Aluminium nitrate is a white, water-soluble salt of aluminium and nitric acid, most commonly existing as the crystalline hydrate, aluminium nitrate nonahydrate, Al(NO3)3·9H2O.
Aluminium nitrate appears as a white, crystalline solid. Noncombustible but can accelerate the burning of combustible materials. 
If large quantities are involved or the combustible material is finely divided, an explosion may result.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:

You won’t easily form Aluminium nitrate just by combining nitric acid and Aluminium.

Aluminium nitrate (Al(NO3)3·9H2O) normally exists as a crystalline nonahydrate in a solid or powder form. 
This nonahydrate form of the chemical has a melting point of 73.9°C and will decompose if exposed to higher temperatures where as the anhydrous form melts at 63°C.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES:

SOLUBILITY:

Aluminium nitrate was tried to be dissolved in such substances like water, methanol, ethanol, and ethylene glycol. 
Aluminium nitrate is soluble in all of these substances. 
As of water, Aluminium nitrate is soluble at 160 g/100 mL at 100 °C. 
In case of methanol, the soluble indicator is 14.45 g/100mL. 
Aluminium nitrate dissolves in ethanol at 8.63 g/100mL.

APPLICATION:

This compound appears to be quite valuable and has various important uses.

PREPARATION:

Aluminium nitrate cannot be synthesized by the reaction of aluminium with concentrated nitric acid, as the aluminium forms a passivation layer.
Aluminium nitrate may instead be prepared by the reaction of nitric acid with aluminium(III) chloride. 
Nitrosyl chloride is produced as a by-product; it bubbles out of the solution as a gas. 
More conveniently, the salt can be made by reacting nitric acid with aluminium hydroxide.
Aluminium nitrate may also be prepared a metathesis reaction between aluminium sulfate and a nitrate salt with a suitable cation such as barium, strontium, calcium, silver, or lead.


REACTIONS:

Since Al(NO3)3 or its salt hydrates dissociates to Al3+ and NO3 ions in the aqueous solution, its reactions in solutions are those of Al3+. 
Aluminium nitrate is partially hydrolyzed, producing H3O+ and thus accounting for the acidity of its solution in water. 
The products constitute a complex mixture of monoand polynuclear hydroxo species.
Aluminium nitrate is soluble in bases, forming aluminates. 


PRECAUTION:

Aluminium nitrate is nonflammable. 
Yet, Aluminium nitrate can accelerate the burning of other substances and may lead to an explosion as a result of prolonged contact with heat.
Although water can be used from a far distance to control such fires, when the chemical is combusted, it produces oxides of nitrogen that are toxic.  
Other mixtures to avoid include combining the substance with alkyl esters and phosphorus, tin(III) chloride, or other reducing agents as this can also cause an explosion. When mixed with acids, the chemical forms toxic nitrogen dioxide.
When handling this product, Aluminium nitrate is advisable to use proper protective equipment such as goggles, face protection, and rubber gloves in addition to dust respirators. 

Aluminium nitrate is because contact with the Aluminium nitrate dust can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and the skin. 
The dust may also irritate the lungs according to some publications, and has been labeled as harmful if inhaled.
Ingestion of large amounts of this chemical can lead to nausea, vomiting, gastric irritation, and purging. 
However, the chemical is not classified as a carcinogen to humans.

STORAGE:

The anhydrous form of Aluminium nitrate should be stored in a tight-sealed container. 
Aluminium nitrate should be kept away from moisture. 
The chemical seems to turn slightly yellow after sitting for years.
To dispose of the substance, any base such as a hydroxide will effectively neutralize the chemical.
