EXTENDER PVC

Extender PVC, defined as PVC extender resin, plastisol mixture resin or extender PVC in Turkish, is a special class of PVC polymers used with emulsion or microsuspension PVC resin, especially in PVC plastisol systems. The term "extender" here does not mean mineral filler; the material itself is a vinyl chloride-based polymer resin.
Extender PVC is not a single fixed commercial substance, but a group of PVC resins with different particle size distributions, K-values, surface structures, and plasticizer absorption properties. Common PVC homopolymer chemical identification is indicated by CAS No 9002-86-2. Some blend resins may be vinyl chloride copolymer; a manufacturer's certificate is required for precise identification.
Plastisol is a system in which PVC resin particles are dispersed in a liquid plasticizer at room temperature, which undergoes gelation and fusion when heated. Fine particle paste PVC resin can increase plastisol viscosity due to its high surface area. Extender PVC particles, which are generally coarser and have low plasticizer absorption, can reduce viscosity or reduce the tendency to thicken with shear when added in the appropriate proportion.
Commercial products such as INOVYN PVC 266EF, Westlake Vinnolite C 65 V, Vinnolit EXT, and Vestolit XC 866/XG 217 are various examples of extender/blending resins. These products are not the same resin; K-value, particle size, process compatibility, and application performance may differ from one another.
Extender PVC; It can be evaluated in textile coatings, artificial leather, vinyl flooring, floor covering, dipping products, automotive underbody protection, sealants, rotation molding and various compact or foamed PVC products. For the correct selection of the product, the target plastisol viscosity, plasticizer ratio, main paste PVC grade, filler level and final product performance should be examined together.

WHAT IS EXTENDER PVC?

Extender PVC is a specialized PVC resin that adjusts the rheology of plastisol by blending with PVC paste or dispersion resins. It consists of grains with a relatively uniform surface and controlled particle size, usually prepared by the specific conditions of suspension polymerization.
Chemically, the typical homopolymer Extender PVC and the mother paste PVC resin carry the same vinyl chloride repeat unit. However, the particle size, porosity, the interaction of the particle surface with the plasticizer, and the molecular weight of the resin are different. The main source of the difference in formulation performance is these physical and morphological properties.
While particles in paste PVC resins are often sub-micrometer or a few micrometers, the characteristic particle diameters of extender resins are often tens of micrometers, depending on the product class. Extender types with a median size of approximately 20–60 μm have been described in the literature. This range is not a mandatory specification for all commercial grades.
The function of Extender PVC is not to chemically replace PVC with another material, but to rearrange the PVC particle population within the same plastisol. In this way, the process viscosity can be reduced without changing the amount of plasticizer; however, the best ratio should also be evaluated through mechanical properties and gelation.

CHEMICAL STRUCTURE AND MOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF EXTENDER PVC

The PVC chain consists of repeat units –CH₂–CHCl– formed by the polymerization of vinyl chloride. The chlorine atom in the chain affects the polarity of the polymer and its different thermal/chemical behavior compared to other polyolefins.
The difference between extender resin and paste PVC is usually not the chemistry of the repeat unit. The main differences are the polymerization process, chain length distribution, particle formation, particle porosity, and surface morphology. Coarser and lower plasticizer absorption extender grains can reduce the rheological load due to the high surface area of the main paste resin.
The K-value is a metric associated with the viscosity of PVC in solution; it provides a comparative indication of its molecular weight. Two resins with the same K-value do not have to yield the same plastisol viscosity; particle properties are also decisive. For example, higher K-value blending grades are also available, such as Vestolite XG FIT E-52.
Extender PVC does not react directly with the plasticizer. In cold plastisol, the particles are dispersed in the liquid medium. During heating, the diffusion of the plasticizer into the PVC accelerates, the grains swell and coalesce, forming a continuous polymer-plasticizer phase. The adequacy of fusion affects the final tensile, elongation, tearing, and low-temperature performance.

For INOVYN PVC 266EF, the technical sheet reports an approximate K-value of 66, an average particle size of 40 μm, and a volatile content of ≤0.3%. For vinnolite C 65 V, there are typical values such as an approximate K-value of 65, an apparent bulk density of approximately 0.62 g/mL, and a volatile matter ≤0.3%. These are examples of two separate commercial products; they should not be generalized to all extender resins.
For Vestolite XG 217, an approximate K-value of 67; For Vestolite XC 866, an approximate K-value of 66 is given. These resins can have a different effect on air output, high shear viscosity, and surface gloss even at similar K-values.

