HEDP•Na4, the tetrasodium salt of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, also called tetrasodium etidronate (CAS No 3794-83-0, C2H4Na4O7P2), is an alkaline organophosphonate supplied as an approx. 30 % aqueous solution or as a white powder or granules, and used as a scale inhibitor, corrosion inhibitor and chelating agent in cooling water, low- and medium-pressure boilers, oilfield water, swimming pools and industrial cleaning.
Tetrasodium etidronate (HEDP•Na4) is preferred over the acid form HEDP when a phosphonate must be added to neutral or alkaline systems or formulations without lowering the pH, and when a solid, non-corrosive and easy-to-transport form is needed, while it keeps the excellent calcium carbonate inhibition and metal-ion complexing power of HEDP.
Tetrasodium HEDP (HEDP•Na4) works at very low dosages through the threshold effect: the phosphonate groups adsorb onto the growth sites of forming calcium carbonate crystals, delay nucleation and distort crystal growth, so that scale does not build up on heat-exchange surfaces, at the same time HEDP•Na4 complexes iron, copper, zinc, calcium and magnesium ions.

HEDP stands for 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (etidronic acid). "Na4", "4Na" and "tetrasodium" all mean that the four acidic hydrogens of the two phosphonic acid groups are replaced by sodium. HEDP•Na4, HEDP·Na4, HEDP Na4 and HEDP.4Na are therefore only different spellings of the same product, and Tetrasodium Etidronate is its INCI name. Dequest 2016 and Turpinal 4NL are examples of trade names for tetrasodium HEDP solutions.
The fully neutralised phosphonate (HEDP•Na4) must be distinguished from the acid HEDP (CAS 2809-21-4), which is strongly acidic, from HEDP•Na2 (disodium etidronate, CAS 7414-83-7) and from HEDP•K4 (tetrapotassium salt). CAS 29329-71-3 is used for sodium salts of HEDP with an unspecified degree of neutralisation (x-Na), while 3794-83-0 identifies the tetrasodium salt.
WHAT IS HEDP•NA4?
Tetrasodium etidronate (HEDP•Na4) is a bisphosphonate salt. The parent acid HEDP has a central carbon atom carrying a methyl group, a hydroxyl group and two phosphonic acid groups (-PO3H2). This P-C-P backbone is chemically very stable: unlike inorganic polyphosphates, the carbon–phosphorus bonds of HEDP•Na4 do not hydrolyse easily at high temperature or extreme pH, so the inhibitor does not revert to orthophosphate in hot water systems.
HEDP is produced industrially by reacting phosphorus trichloride (or phosphorous acid) with acetic acid and/or acetic anhydride, followed by hydrolysis. Tetrasodium HEDP (HEDP•Na4) is then obtained by neutralising HEDP with sodium hydroxide to the tetrasodium stage. The solution can be sold as such or dried to powder or granules.
The hydroxyl group on the central carbon of HEDP•Na4 gives additional coordination with metal ions, making the HEDP molecule a tridentate ligand for calcium and many transition metals.
In cooling and boiler water, hardness ions and bicarbonate turn into calcium carbonate scale as soon as the water is heated or concentrated. Tetrasodium etidronate (HEDP•Na4) is one of the classic answers to this problem. A few milligrams per litre are enough to keep calcium carbonate in solution far above its normal solubility limit, which means fewer deposits, better heat transfer and less cleaning downtime.
Tetrasodium HEDP (HEDP•Na4) combines scale inhibition with corrosion protection. In combination with zinc salts, molybdates or other inhibitors, it helps form protective films on steel and copper alloys and reduces general corrosion. Its strong complexing power for iron, copper and zinc keeps these ions in solution and reduces staining and deposit formation.
The fully neutralised phosphonate (HEDP•Na4) is the "neutralised" version of HEDP. The acid form is supplied as a 60 % solution with pH below 2, HEDP•Na4 is alkaline, with a pH of about 10–12 in solution. Water treatment companies use HEDP•Na4 when they want to formulate alkaline or neutral inhibitor blends, when they prefer a solid product for transport in cold regions (a solid does not freeze), or when they want to avoid handling corrosive acids.
