OCCURRENCE AND REPRESENTATION of N-(3-AMINOPROPYL)-N-DODECYLPROPANE-1,3-DIAMINE:
The industrial production of N-(3-Aminopropyl)-n-dodecylpropane-1,3-diamine starts from the saturated linear C 12 fatty acid lauric acid [C 11 H 23 -COOH], which is reacted with ammonia (NH 3 ) to form lauric acid amide [C 11 H 23 -CONH 2 ] and then dehydrated to lauric acid nitrile (dodecanonitrile, C 11 H 23 -CN).

Recently, lauric acid-rich vegetable oils , such as coconut oil (a triglyceride mixture with approximately 50% lauric acid content), have been converted in the vapor phase with ammonia over transition metal catalysts such as vanadium(V) oxide V 2 O 5 or zeolites , such as HZSM-5 (cat. 1), directly at 400 °C into a laurin nitrile-rich fatty acid nitrile mixture (and glycerol ), from which the dodecanenitrile can be distilled.

The laurin nitrile is hydrogenated to laurylamine over a Raney nickel catalyst (cat. 2) in the presence of ammonia to suppress the formation of secondary amines.
Dodecylamine undergoes a Michael addition reaction at 110 °C with excess acrylonitrile.

This produces N , N -di(cyanoethyl)dodecylamine, which is hydrogenated in the next step with Raney cobalt at 140 °C in the presence of ammonia to give N- (3-aminopropyl) -N- dodecylpropane-1,3-diamine in 88% yield.
Using Raney nickel as a catalyst, laurylamine dipropylenediamine is obtained practically quantitatively even at low hydrogen pressures of approximately 3.5 bar.
