphenol is also widely used as raw materials of non-ionic surfactant, textile auxiliaries, oilfield auxiliaries, antioxidants and rubber vulcanizing agents.

4-tert-octylphenol itself, the resins and ethoxylates made from it are used in paints, adhesives and tires, for example.
4-tert-Octylphenol (OP), is surfactant widely used in herbicides.

The ethoxylates are also used in fracking natural gas production and are forced into rock together with water under high pressure to release natural gas.
4-tert-Octylphenol diethoxylate is a degradation product of the multi-purpose surfactant, Triton X.

4-tert-Octylphenol is widely used surfactants in commercial products.
4-tert-octylphenol is used to make surfactants used in detergents, industrial cleaners, and emulsifiers.

4-tert-Octylphenol (4t-OP) is used in manufacturing processes as an intermediate in the generation of surfactants, synthetic rubber additives, or resins.

4-tert-Octylphenol is also used to manufacture alkylphenol ethoxylates.
4-tert-Octylphenol is found mainly in detergents, cleaning products, and emulsifiers and less frequently in paints, personal care products, pesticides, paper, pulp, and textiles.

The 4-tert-octylphenol molecule is mainly used in the production of phenolic resins (found, among other things, in the manufacture of tyres) and ethoxylated derivatives, used as emulsifiers, intermediates and dispersing agents in various industrial applications.
