Introduction

Beeswax, designated as E901, is a natural wax produced by honey bees (Apis mellifera) to build the honeycomb in their hives. As a food additive, it serves as a glazing agent (to give a shiny appearance) and a surface treatment to prevent moisture loss and spoilage. Both yellow (unbleached) and white (bleached or oxidized) forms are used, depending on the desired visual effect.

Yellow beeswax has a characteristic honey-like scent and a yellow-brown color, while white beeswax is odorless and white, making it suitable for applications where a neutral appearance is required. It is an approved additive in many countries and is considered very safe due to its long history of human use.
