ABIETIC ACID

EC / List no.: 208-178-3
CAS no.: 514-10-3
Mol. formula: C20H30O2

Abietic acid (also known as abietinic acid or sylvic acid) is an organic compound that occurs widely in trees.
Abietic Acid is the primary component of resin acid, is the primary irritant in pine wood and resin, isolated from rosin (via isomerization) and is the most abundant of several closely related organic acids that constitute most of rosin, the solid portion of the oleoresin of coniferous trees.
Its ester or salt is called an abietate

Preparation
Abietic acid is extracted from tree rosin.
The pure material is a colorless solid, but commercial samples are usually a glassy or partly crystalline yellowish solid that melts at temperatures as low as 85 °C (185 °F).

Abietic Acid belongs to the abietane diterpene group of organic compounds derived from four isoprene units.
Abietic Acid is used in lacquers, varnishes, and soaps, and for the analysis of resins and the preparation of metal resinates.
Abietic Acid is found in Pinus insularis (Khasi Pine), Pinus kesiya Royle, Pinus strobus (Eastern White Pine), and Pinus sylvestris (Scots Pine).

Uses
Rosin has been used for centuries for caulking ships.[4] Abietic Acid is also rubbed on the bows of musical instruments to make them less slippery.
In modern times methods have been developed for improving the properties of the rosin acids, which are otherwise soft, tacky, and low-melting and subject to rapid deterioration by oxidation in air.
Stability is greatly increased by heat treatment.

Resin acids are converted into ester gum by reaction with controlled amounts of glycerol or other polyhydric alcohols. Ester gum has drying properties and is used in paints, varnishes, and lacquers.

Rosin has been used to depackage integrated circuits from their epoxy coatings.
Abietic Acid is also used as a core for tin solder wire in order to increase the flow of the melted tin when heat is applied.

Description
Abietic acid is probably a major allergen of colophony, by way of oxidation products. Its detection in a material indicates that allergenic components of colophony are present.

Chemical Properties
yellow resinous powder, crystals or chunks

Uses:
Abietic Acid is the primary component of resin acid found commonly in rosin. Abietic Acid exhibited potent testosterone 5α-reductase inhibitory activity in vitro.

manufacture of esters (ester gums), e.g., methyl ester, vinyl and glyceryl esters for use in lacquers and varnishes; manufacture of "metal resinates", soaps, plastics, and paper sizes, assists growth of lactic and butyric acid bacteria; component in tall oil used as deodorizing agent in cooling fluids, major component of rosin used in the production of varnishes, printing inks, paper, soldering fluxes, greases, cutting fluids, glue tackifiers, adhesives, surface coatings, polish, shoes, insulations, waxes, cosmetics (mascara, rouge, eye shadow), topical medicaments, violin bow rosin, day, athletic grip aid, pine oil deansers; component in dental impression materials and periodontal packings.
Abietic acid is used to make ester gums in lacquers, varnishes and soaps.
Abietic Acid is also used in metal resonates and plastics. Further, it is utilized in musical instruments to make them less slippery.
Abietic Acid acts as a precursor to natural product synthesis. In addition to this, it is used to depackage integrated circuits from their epoxy coatings.

Abietic acid is an abietane diterpene originally isolated from wood resin that has diverse biological activities, including enzyme inhibitory, antiproliferative, antibacterial, and anti-obesity properties.

Abietic acid selectively inhibits proliferation of HeLa cervical cancer cells over noncancerous Vero cells (IC50s = 15 and 53 μM, respectively) and inhibits the growth of S. epidermidis, P. acnes, and S. mitis bacteria (MICs = 8, 4, and 16 μg/ml, respectively).
Abietic Acid induces expression of fatty acid binding protein 2 (FABP2; Item No. 10009548) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) in differentiated 3T3-L1 mouse adipocytes when used at a concentration of 25 μM.
Abietic acid (40 mg/kg per day) also decreases body and adipose tissue weight in mice fed a high-fat diet.

Abietic acid is used as a precursor in the preparation of petrochemical curing agents.
Abietic Acid is used in the synthesis of dehydroabietic acid derivatives, that exhibit antitumor, antimycotic, and antiviral activities.
Abietic Acid can also be used as a starting material in the total synthesis of (-)-triptolide and (+)-amberketal.

Abietic acid refers to a yellowish resinous powder, found in rosin from coniferous trees like pine, spruce, and fir. Abietic Acid has a natural occurrence.

Abietic Acid is a yellow, crystalline, water-insoluble acid, C20H30O2, obtained from the resin of a species of pine: used chiefly in driers, varnishes, and soaps.

Abietic acid is a white resinous powder.
Abietic Acid takes rosin as raw material, after a series of distillation, the residual liquid of turpentine oil is steamed out, then filter it at 210℃ or so and cool and crystallize to get the finished product.
Abietic acid is widely used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry and used as a pesticide emulsifier, textile sizing agent, construction material lubricant, plastic, rubber plasticizer, paint drier in various fields.

APPLICATIONS & USES
1. used as epoxy and petrochemical curing agents.
2. used as pharmaceutical intermediates used in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-carcinogen etc.
3. used as a starting material in the total synthesis of:
• (−)-triptonide and (−)-triptolide as potent antitumor and immunosuppressant agents;
• quinone (−)-12-deoxyroyleanone as antileishmanial agent;
• abietic acid-derived catechol (methyl 11,12-dihydroxyabietate-8,11,13-trien-18-oate, MDTO) as a potential antioxidant agent;
• Epoxidation with MCPBA.
4. used as surfactant and emulsion stabilizer in cosmetics
5. used as polymerization emulsifier for styrene butadiene rubber and chloroprene rubber after sodium hydroxide saponification.
Abietic Acid also can be used as rubber plasticizer, adhesive, high-grade paper on the adhesive and gum ingredients.

Benefits
1. Easy to be oxidized
2.There is a gap in the solubility of different Alcohols solvent, and to be listed in descending order by solubility: Butanol + Propyl Alcohol >Anhydrous Ethanol > Methanol.