Where HEDP•Na4 is used in water treatment: open recirculating cooling water systems and cooling towers, low- and medium-pressure boilers and steam generators, oilfield water injection and oil pipelines, industrial and municipal cleaning water, swimming pools and spas, heat exchangers in power, chemical, metallurgical and fertiliser plants.

HOW HEDP•NA4 STOPS SCALE AND CORROSION
Threshold inhibition: HEDP•Na4 is effective at sub-stoichiometric dosages. Instead of binding all calcium ions, the phosphonate adsorbs onto microcrystal nuclei of calcium carbonate and blocks the active growth sites. Nuclei stay tiny and redissolve, or grow into distorted, weak crystals that do not adhere well.
Crystal modification: the crystals that do form in the presence of HEDP•Na4 are irregular and soft, so they are easier to remove by flow and blowdown.
Chelation: at higher dosages, HEDP•Na4 forms stable complexes with calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc. This keeps metal ions in solution, prevents iron and copper stains and stabilises zinc in zinc-based corrosion programmes.
Corrosion inhibition: adsorbed films of HEDP•Na4 complexes on metal surfaces, especially together with zinc, reduce corrosion of carbon steel, HEDP is also used with copper corrosion inhibitors such as azoles.
The fully neutralised phosphonate (HEDP•Na4) is particularly strong against calcium carbonate scale. For calcium sulphate, barium/strontium sulphate and silica, other inhibitors or blends are often more efficient, and polymeric dispersants are added when suspended solids or calcium phosphate must be controlled.
HEDP•NA4 IN COOLING WATER, BOILERS, OILFIELD AND POOLS
COOLING TOWERS AND RECIRCULATING SYSTEMS
Tetrasodium etidronate (HEDP•Na4) is used in phosphonate-based scale and corrosion programmes, often combined with zinc, orthophosphate, polymeric dispersants and azoles. Typical continuous dosages are in the low mg/L range, depending on water hardness, alkalinity, cycles of concentration and temperature.
BOILERS
In low- and medium-pressure boilers, HEDP•Na4 helps prevent carbonate deposits in feedwater lines and on heat-transfer surfaces. Its alkaline nature suits boiler water chemistry.
OILFIELD
In water injection and oil pipelines, HEDP•Na4 prevents carbonate scale and helps limit corrosion. Stability at elevated temperatures is an advantage downhole.
SWIMMING POOLS AND SPAS
In pools, HEDP•Na4 is added at low mg/L levels to prevent calcium scale on surfaces, heaters and filters and to prevent iron and copper stains. Its relatively good stability in chlorinated water makes it suitable for this use.
INDUSTRIAL AND MUNICIPAL CLEANING WATER
HEDP•Na4 is added to wash and rinse water to prevent hardness deposits and spotting.
OTHER APPLICATIONS OF HEDP•NA4
Textile and dyeing: HEDP•Na4 is used as a peroxide stabiliser in bleaching, as a sequestrant for metal ions that disturb dyeing and as a dye-fixing auxiliary.
Detergents and cleaners: HEDP•Na4 works as a sequestrant, water softener and peroxide stabiliser in household detergents and I&I cleaners, and in metal and non-metal cleaning.
Electroplating: HEDP•Na4 is used as a complexing agent in cyanide-free plating baths.
Cosmetics and hair dyes: as Tetrasodium Etidronate, HEDP•Na4 is a chelating agent in soaps, shampoos and hair care products, and stabilises hydrogen peroxide in hair colour and bleaching products, which prevents oxygen release and bulging of packages.
Soaps: HEDP•Na4 sequesters trace metals that cause rancidity and discolouration.
WHICH PROBLEMS DOES HEDP•NA4 SOLVE?
Calcium carbonate scale on heat exchangers and boiler tubes → HEDP•Na4 inhibits scale at low dosage.
Corrosion of carbon steel in cooling water → HEDP•Na4, combined with zinc and other inhibitors, reduces corrosion.
