A colorless to light yellowish oily liquid that works as a UVB (280-320nm) sunscreen filter with a peak absorbance at 306 nm.
Ethylhexyl salicylate's not a strong filter in itself, it's always used in combination with other sunscreen agents to further enhance the SPF and to solubilize other solid UV filters.

Ethylhexyl salicylate has a good safety profile and is allowed to be used at a max concentration of 5% both in the US and in Europe (10% is allowed in Japan).

Ethylhexyl salicylate and all other salicylates have a good safety profile.

Ethylhexyl salicylate is often used to improve affinity and reduce photodegradation of other sunscreen ingredients (such as oxybenzone and avobenzone), and <1% of the applied dose of Octisalate penetrates through the skin.
Although Ethylhexyl salicylate is a weaker UVB absorber Ethylhexyl salicylate has superior stability than some other sunscreen active ingredients and does not produce reactive oxygen species when exposed to sunlight.

However, Ethylhexyl salicylate does have some minor sensitization potential; with some individuals experiencing minimal to mild skin irritation.

Ethylhexyl salicylate is manufactured and/or imported in the European Economic Area in 1 000 - 10 000 tonnes per year.2-Ethylhexyl salicylate is used by consumers, by professional workers (widespread uses), in formulation or re-packing, at industrial sites and in manufacturing.
Ethylhexyl salicylate salicylate, an ultraviolet filter, is widely used to protect skin against sunlight-induced harmful effects in the cosmetic industry.

In this study, the green synthesis of Ethylhexyl salicylate using immobilized lipase through a solvent-free and reduced pressure evaporation system was investigated.
A Box-Behnken design was employed to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) model.

The parameters for an optimal architecture of an ANN were set out: a quick propagation algorithm, a hyperbolic tangent transfer function, 10,000 iterations, and six nodes within the hidden layer.
The best-fitting performance of the ANN was determined by the coefficient of determination and the root-mean-square error between the correlation of predicted and experimental data, indicating that the ANN displayed excellent data-fitting properties.

Finally, the experimental conditions of synthesis were well established with the optimal parameters to obtain a high conversion of Ethylhexyl salicylate.
In conclusion, this study efficiently replaces the traditional solvents with a green process for the synthesis of 2-ethylhexyl salicylate to avoid environmental contamination, and this process is well-modeled by a methodological ANN for optimization, which might be a benefit for industrial production.Absorption and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorescence of 2′-ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS) were examined in the presence of cationic, non-ionic, and anionic surfactants.

Ethylhexyl salicylate was found that linear 2-ethylhexyl salicylate molecule was solubilized in micelles with Ethylhexyl salicylates flexible and hydrophobic 2′-ethylhexyl chain toward the micellar core and with its rigid salicyl moiety toward the micelle-water interface.
The UV absorption of Ethylhexyl salicylate was improved and the intramolecular hydrogen bonding formation of Ethylhexyl salicylate was favored, resulting in greatly enhanced ESIPT fluorescence.

The excited Ethylhexyl salicylate molecules decay via visible luminescence and non-radiative dectivation.
The binding sites of Ethylhexyl salicylate in micelles were explained at a molecular level in terms of molecular structures and sizes of Ethylhexyl salicylate and surfactants.