HOW DOES EXTENDER PVC WORK AT THE MOLECULAR AND PARTICLE LEVEL?

PVC plastisol is the dense dispersion formed by microscopic PVC particles and plasticizer. The total surface area of the many small particles in the paste resin is high; this affects the flow of the liquid phase. Coarser extender particles with controlled size distribution show different packing and plasticizer absorption behavior compared to the parent resin.
When a section of the master paste PVC is replaced with extender resin, the total amount of PVC can be left the same. This type of substitution can change the Brookfield low-shear viscosity or high-shear rheology of plastisol. The technical designation of vinnolite C 65 V speaks of reducing viscosity and dilatant and improving shelf stability.
Dilatans describes the tendency for flow resistance to increase when the applied shear rate or shear stress increases. Failure to achieve the expected flow during knife coating, spraying or dipping can become a process problem. Extender resin can help reduce this behavior, but the result can also be reversed depending on the plasticizer, filler and main PVC grade used.
It is not enough to just look at the viscosity. If the extender ratio is too high, it can impair fusion integrity, surface smoothness, optical properties, and mechanical properties. The comparison must be made in conjunction with the viscosity of the aged plastisol and the properties of the cured film.

IN WHICH SECTORS IS EXTENDER PVC USED?

Textile coating and fabric back coating

Faux leather and technical leather

PVC floor coverings and cushion vinyl

Vinyl wall coverings

Automotive underbody protection coatings

Automotive seam and body sealants

PVC plastisol adhesives and sealing systems

Parts produced by dipping process

Rotation and slush molding

Compact PVC coatings

Mechanical foamed PVC coatings

Chemical foamed PVC sheets

High-fill plastisol systems

Low-gloss targeted coatings

Manufacturers recommend certain extender grades for purposes such as low viscosity, low dilatancy, better air output, low gloss, filler acceptance, and process stability. Not all grades are equally suited to every application.

PLASTIC AND COATING APPLICATIONS OF EXTENDER PVC

In PVC plastisol technology, the main function of Extender PVC is not to replace the entire paste resin, but to replace an appropriate portion. This method allows the flow to be adjusted while keeping the total amount of PVC in the recipe constant. For example, scanning can be done by selecting 20–40 parts of extender and the rest of the paste PVC out of a total of 100 parts of PVC. The INOVYN PVC 266EF white paper gives examples of use up to phr 50 in certain plastisol formulations; this ratio is not a universal optimum.
Flow under the coating blade, penetration level of fabric, line marks, foam cell arrangement and surface gloss must be evaluated at the same time. The lower plasticizer absorption of the extender reduces the initial viscosity in some systems. However, the effects of plasticizer chemistry, filler amount and process temperature determine together.
Smooth surface, abrasion resistance, tear and flexibility are important in compact coatings. Cell size, cell uniformity, surface defects and density should be monitored separately in foamed coatings. Therefore, the same extender class can give different results in compact and foam systems.

USE OF EXTENDER PVC IN FILLED AND FOAMED SYSTEMS

Mineral fillers such as calcium carbonate play important roles in cost, stiffness, and flow. When the filler level rises, plastisol viscosity can increase; the mixture can become difficult to apply. Extender PVC sometimes helps achieve lower viscosity or increase filler at the same filler level.
The functions of extender PVC and calcium carbonate are different. Extender PVC participates in gelation and fusion as part of the polymer; while mineral filler essentially remains in the matrix as an inorganic particle. Therefore, there is no direct substitution for mineral filler solely because of the name "extender".
In foam formulations, the foaming system, gas formation temperature, PVC fusion rate, viscosity increase curve, and stabilizer package must be compatible. If one of these elements is not suitable, the closed cell structure may be disrupted. Using extender resin alone does not guarantee good foam quality.

IS EXTENDER PVC USED IN FOOD, COSMETICS AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS?