Iron and copper staining in pools and process water → HEDP•Na4 complexes these metals.
Acidic HEDP is difficult to handle or would lower the pH of a blend → HEDP•Na4 is alkaline and non-corrosive to handle.
Liquid inhibitors freeze in winter transport → solid HEDP•Na4 avoids freezing problems.
Hydrogen peroxide decomposes in bleaching baths or hair colour → HEDP•Na4 stabilises peroxide by binding catalytic metal ions.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING HEDP•NA4
- Calcium tolerance: at high calcium concentrations and high pH, calcium phosphonate can precipitate, dose HEDP•Na4 correctly and use dispersant polymers if needed.
- Chlorine and oxidants: HEDP•Na4 is relatively stable to chlorine, but very high oxidant levels can degrade phosphonates over time, check the residual.
- Phosphorus discharge: HEDP•Na4 contains phosphorus, local discharge limits and detergent regulations that limit total phosphorus must be observed.
- Biodegradability: phosphonates are not readily biodegradable, although they adsorb strongly to sludge and sediments.
- Active basis: always compare dosages and prices on the basis of active HEDP or active HEDP•Na4, because liquid and solid products differ greatly in concentration.
- Hygroscopic solid: keep powder and granules dry to avoid caking.
- Cosmetic use: in the EU, etidronic acid and its salts are restricted in cosmetics (for example in hair care and soap products, with limits expressed as etidronic acid), check the current Cosmetics Regulation annex before use.
INITIAL FORMULATION APPROACHES WITH HEDP•NA4
The compositions below are illustrative starting mixtures (% w/w), not validated commercial recipes or confirmed treatment-dose recommendations. Each totals 100 %. Percentages refer to raw materials as supplied, confirm their active contents and compatibility, and optimise for the actual water and process conditions.
1. ALKALINE COOLING WATER INHIBITOR BLEND
Combine HEDP•Na4 solution with a polyacrylate or acrylic copolymer dispersant and a copper inhibitor (for example sodium tolyltriazole), adjust pH and dilute with water. Dose to the system so that the active HEDP concentration is in the low mg/L range, then monitor phosphonate residual, calcium, alkalinity and corrosion coupons and adjust.
Illustrative initial components (% w/w of the blend):
Water: 75 %
HEDP•Na4 solution (30 %): 14 %
Polyacrylate dispersant solution (40 %): 10 %
Sodium tolyltriazole solution (50 %): 1 %
Total: 100 %
Any pH adjuster replaces an equal mass of water. This blend contains 4.2 % HEDP•Na4, equivalent to approximately 2.94 % HEDP acid, calculate the system dose from the intended active residual and verify it by monitoring.
2. POOL SCALE AND STAIN PREVENTER
Dilute HEDP•Na4 solution in water to a ready-to-use product and dose it to the pool after balancing pH and alkalinity, targeting a low mg/L active level. Repeat dosing according to water replacement and hardness.
Illustrative initial components (% w/w of the product):
Water: 95 %
HEDP•Na4 solution (30 %): 5 %
Total: 100 %
This dilution contains 1.5 % HEDP•Na4, equivalent to approximately 1.05 % HEDP acid. The product composition does not itself define a pool dose, calculate that dose from pool volume and the intended active concentration and confirm performance.
3. PEROXIDE STABILISER FOR TEXTILE BLEACHING
Add HEDP•Na4 to the bleach bath together with sodium hydroxide, hydrogen peroxide and a wetting agent, typically at a fraction of a gram per litre, and adjust the dosage to the water hardness and metal content of the goods.
Illustrative initial bath components (% w/w):
Water: 95.87 %
Sodium hydroxide solution (50 %): 1 %
Hydrogen peroxide solution (35 %): 3 %
Wetting agent: 0.1 %
HEDP•Na4 solution (30 %): 0.03 %
Total: 100 %
The HEDP•Na4 solution level here is 0.3 g/kg of bath, conversion to g/L requires the actual bath density. This composition is not a mixing-order instruction.
These levels are starting points only, each HEDP•Na4 application must be tested under the actual water and process conditions.

