Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is used by consumers, by professional workers (widespread uses), in formulation or re-packing and at industrial sites.

Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate, also known as actylol, is the organic compound with the formula CH3CH(OH)CO2CH2CH3.
Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is the ethyl ester of lactic acid.

A colorless liquid, Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is a chiral ester.
Being naturally derived, Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is readily available as a single enantiomer.

Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is commonly used as a solvent.
Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is considered biodegradable and can be used as a water-rinsible degreaser.

Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is an environmentally benign solvent with effectiveness comparable to petroleum-based solvents.
The worldwide solvent market is about 30 million pounds per year, where Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate can have an important share.

Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is considered a chemical commodity and has attracted much attention in recent years, since Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is formed by the esterification reaction of ethanol and lactic acid, which can be generated from biomass raw materials through fermentation.
In this work, an overview regarding the main properties and applications of Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate, as well as Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate synthesis and production processes, with a particular emphasis on reactive/separation processes, is presented.

Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate, Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate or 2-hydroxypropanoic acid ethyl ester is the chemical compound of lactic acid with ethanol in the form of an ester.
Depending on Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate synthesis, Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is available as racemate or pure substance.

If Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is split back into Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate starting materials ethanol and lactic acid (e.g. by a chemical reaction), Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate can be decomposed in nature.
Esterases, naturally occurring enzymes, can also carry out the split back into the original materials.

Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is therefore considered a "green solvent", as Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate does not leave any toxic decomposition products in the ecosystem.
This provides an advantage over chlorinated solvents or glycols or glycol ethers, which have a higher biological toxicity.

Also known as Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate, is a monobasic ester formed from lactic acid and ethanol, commonly used as a solvent hence the name “Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate”.
Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is considered biodegradable and can be used as a water-risible degreaser.
Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is found naturally in small quantities in a wide variety of foods including wine, chicken, and various fruits.

Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is produced from biological sources and can be either the Levo (S) form or Dextro (R) form, depending on the organism that is the source of the lactic acid.
The most biologically sourced Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is ethyl (−)-L-lactate (ethyl (S)-lactate).

Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is also produced industrially from petrochemical stocks, and this Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate consists of the racemic mixture of Levo and Dextro forms.
In some jurisdictions, the natural product is exempt from many restrictions placed upon the use and disposal of solvents.
Because both enantiomers are found in nature, and because Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is easily biodegradable, Ethyl 2-hydroxypropanoate is considered to be a “green solvent.”
