In cosmetics and personal care products, these ingredients are widely used and can be found in moisturizers, skin care and cleansing products, personal cleanliness products, bath soaps, shampoos and conditioners, hair dyes, hair bleaches, and many other product types.
Why is it used in cosmetics and personal care products?
Disodium EDTA and the related ingredients bind to metal ions which inactivates them. The binding of metal ions helps prevent the deterioration of cosmetics and personal care products. It also helps to maintain clarity, protect fragrance compounds, and prevent rancidity.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviewed the safety of Disodium EDTA and Calcium Disodium EDTA and approved the use of these ingredients as food preservatives for direct addition to food.
The safety of Disodium EDTA, Calcium Disodium EDTA, Diammonium EDTA, Dipotassium EDTA, EDTA, HEDTA, TEA-EDTA, Tetrasodium EDTA, Tripotassium EDTA and Trisodium HEDTA was assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel.
The CIR Expert Panel evaluated the scientific data and concluded that Disodium EDTA and related ingredients were safe as used in cosmetics and personal care products.

CIR Safety Review: EDTA and the related ingredients at the concentrations used in cosmetic and personal care products were not dermal irritants or sensitizers. Studies indicated that these ingredients were not carcinogens. Because these ingredients bind metals required for normal cell division, some studies that indicated that these compounds were weakly mutagenic. Some studies showed reproductive and developmental effects following oral exposure to large doses of metal chelators, likely an effect of the binding of metals required for normal reproduction and development.
The CIR Expert Panel reviewed data that indicated that EDTA and the related ingredients were not well absorbed through the skin. Therefore, dermal exposures to EDTA or HEDTA from the use of cosmetics and personal care products containing these ingredients would result in very little skin penetration and systemic levels well below those shown to produce adverse effects in oral studies. Because no data were available regarding the absorption of these ingredients following inhalation exposure, the CIR Panel expressed concern about EDTA in products that may be inhaled. They conducted an exposure assessment assuming 25% EDTA in a product. The calculated dose of EDTA via inhalation of an aerosolized product based on this assessment did not raise concerns about adverse effects of EDTA or its salts in cosmetics and personal care products that may be inhaled.
The CIR Expert Panel also recognized that EDTA, HEDTA and their salts are penetration enhancers. Therefore, formulators should be aware of this when combining these ingredients with those found to be safe primarily because they were not significantly absorbed.

Not Associated With Cancer
Although research is limited, there is currently no scientific data that associates consumption of calcium disodium EDTA with an increased risk of cancer (8).
Additionally, studies have shown that it’s very poorly absorbed by the digestive tract in both animals and humans (9Trusted Source).
One study that looked at chelating agents, including calcium disodium EDTA, concluded that calcium disodium did not have cancer-causing potential. Researchers even observed that the substance decreased the carcinogenicity of chromium oxide (10Trusted Source).
Furthermore, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has declared that there is no concern for increased cancer risk with consumption of EDTA (11).
SUMMARY
Though research is limited, scientific evidence currently does not suggest that calcium disodium EDTA has cancer-causing effects.
Not Associated With Birth Defects
Multiple studies have evaluated the possible effects of calcium disodium EDTA on reproduction and its association with birth defects.
In one four-generation rat study, calcium disodium EDTA doses of up to 114 mg per pound (250 mg per kg) of body weight per day did not result in increased rates of reproductive or birth defects in any of the three generations of rat offsprings (12Trusted Source).
In another rat study, animals who received oral calcium disodium EDTA were at no higher risk of delivering offspring with birth defects than the control group (13Trusted Source).
Moreover, another rat study found no negative reproductive effects of calcium disodium EDTA, as long as zinc levels were adequate (14Trusted Source).
Lastly, based on older case reports, there have been no adverse birth defects associated with women treated with chelation therapy of calcium disodium EDTA for lead toxicity (15Trusted Source).
SUMMARY
Multiple studies involving rats, along with human case reports, do not associate calcium disodium EDTA intake with reproductive or birth defects.
May Cause Digestive Issues in High Doses
Based on current research, the only potential negative effect of calcium disodium EDTA as a food additive appears to be digestive upset.
Many rat studies have shown that large oral doses of the substance caused frequent and loose bowel movements along with decreased appetite (14Trusted Source, 16Trusted Source).
However, these side effects only seem to transpire if calcium disodium EDTA is consumed in high amounts — amounts that would be very difficult to achieve through a normal diet.
Chelation therapy — which is not the focus of this article — requires higher doses, which may cause more and potentially more serious adverse effects.
SUMMARY
Calcium disodium EDTA as a food additive may cause diarrhea and decreased appetite if consumed at high doses. However, such high doses would be difficult to achieve through a typical diet.
Is It Safe?
For most individuals, eating foods that contain calcium disodium EDTA appears to be safe.
While many packaged foods contain this preservative, the absorption rate of oral calcium disodium EDTA is minimal.
In fact, your digestive tract absorbs no more than 5% (11).
Additionally, it’s estimated that a typical person consumes only 0.1 mg per pound (0.23 mg per kg) of body weight per day — much less than the ADI of 1.1 mg per pound (2.5 mg per kg) of body weight established by the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (17, 18).
Though high doses have been associated with digestive distress, the amount that you get from food alone is so small that it’s very unlikely that you would experience these adverse effects.
SUMMARY
Many packaged foods contain calcium disodium EDTA. However, the amount found in food is found in such small amounts that it’s unlikely to negatively impact your health.

Ingredient to Avoid: Disodium EDTA
Disodium EDTA is in many products as a preservative, to stabilise it, or to enhance the foaming action. It’s also used as a chelating agent, which means it us used to precipitate out metals from the formulation (if tap water were used to make the formulation instead purified water, for example, and it can bind with metals dissolved in your shower water).
One reason we recommend to NOT use products containing Disodium EDTA, is because it is a ‘penetration enhancer’. Although it doesn’t absorb particularly well into the skin, it disrupts the surface of skin cells so that other chemicals can get in more easily – ie other chemicals in your product, and chemicals in your shower water, etc.
So if you see Disodium EDTA, then look at what else is in the ingredients list, because you might not be too thrilled at those chemicals getting a free ride.