HOW DOES HEDP•NA4 WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?
HEDP•Na4 is etidronic acid in which four acidic protons have been neutralised with sodium. The parent acid, 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid, places two phosphonic acid groups and one hydroxyl group on the same carbon atom. This arrangement creates a small, dense “claw” of oxygen donors. How strongly that claw grips a metal ion, a crystal face or a mineral surface depends on how many protons the molecule still carries, so the behaviour of the tetrasodium salt is best understood by starting with its charge.
Charge and speciation: Etidronic acid has five dissociable protons, four on the phosphonate groups and one that is released only under very alkaline conditions. In the tetrasodium salt, the molecule is supplied largely in a highly deprotonated, multiply negative form. In water, it re-equilibrates with the solution pH: in alkaline media it stays strongly charged and binds metals tightly, while in acidic media it picks up protons, its charge falls and its metal-binding strength decreases. This pH-dependent speciation is why the same phosphonate behaves somewhat differently in alkaline cleaners, near-neutral cooling water and acidic descalers.
Stoichiometric binding: When enough phosphonate is present, each molecule can bind a metal ion directly. Phosphonate and hydroxyl oxygens coordinate to the ion and form chelate rings, keeping calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, zinc or manganese in a soluble complex. In this mode, the amount of HEDP•Na4 needed rises in proportion to the amount of metal to be controlled.
Substoichiometric action: In scale control, much smaller amounts are effective. Rather than binding every calcium ion, the phosphonate attaches to the edges and kinks of growing crystal nuclei, where new ions would normally be added. Growth at these sites is blocked or slowed, the crystal shape becomes distorted, and the deposit that forms is soft, fine and easily carried away. This threshold mechanism is why phosphonates are used at low dosages in cooling water, reverse osmosis antiscalants and industrial water circuits.
Calcium tolerance: The strong affinity for calcium has a limit. At high calcium levels, high pH and high phosphonate dosage, calcium–phosphonate salts can themselves exceed their solubility and precipitate. When this happens, active inhibitor is lost and a new deposit can form. Practical water treatment programmes therefore balance phosphonate dosage against hardness, alkalinity and temperature, often combining it with polymeric dispersants.
Interaction with metal surfaces: On iron and steel, the phosphonate adsorbs to the oxidised surface and, together with calcium or zinc in the water, forms a thin protective deposit. This layer slows the electrochemical reactions that drive corrosion. The same surface affinity also lets it loosen and solubilise existing oxide and scale layers in cleaning formulations.
Controlled release from rock surfaces: In oilfield scale-squeeze treatments, phosphonates are pumped into the formation, where they adsorb onto rock surfaces or precipitate as sparingly soluble calcium salts. As produced water flows back, the phosphonate slowly desorbs or dissolves and is released at low concentrations, continuing to inhibit scale over an extended period. This behaviour relies on the same adsorption and calcium-binding chemistry described above.
Protecting oxidisers in bleaching: Peroxide-based bleaches decompose rapidly when free iron, copper or manganese ions are present, because these metals catalyse radical reactions. By locking up these ions, the tetrasodium phosphonate stabilises peroxide in textile, pulp and laundry bleaching, giving more controlled bleaching and less fibre damage.
Chemical robustness: The carbon–phosphorus bonds of the diphosphonate are not cleaved by hydrolysis under normal use conditions, unlike the phosphorus–oxygen–phosphorus bonds of polyphosphates. As a result, HEDP•Na4 does not revert to orthophosphate in hot or alkaline systems and retains its chelating and threshold activity over long residence times.
In detergents and personal care: In detergents, binding of hardness ions supports the cleaning action of surfactants and prevents insoluble salts from depositing on fabrics and surfaces. In soaps and cosmetics, sequestering trace metals helps prevent soap scum, discolouration and metal-catalysed oxidation of oils and fragrances.
Results depend on pH, calcium and magnesium levels, metal ion content, temperature, the presence of oxidisers and other formulation components. HEDP•Na4 dosage and process conditions should therefore be confirmed through laboratory trials.