Extender PVC is not a food ingredient or cosmetic active ingredient. Some types of PVC and final packaging materials can be used in food contact applications; however, the general PVC ID does not automatically indicate that the product is suitable for food contact.
If food contact, toys, medical devices or pharmaceutical packaging applications are planned, the monomer residue, additives, impurities, migration behavior and relevant legislation documents of the special PVC grade to be purchased should be checked.
In particular, plasticizers, stabilizers, pigments and other additives in plastisol significantly affect the final contact suitability. For this reason, the entire formulation should not be considered suitable based solely on the CAS number of the PVC resin or the conformity information published by a manufacturer for another grade.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF EXTENDER PVC

Plastisol viscosity control

Adjustment of low and high shear rheology

Reduction of diatans

Improving coating process flow

Limiting plastisol storage viscosity increase

Reduction of coating surface defects

Supporting higher mineral filler utilization in certain systems

Balancing foam structure and coating quality

Cost-performance optimization

Preservation of flexibility and mechanical properties after fusion

These purposes refer to the potential uses of the product family. It should not be assumed that a grade improves all of these at the same time.

WHAT PROBLEMS CAN EXTENDER PVC HELP SOLVE?

Plastisol is very viscous: Flow screening can be done by replacing a section of the main paste PVC with suitable extender resin.

Coating becomes difficult at high shear: Dilatan or high shear viscosity can be assessed by changing the type and dose of the extender.

Plastisol becomes too thick in storage: Extender grade, plasticizer and stabilizer compatibility can be investigated for aging viscosity.

Coating surface striated: Rheology, air outlet, dispersion quality, and coating conditions should be tested together.

Increasing calcium carbonate disrupts flow: Suitable extender resin can support high fill acceptance; this requires controlled fill screening.

Foam cells are uneven: Extender ratio, gelation-fusion balance, foamer, and temperature profile should be examined together.

Mechanical strength decreased: Too high extender ratio, insufficient fusion or incompatibility with the main PVC grade should be checked.

Product too bright: Some extender grades can be used to lower the surface gloss.

Adding more extenders is not the only solution. Resin selection, plasticizer, filler, stabilizer and process conditions must be optimized together.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING EXTENDER PVC

The commercial grade name and manufacturer must be verified.
PVC homopolymer or copolymer ID should be checked.
The K-value and the measurement method should be compared.
Particle size distribution and porosity should be evaluated.
Compatibility with the main paste PVC should be measured.
Plasticizer absorption and plastisol viscosity should be compared.
The extender ratio should be indicated not only by the weight percentage, but also by its share in the total PVC.
Low and high shear viscosity should be followed.
Viscosity aging can be monitored at defined times such as 1, 24 and 72 hours.
Gelation and fusion conditions should be optimized.
Foam and compact products should be tested separately.
Ultimate tensile strength, elongation, tear, and cold cracking behavior should be evaluated.
Vinyl chloride monomer residue and occupational safety should be checked through the manufacturer's SDS.
Excessive thermal degradation should be avoided and process ventilation should be ensured.

INITIAL FORMULATION APPROACHES FOR EXTENDER PVC

The following examples are initial recipes prepared for laboratory-scale evaluation; a verified commercial product is not a one-to-one recommendation or certified process instruction from a specific manufacturer. All percentages are weights. The suitability of DINP and other additives for use should be evaluated separately according to the target country and final product legislation. In each example, the total PVC ratio and all other inputs of the compared recipes were kept constant to isolate the extender effect.

ALTERNATIVES AND COMPARISON OF EXTENDER PVC

When choosing an alternative to Extender PVC, it is not enough for a product to have the same PVC chemistry alone. Plasticization rate, K-value, particle morphology, plastisol rheology, fusion, and final mechanical properties should be evaluated together.

EXTENDER PVC AND PASTE PVC (EMULSION PVC)

Paste PVC is usually the main dispersion resin of plastisol. Extender PVC is the auxiliary PVC particle population mixed with a section of paste resin. Fine particle paste PVC provides high surface area and fusion behavior, while extender can reduce viscosity at the appropriate dose. One hundred percent one-to-one substitution of two products does not guarantee the same viscosity or mechanical properties.

EXTENDER PVC AND MICROSUSPENSION PVC

Microsuspension PVC is another group of fine particulate PVC that can be used as a plastisol main resin. Extender PVC can work with this resin; however, the particle size distribution and plasticizer absorption properties are different. The substitution decision should be based on coating rheology and fusion experiments.

EXTENDER PVC AND STANDARD SUSPENSION PVC

Standard S-PVC is most often designed for extrusion, injection or calendering. Not all standard S-PVC behaves as a stable and homogeneous extender in plastisol. Extender grades are specifically chosen for their properties such as controlled particle shape and low plasticizer absorption.

EXTENDER PVC AND CALCIUM CARBONATE

Calcium carbonate is a widely used inorganic filler in PVC formulations. Extender PVC is a polymer resin. Although both can affect recipe cost and flow, their effects on gelation behavior, mechanical performance and density are different. These are not chemically equivalent products.

