Cetyl alcohol is an acetate ester derived from hexadecan-1-ol (palmityl alcohol) used as an emollient, masking agent and skin conditioner; pheromone constituent present in various species of mouse, arachnid and insect. It has a role as a cosmetic, a pheromone and an epitope. It derives from a  hexadecan-1-ol

In industrial applications, cetyl alcohol is a primary ingredient in fuels, chemical intermediates and plasticizers and is used as a lubricant for nuts and bolts in manufacturing applications.

 

Cetyl alcohol is used in the cosmetic industry as an opacifier in shampoos, or as an emollient, emulsifier or thickening agent in the manufacture of skin creams and lotions. It is also employed as a lubricant for nuts and bolts, and is the active ingredient in some "liquid pool covers" (forming a non-volatile surface layer to reduce water evaporation, related latent vaporization heat loss, and thus to retain heat in the pool). Moreover, it can also be used as a non-ionic co-surfactant in emulsion applications.

 

Cetyl alcohol was discovered in 1817 by the French chemist Michel Chevreul when he heated spermaceti, a waxy substance obtained from sperm whale oil, with caustic potash (potassium hydroxide). Flakes of cetyl alcohol were left behind on cooling. Modern production is based around the reduction of palmitic acid, which is obtained from palm oil.

 

Cetyl alcohol also known as hexadecan-1-ol and palmityl alcohol, is a C-16 fatty alcohol with the formula CH3(CH2)15OH. At room temperature, cetyl alcohol takes the form of a waxy white solid or flakes. The name cetyl derives from the whale oil (cetacea oil) from which it was first isolated.

The emollient properties are due to absorption and retention of cetyl alcohol in the epidermis, where it lubricates and softens the skin while imparting a characteristic ‘velvety’ texture.
Cetyl alcohol is also used for its water absorption properties in water-in-oil emulsions. For example, a mixture of petrolatum and cetyl alcohol (19 : 1) will absorb 40–50% of its weight of water. Cetyl alcohol acts as a weak emulsifier of the water-in-oil type, thus allowing a reduction of the quantity of other emulsifying agents used in a formulation. Cetyl alcohol has also been reported to increase the consistency of water-in-oil emulsions.
In oil-in-water emulsions, cetyl alcohol is reported to improve stability by combining with the water-soluble emulsifying agent. The combined mixed emulsifier produces a close packed, monomolecular barrier at the oil–water interface which forms a mechanical barrier against droplet coalescence.
In semisolid emulsions, excess cetyl alcohol combines with the aqueous emulsifier solution to form a viscoelastic continuous phase that imparts semisolid properties to the emulsion and also prevents droplet coalescence. Therefore, cetyl alcohol is sometimes referred to as a ‘consistency improver’ or a ‘bodying agent’, although it may be necessary to mix cetyl alcohol with a hydrophilic emulsifier to impart this property.
It should be noted that pure or pharmacopeial grades of cetyl alcohol may not form stable semisolid emulsions and may not show the same physical properties as grades of cetyl alcohol that contain significant amounts of other similar alcohols.

Cetostearyl alcohol is prepared by the reduction of the appropriate fatty acids from vegetable and animal sources. Cetostearyl alcohol can also be prepared directly from hydrocarbon sources.

 

Pharmaceutical Applications

Cetostearyl alcohol is used in cosmetics and topical pharmaceutical preparations. In topical pharmaceutical formulations, cetostearyl alcohol will increase the viscosity and act as an emulsifier in both water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions. Cetostearyl alcohol will stablize an emulsion and also act as a co-emulsifier, thus decreasing the total amount of surfactant required to form a stable emulsion. Cetostearyl alcohol is also used in the preparation of nonaqueous creams and sticks, and in nonlathering shaving creams. Research articles have been published in which cetostearyl alcohol has been used to control or slow the dissolution rate of tablets or microspheres containing water-soluble drugs, or poorly watersoluble drugs, as well as to stabilize amorphous systems. In combination with other surfactants, cetostearyl alcohol forms emulsions with very complex microstructures. These microstructures can include liquid crystals, lamellar structures, and gel phases.

 

Safety

Cetostearyl alcohol is mainly used in topical pharmaceutical formulations and topical cosmetic formulations.
Cetostearyl alcohol is generally regarded as a nontoxic material. Although it is essentially nonirritating, sensitization reactions to cetostearyl, cetyl, and stearyl alcohols have been reported.
Gamma radiation has been shown to be feasible for sterilization of petrolatum containing cetostearyl alcohol resulting in low levels of radiolysis products, which are of low toxicity.