EXTENDER PVC AND VINNOLITE C 65 V / VINNOLITE EXT

Vinnolite C 65 V and Vinnolite EXT are two commercial examples in the extender/blending resin group. C 65 V with approximately K 65 properties; EXT is defined by its controlled surface structure, narrow particle distribution and low plasticizer absorption. Resin selection should be made not only based on name, but also with current technical data and comparative plastisol tests.

EXTENDER PVC AND INOVYN PVC 266EF / VESTOLIT XC 866

INOVYN PVC 266EF is offered as a homopolymer blending resin with a particle size of approximately K 66 and an average particle size of 40 μm. Vestolit XC 866 is also a suspension PVC blending resin with a specification of approximately K 66 to reduce viscosity and dilatant. A similar nominal K-value does not mean that these two grades will provide the same rheological result.

STORAGE AND HANDLING OF EXTENDER PVC

Extender PVC should be stored in dry, clean, and packaging that complies with the manufacturer's recommendation. Contamination of the powder with moisture, dirt, and different resins should be avoided. Sealed bags should be protected from direct sun, heat sources, and excessive storage temperatures.
Agglomeration of powder, damage to packaging and mixing of different K-value grades should be avoided throughout storage. First-in, first-out (FIFO) and lot tracking should be implemented. Proper dust control is required in fine powder transfer.
Transport and classification should be determined by the physical form of the product, supplier SDS and additive content, if any. A single universal transport class should not be derived from the overall polymer identity.

EXTENDER PVC SAFETY INFORMATION

When working with Extender PVC powder, respirable dust generation and eye contact should be controlled. During the cutting, pouring, and mixing stages, ventilation, eye protection, and proper occupational hygiene should be applied according to the manufacturer's SDS.
PVC resins can degrade at high temperature, forming irritant and corrosive degradation products, including hydrogen chloride. Excessive heating, long hot stands, and inadequate use of stabilizers increase this risk. In plastisol processes, the risks of hot surface, splash, and thermal burn must be assessed separately.
Static electricity and combustible dust hazards of PVC powder should be examined according to the dust formation conditions of the product and process used. All safety decisions regarding residual vinyl chloride monomer content, exposure limits and final product use should be based on the supplier's current SDS/COA data.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING EXTENDER PVC?

First, it should be clearly stated in which production the resin will be used: coating, artificial leather, flooring, foam, mastic, or molding. Then, the type of master paste PVC, plasticizer system, filler level, process temperature, and target viscosity should be shared.
The desired K-value, average particle size, low plasticizer absorption, storage stability, and rheological expectations should be written into the technical specification. Especially for high fill systems, viscosity control and post-fusion mechanical performance should be desired together.
Price comparison should not be made only on the basis of kilogram price. The level of filler possible due to lower viscosity, processing speed, error rate and total formulation cost should also be taken into account. Similar nominal K-valued extender resins from different manufacturers should not be considered equivalent without technical testing.

EXTENDER PVC – TECHNICAL SUMMARY

Extender PVC is a special blending resin with polyvinyl chloride chemistry, which is generally used in PVC plastisols by mixing it with paste resin. Its main purpose is to improve plastisol rheology thanks to its favorable particle morphology and low plasticizer absorption behavior.
Typical PVC homopolymer is CAS No 9002-86-2. The PVC repeat unit is –CH₂–CHCl– and the polymer does not have a single fixed molecular weight. The K-value, particle size, porosity and bulk density of the extender grades are different from the commercial grade.
Examples include products such as INOVYN PVC 266EF, Vinnolite C 65 V, Vinnolite EXT and Vestolit XC 866. Manufacturer data shows that extender resins can help reduce viscosity and dilatant, improve storage stability and filler acceptance in certain systems. These are not automatic results in every formulation.
This document presents two case studies of four recipes each for plastisol viscosity screening and constant high fill level coating screening. Weight percentages of inputs are given in all eight recipes and totals are calculated as 100%. These are laboratory improvement recommendations; they are not manufacturer-approved commercial production instructions.
When choosing Extender PVC, compatibility with the main paste PVC, plasticizer type, viscosity, aging, gelation-fusion and cured product mechanical properties should be evaluated together. Companies planning to supply products from Ataman Kimya should confirm the K-value, resin grade, viscosity expectation and necessary technical documents suitable for their target applications before ordering.