While this may not seem to be an important element for a product, it is vital to ensure that the product is not separated or lumped so that key ingredients can be evenly distributed over the skin. Cetyl alcohol also acts as a surfactant. Surfactant is a short term for surfactant. Surfactants are compounds that reduce the surface tension between two substances. This is possible because one end of the surfactant molecule is drawn into water while the other end is drawn into oil. Is Cetyl Alcohol Safe?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the regulatory group responsible for the safety of the drug, food and skin care components that contain cetyl alcohol, has approved cetyl alcohol for their stated use. It is also on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's list of permitted food additives. The cosmetic component review expert panel evaluated scientific data on cetyl alcohol and concluded that this component is not sensitizing, non-toxic and safe to use in cosmetic products.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review expert panel considers cetyl alcohol to be safe for use in cosmetics, while many dermatologists believe that this ingredient can be an irritant for those with sensitive skin. There is some evidence to suggest that cetyl alcohol, along with other synthetic fatty alcohols, has the ability to alter the lipid bilayer of the epidermis and cause allergic dermal reactions. With this information, it is best for those with sensitive skin or skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea or psoriasis to patch test with any product containing cetyl alcohol.

CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR CETYL ALCOHOL
As with all other New Directions Aromatics products, Cetyl Alcohol Raw Material is for external use only. 
It is imperative to consult a medical practitioner before using this oil for therapeutic purposes. 
Pregnant and nursing women as well as those with sensitive skin are especially advised not to use Cetyl Alcohol Raw Material without the medical advice of a physician. 
This product should always be stored in an area that is inaccessible to children, especially those under the age of 7.

Prior to using Cetyl Alcohol Raw Material, a skin test is recommended. 
This can be done by melting Cetyl Alcohol pellet in 1 ml of a preferred Carrier Oil and applying a dime-size amount of this blend to a small area of skin that is not sensitive. 
Cetyl Alcohol must never be used near the eyes, inner nose, and ears, or on any other particularly sensitive areas of skin. 
Potential side effects of Cetyl Alcohol include irritation, stinging, burning, redness, or inflammation. 
In the event of an allergic reaction, discontinue use of the product and see a doctor, pharmacist, or allergist immediately for a health assessment and appropriate remedial action. 
To prevent side effects, consult with a medical professional prior to use.

An all-purpose, non-gelling thickening agent widely used throughout the cosmetic industry for the stable consistency it gives to the products, it is comprised of 95% fatty acids derived from vegetable oils, primarily palm oil. This versatile material is also an emollient, moisturizer, viscosity stabilizer, and foam enhancer. It comes in white, odourless flakes, which are insoluble in cold water, and only very slightly soluble in hot water and alcohol.

Directions For Use: Cetyl Alcohol is added to oils and melted during the oil phase, and is a good secondary emulsifier when amounting to less than 5%. Use between 0.5 - 6% in the oil phase (e.g., 3% for a creamy lotion with approximately 3% emulsifier), and melt at 54ºC / 129ºF.

Note: Though this replaces the traditional ingredient, whale oil, in cosmetics and toiletries, this product does not contain any material derived from animals.

Cautions: Though unlikely to aggravate pre-existing medical conditions, do not use on broken skin or in therapeutic creams. Direct undiluted contact may cause some irritation or discomfort to the skin and eyes. Otherwise, with the use of good practices, there are no known hazards when formulating this material.

The other type of alcohols used in skincare products, the long-chain, fatty alcohols (such as cetyl and stearyl alcohols and their mixture called cetostearyl or cetearyl alcohol) are non-irritating and can be very beneficial for dry skin. The CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) Expert Panel has assessed Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol and Cetearyl Alcohol as non-irritating, non-toxic and safe to use in cosmetic products. Skin reactions caused by them are uncommon; however, there are rare cases of irritation or contact allergy associated with products containing these ingredients. Reactions occur for the most part in people with sensitive skin types, particularly in people suffering from eczema. So if you have a known allergy or irritation should occur, do not use products containing Cetyl or Cetearyl alcohol.

Cetyl alcohol is the 16-carbon alcohol corresponding to palmitic acid, so called because it is isolated from among the hydrolysis products of spermaceti. This medication is used as a moisturizer to treat or prevent dry, rough, scaly, itchy skin and minor skin irritations (e.g., diaper rash, skin burns from radiation therapy). It is an oleochemical, derived entirely from vegetable (coconut and/or palm kernel, supplemented with palm oil stearine) feedstock. It finds widespread application as an opacifier, emulsion thickener/bodifier and stabilizer, viscosity stabilizer, and rinse-out hair conditioning component.

Cetyl alcohol is a natural fatty alcohol that is compatible with anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants. Lipocol® C is used in emulsion systems as a viscosity builder and emulsion stabilizer.

Cetyl alcohol may be contained in cosmetic and personal care products such as shampoos, creams and lotions, lipsticks, helping lip color adhere to the skin. Mainly it is used as an opacifier, emulsifier and thickening agent that alter the thickness of the liquid and increase and stabilize the foaming capacity. Cetyl alcohol is also a multipurpose food additive, used as a flavoring agent or in food decorations.
